Dave Chappelle: The Closer (2021)
It takes an enormous amount of intellect and audacity push the boundaries of comedy.
Dave is not at all unfamiliar with including sensitive material in his act. He has mastered the art of thought provoking humor, and his comedy has so many layers, I can definitely see how many persons could be offended if they take his material at face value.
As he exercises his freedom of speech.... it is evident now more than ever that we are becoming increasingly restricted to speak freely on certain subject matters that may be plaguing the underbelly of society. These issues disguise behind race, gender, social status etc..... when the truth is they are all rooted within the interplay of two main concepts: Equality vs Justice.
Kingdom (2019)
Solid zombie-themed series.
The only thing better than a good zombie movie, is a good zombie series.
I could admit that a few questionable decisions were made to move along the story-line, and a few actions/occurrences were quite predictable (much like Western cinema), but if those things are ignored then you have hours of entertainment that you most certainly will not regret.
As a side note, I feel like the writers in most zombie films create problems for themselves the minute they start trying to use science or related logic to try to explain what created the undead..... and Kingdom was no exception. I feel it would have been better to leave that part as a mystery.
Still, Kingdom is a must watch.... and if you are like me, that means binge watch. I gave it an 8/10 because I just like zombie shows so I am biased.
Busanhaeng (2016)
This film LITERALLY raised the bar for zombie movies.
If you have not watched Train to Busan..... go and watch Train to Busan.
This is everything a zombie movie should be..... 99% of the time you are sitting at the edge of your seat. Yes, I can admit that there were a few wonky decisions made by some of the side characters at times, but for the most part, the acting in this film was stellar (not just for the main cast, but for the zombie actors too, they were terrific).
I think people these days have grown to anticipate a protagonist that is selfless and immediately likeable, but South Korean cinema often transforms their lead characters through experiences, or sometimes would just outright highlight the 'dual' aspect to human nature, which is to make 'good' or 'bad' decisions depending on the circumstances.
I gave it a 9/10 because it is in my all-time top 5 zombie films list, and because it can be re-watched many times and still be entertaining.
Seuwiteuhom (2020)
You need to commit at least 35 mins before giving up.
This is one of those films that takes awhile to warm up.... but when it does, it's actually thoroughly entertaining.
There were a few plot holes here and there, but it is easy to forgive those when compared to how RIVETING it was to experience such a bizarre post-apocalyptic world. Most of the time I was completely engrossed in the storytelling..... and though the ending threw me off a little.... I definitely do not regret watching it. I gave it 8/10 because it is one of the better horror/fantasy films that I have seen in awhile.
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
Prepare to like an unlikable character.
Some of the best cinema I have ever seen originates from South Korea. They are masters at layering dubious qualities on their protagonists, which often makes the lead characters quite unpredictable, yet still very relatable.
For too long Western cinema has followed the narrative that the 'good guy' has to be a 'nice guy'.... when in fact, the majority of us look out for our own self interests when push comes to shove.
I feel like the writers left a few plot holes here and there.... but overall Squid Game was very entertaining. I gave it a 9/10 despite its shortcomings.
Final Space (2018)
This show is literally one of the best I've seen in years.
I'm a big Rick & Morty fan, and started watching this show at a time when it felt like I watched everything good the genre can offer.... so my expectations weren't very high. Skip to 3 seasons later and this is in my top 5 all-time favorite shows. My first impression was that it was just an awkwardly hilarious type like Futurama, but it evolved to have such a powerful and well thought-out story development. Unlike many other shows, Final Space assumes the audience is intelligent, and it pulls so many different emotions out of you as you uncover the complex layers behind some of the main characters.
I gave this show 10/10 because it isn't possible to give it 11/10.
Kimbiseoga wae geureolkka (2018)
A delightful romance that doesn't take itself too seriously.
This series is charming, playful, funny and has a strong male and female lead. I caught myself giggling throughout, and there were little moments that really warmed my heart too. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoyed series like "It's Ok To Not Be Ok" and "Crash Landing Onto You".
HIStory (2017)
Loved History 4: Close to You
Close to You (History 4) was by far my favorite HIStory season and is definitely in my top 15 BL list.
It took me a while to warm up to Xiao Li Cheng, at first I found him to be irritating, but by episode 8 I couldn't deny that he was by far my favorite character. I found the interaction between him and Teng Mu Ren to be tremendously more interesting than the interaction between Ye Xing Si and Fu Yong Jie. In fact, I found Fu Yong Jie to be a rather distasteful character and couldn't quite stomach his scenes.
Regardless, I binged watched the season for two nights in a row and the amount of laughter I had to stifle in so as to not disturb anyone had me sounding like a wounded animal. Would definitely recommend.
Shan he ling (2021)
Must Not Be Missed!!!
This is one of the best shows I have ever watched. It's right up there with 'The Untamed' and 'Nirvana in Fire'. What gets me every time is that these shows start off so questionable, and I struggle to make it through the first two or three episodes.... then by episode four I am up to all hours of the night binge watching because it's so, so good. I fell in love with Wen Ke Xing's character very early on in the show.... but it wasn't too long before my heart was melting for Zhou Zi Shu, Gu Xiang, Cao Wei Ning and the other main cast. Wuxia Dramas are literally my favorite genre of cinema now. Totally hooked!!!
Qing Ya Ji (2020)
Mediocre at best.
I feel like 6/10 may even be too generous. Still, it is visually pleasing.... but it was hard for me to look past the largely incoherent storyline. Such a shame because it had so much potential. To enjoy this movie you have to lower your expectations in advance.... and try not to think too much about the insane amount of plot holes.
Advance Bravely (2017)
So funny!... and so worth it!
This series is now one of my favorite BL dramas. Typically, Chinese BL's are very understated, and they tend to come over as less BL and more bromance. However, this series has the most palpable attraction I have seen in awhile.... and every episode has me cracking up! Not to mention, Simon Gong and Jason Xu really give justice to their roles and on top of that, they are GORGEOUS!!!!
I'm simply OBSESSED with this show!
Mr. Heart (2020)
I didn't hate it.
It was ok. The acting came across as contrived and not that believable at some points, and despite it being a mini-series I still found myself skipping ahead at some points as well. Despite that, it was still decent enough for me to want to finish it rather than just give up completely.
Would I recommend it to a friend? Maybe. Am I looking forward to a second season? No.
To My Star (2021)
It's actually pretty decent
This is a pretty hilarious and heartwarming mini-series. The bromance is strong, the cast is gorgeous and there were plenty of cheeky moments where I couldn't help but blush and squeal in absolute delight!
Despite it being relatively short (the entire series is a little over 2hrs long), I thought there was adequate character development and the plot/storyline did not suffer in the least. In fact, some of the other BL dramas out there tend to drag on a show for 24 episodes by adding a lot of meaningless lines and scenes, when they could just do 12 episodes of good solid content instead.
This is why I love BL dramas like 'To My Star'. I hope they give us a second season soon!
We Best Love: No.1 for You (2021)
It warms my heart, truly!
This series is so darn adorable! I'm a fan of a good bromance/BL but I find that 80% of them tend to be cheesy and can feel a bit forced, but this little gem had good dialogue, the storyline was believable, and the cast members were very attractive too!! I found myself giggling like a silly school girl most of the time! I really liked it.
Ashura (2012)
This, my friend, is a good movie.
Easily one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen.
