Small Gods (2007)
Surreal trip through an unrecognizable country
So very late to the party (this movie!) but I loved it. Small Gods feels like a surreal journey through a country I (as someone born and brought up in Belgium) can barely recognize with people I might('ve) known, one day. The cinematography manages to make Belgium both unrecognizably dreary and unrecognizably beautiful, in some way. Now the story is... strange, very slow burn, slow burn as in I didn't understand anything for the first twenty minutes of the movie and considered turning it off. Bits and pieces of the plot are revealed at a snail's pace almost, but finishing is most definitely worth it. Would recommend.
Av: The Hunt (2020)
Imperfect but not bad
Not perfect by any means, but I enjoyed it. The camerawork had its moments, the acting was good. It's a movie that really gets you on the edge of your seat and makes you empathize with and root for (some of) the characters. I will say that the ending was a bit of a bummer - as someone else has said, left an open wound. Still, I would recommend this one.
Prey (2021)
Best avoided.
Prey is a movie that provides you with a great many questions from its very beginning to its final moments. The premise had potential, giving credit where it's due, but the execution was lacklustre. None of the characters I felt for, or identified with, and the antagonist's motivation seemed, to me, illogical.
I'm sorry, I really didn't like this one.
Algoissjiman (2021)
Eh.
Began watching specifically for Yoon Sol and Jiwan, who are not given the amount of time and in-depth story they deserve. The rest of the show, in my opinion, is bland. The acting is not terrible - again, bland - but the pacing of the plot most definitely is.
The Good Fight (2017)
I don't like leaving bad reviews, but I have to this time around.
If you need edgy "jokes" about sensitive subjects to stir controversy and keep your amount of viewers up, you are undeserving of anything but the very lowest rating I can give.
(This has happened one, two, three... times too much!)
Oculus (2013)
Melancholy horror, VERY terrifying.
Watched this film as a child behind my parents' backs, thought it was terrible at the time (too scary for me, did not sleep very well for quite some time lol); this remains the same now that I've re-watched it so many years later. I personally really enjoy the films that bring themes of childhood trauma, grief, and things like that in the horror genre, actually creating a good story rather than just resorting to jumpscares or unexplained (gratuitous) violence. A haunting movie with great acting, intelligent characters and a more than decent plot.
Unfriended: Dark Web (2018)
Not terrible, not great.
I watched this film mainly because of the enormously fascinating - and equally terrifying, or so I think - subject it deals with: the part of the internet that we are taught and told to avoid. Even though it paints an incorrect picture of what the dark web really is, and emphasizes myths for the sake of entertainment, I find this film thrilling and certainly not bad. I'd recommend watching, and I'll definitely watch this one again soon.
The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018)
A generally forgettable film with some unforgettable moments.
The Strangers: Prey At Night is the follow-up to the first, and in my opinion slightly better, The Strangers film released in 2008. In hindsight it captures a string of regrettable decisions (as well as a handful of plot points mentioned early on but never again). It's not a bad movie, per se. I'd say it's one of those movies to watch when you're bored and have nothing better to do. A 5 out of 10 specifically for two scenes that, in my opinion, make this movie, and for the unexpectedly rather enjoyable soundtrack.
Tusk (2014)
Question marks.
The entire movie I sat there like ????? What is going on. What am I watching. I have to admit though, the movie was entertaining, and the cast did a great job making me feel for their respective characters. The ending, again... question marks. All in all not a bad way to waste some time.
Underwater (2020)
Boring :(
Since I started playing Subnautica I have been somewhat obsessed with all films and games set underwater. This was a big, fat disappointment, unfortunately. Foolish characters, underwhelming conclusion. At certain moments it was just dull. A pity, because the premise was promising.
Channel Zero (2016)
Loved Season Four.
As a fan of r/NoSleep and (some) Creepypasta tales I thought I had to watch this series. I am glad I did. Season four (The Dream Door) in particular has stayed with me. Lovable characters you feel for and a satisfying ending. Candle Cove traumatized me, but was very good, as well. Will not watch again, though, out of absolute terror.
As Above, So Below (2014)
One of my favorite horror movies.
Though I have to admit I'm not perpetually a fan of found-footage horror, this one did it for me. It was original, the cast was wonderful. Initially I gave this film an 8 out of 10. Then I read an analysis of the film, watched it again, and only then could I really appreciate As Above, So Below in its entirety. With inspiration drawn from Dante's Comedy (in such a way that the main characters seem to have ended up in the inferno that Alighieri describes; think of the scene in which Papillon protrudes only with his legs out of the sand, something that down to the letter occurs in Dante's Comedy) I find As Above, So Below something entirely different, and that alone is an accomplishment in the horror genre since these days most horror flicks are similar to each other, the characters are flat and the tropes are repetitive. 10/10 for a film I often think about.
The Ritual (2017)
Not great--good.
As the title of this review says: good if you need to pass by some time you have to spare. Interesting premise, OK execution. Some shots were really, really nice (such as the ones wherein the grocery store seems to become one with the woods: two places of torture for the main character). Unlike most I DID find the ending quite nice. I liked the whole "submission/cowardice" thing that drove the protagonist to act the way he did and eventually survive. That's some character development if you ask me. On the other hand I do have to agree with what is often said, though: the big monster reveal took away most of the tension/suspense and would probably have been scarier if it remained unseen (as there is nothing we fear more than the unknown).
In short: not bad. Good. Just not insanely good.
Frankenweenie (2012)
Solid 8 (including extra point for how cute Frankenweenie is).
First and foremost: I would die for Frankenweenie.
Anyway, I like very nearly everything Burton puts out (although IMO he's said and done some questionable things). This was no exception. Cried. Laughed. Frowned. I'll always love the artstyle of Burton's movies: dark, gritty, kinda stupid. Would recommend if you, too, cry when animals are done harm or die in movies but enjoy torturing yourself.
Pauline & Paulette (2001)
Watched this with my grandma, both cried.
Pauline & Paulette is a movie starring two incredible actresses. It is charming, saddening, and funny at certain moments. I also like the way the color red seems to be present (at times subtly, at times not very much so) in most of the frames. 10 out of 10: the director made a masterpiece of which he can undeniably be proud.
Ah-ga-ssi (2016)
Dark and vulnerable, but magical at once. I, too, am in love with The Handmaiden.
The Handmaiden is a movie I passed by multiple times without paying it any mind but eventually, in 2018, I watched, and it is safe to say that I was not disappointed (only disappointed in myself for not giving it a chance before).
At its core, a movie not entirely about revenge but about catharsis, with great attention to both detail and symbolism, The Handmaiden, to me, is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever watched. Park Chan Wook hardly disappoints, but this underrated gem is a piece of art. The chemistry and dedication between the two main characters, Hideko and Sook-hee, is incredible."My savior, who came to ruin my life" is something I will never forget. That damn library scene!!
