Yôjinbô (1961)
An average film with above average story
An enjoyable film with fluent story, but still has all the features of old Japanese cinematography: Long scenes with lots of glancing, all characters behave pure emotionally except main character, etc.
The storytelling of this film is a little bit complicated. There are lots of names and characters. It would be better if the side characters had more descriptive scenes instead of glancing scenes. I would never have guessed that I would say this about an old Japanese film, but I think it would be better if this film was a little bit longer.
Normally this film deserves an 8 rating, the story is interesting and the film is not boring. But I did not know that this film was inspired by a book. Because of this, I rate it 7.
Who Am I - Kein System ist sicher (2014)
A gripping story with realistic hacking, but unrealistic characters
The story is very exciting and gripping. The depiction of hacking is realistic compared to usual Hollywood hacking. But side characters are very generic and I think they do not match the hacking concept. Because of that, I really liked the first plot twist, it was unexpected for me and I think the first plot twist really tied the story together. It was a great explanation especially for weak side characters and some very random encounters throughout the film.
Second plot twist was little bit forced and unnecessary.
The film is enjoyable. My vote was 8, but because of the second plot twist, I rated it 7.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Very very very Random, Weird, Funny and Wholesome Film
The first part of the film is fast paced, very random and weird. But in the second part, events took an unexpected turn. The film suddenly makes you question your purpose on life. You realize that the universe is immensely vast and nothing matters. Then the film strikes the final blow and your heart is filled with emotions.
Easily one of the best films I have ever watched. The creators were very successful in reflecting the soul of 2020s. This film is like a full feature film version of the popular videos titled "Never let them know your next move".
Quirkiness of this film may not be for everyone, but I think everyone must watch this film. 10/10.
Agora (2009)
Impressive Film but not Perfect
This film triggers too much emotions, especially for the people who are interested in history. In that regard, the film successfully impresses the watchers.
The subject covered in the film is very intriguing. Although the film is not completely accurate historically, it was a great experience to observe the atmosphere in those times. I am very happy that I watched this film and learned something inspiring.
Lastly, the second half of the film proceeds slower than the first half. Technically, it would have been better.
Planet Earth (2006)
Creativity of nature, presented with unreal footage
This series has a really overwhelming atmosphere, which makes you feel amazed by the craziness of nature. They really did a good job by making the audience observe the nature without any hint of human beings.
Every episode narrates the adventures of different creatures. "Caves" episode is really scary, especially the cockroaches that eat meat are nightmare fuel. "Ocean Deep" episode makes you feel like you are watching Pokemon, there are some animals in the deep ocean that exceed human imagination.
The biggest appreciation should be given to wildlife camerapeople. Some of the footage included in the series is really out of this world. I would never have imagined that I would be able see some of these things. Even after seeing some of these footage, it still feels like it is impossible to record such amazing footage. There is too much effort, too much time spent.
After watching this series, you realize that Earth is really huge and we know very little about it. It really feels like watching an uninhabited alien world.
I don't know if this series could be better in any way, but it is a fact that they created a magnificent series from the planet we all live in.
Ran (1985)
Slow-paced epic film with huge production
The film is very slow-paced. In some scenes you can even think that people move in slow-motion, but I think that is the characteristic of Japanese films. It is very hard to maintain concentration for more than 2 and half hours for a slow-paced film, because of that I think it is better to watch this film when you are in a relaxed situation and have lots of time.
There are some magnificent shots in the film. Also the production is great, I really appreciate the effort.
Lastly, I cannot understand some very apparent mistakes made regarding the clothing. For example, there is no way there was a multi-colored dragonfly patterned clothing in the Medieval times.
Trance (2013)
A fluent film with below average story
Although it is obvious that the writers tried to create a mind-blowing story, I think it is easy to follow and predict the story. If you ignore the weak story and focus on the action and characters, it is easier to watch.
If you want to spend time and not get bored, you can watch this movie. Hence, I rate it 7.
Some Like It Hot (1959)
A cult film with great writing and acting
The scenario is especially well written, as expected from Billy Wilder. Crime, action, love interest and comedy themes are masterfully blended in the story. On top of that, the acting is magnificent. I think the film has no negative sides, it is a masterpiece. I rate it 9 because it is inspired by another film.
Community (2009)
Funniest American made thing I've ever watched
This series (except season 6) is the funniest American made thing I've ever watched. The writers did really good job by creating high level comedy through stereotypical characters and community college setup. The parodies are really funny, but after first few seasons you start to feel that it is getting repetitive.
I was gonna rate it 10, but because of unnecessary season 6, I rate it 9.
Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004)
Best side: Great characters, Weak side: too many dialogues
Compared to volume 1, there is almost no action in this film. If they had kept some action for volume 2, it would be much better. As a result, lack of action led to long dialogues, which makes the film less interesting. After that build-up, I expected more exciting ending with Bill.
Lastly, the characters and music are great, just like the first volume.
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
Stereotypical main story mixed with unique art-style and interesting characters
Although the main story is really stereotypical, the characters are original. The art-style is very distinguished, including wonderful music and cool costumes. There is 8 minutes of narrative in the style of anime, which I think is very unique. It is really nice to see some diversity in the film.
One of the negative sides of this film is the unnecessary amount of blood (and feet maybe, lol). Also, some scenes (especially during action sequence) really made me feel like they are from a parody sketch.
As someone whose top priority in films is story, it is impossible not to appreciate the great and unique art-style of this film.
Judgment at Nuremberg (1961)
Successfully depicts aftermath of WW2, and great acting
The film is very old and the story takes place in older times. The film being old makes it more important, because it reflects the perspective from 60s, looking only 15 years back. Also it is pleasant that the general perspective regarding the Nazis stayed same in the last 60 years.
Film sheds light to the atmosphere in Germany after war, occupied by Allies forces. I think feeling that atmosphere makes it easier to understand German people's view on WW2. In that sense, the film is a cultural experience.
Lastly, the acting was great throughout the film. I really hated that Nazi lawyer, very good acting.
Chinatown (1974)
Interesting scenario, great acting, a bit hard to understand the storyline
I liked the idea of using California water wars as the main theme in a mystery-crime film. Although the story is a little bit complicated and it is hard to follow the connections between revelations, the main idea sticks out.
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)
Original and hilarious film
Original story, it keeps on giving until the end. There are lots of characters, all of them are interesting. The film does not feel like it was intended to be funny, but still it is really hilarious. The funny aspect of the film may be because of the British style. I recommend everyone to watch this film.
El secreto de sus ojos (2009)
An average movie that could have been better
First half of the film is really great. Story build-up is nicely done, characters are smoothly integrated into the story. But second part is really sloppy and slow-paced. The story could be tied up with much higher tension.
Inside Bill's Brain: Decoding Bill Gates (2019)
Perfect summary of Bill's Brain
This series did a great job explaining how Bill Gates' brain works, in just under 3 hours. It inspires you and also answers some important questions about Bill Gates. Only negative side of this series is the random transitions between subjects.
Unforgiven (1992)
Mild taste of good old Western Cinema
The movie succeeds to catch a glimpse of Western atmosphere, but on the other hand, it does not completely feel like Western. Maybe it is because of costumes, maybe lack of dirt everywhere, maybe not having a good Western music, I don't know.
Although the story is very straightforward, it fits well inside the Western setup.
The IT Crowd (2006)
Moderately funny series
Some episodes are really funny and geniusly written. It is worth watching this series, but some scenes are not really funny and forced laughter effect does not help at all.
Tonari no Totoro (1988)
A film with beautiful animations for kids
Atmosphere is very peaceful, you can feel relaxed for 1 hour, until you realize that their mother may be dead. After this emotional tension, you can find ultimate peace at the end of the movie.
But I have an idea to make the ending of the movie very dark. The kids see that their parents are safe, then the kids get on the catbus and return home happily. Meanwhile, the illusion created by the forest spirits dissolves and we see that their mother is actually dead.
Dogville (2003)
A devastating but powerful movie
You should prepare yourself mentally before watching this movie. If you watch this movie with an easy mind (just as I did), you would have a bad time. I paused the movie 3 times because I could not handle some scenes, I had to process the events in my mind.
The setting is unusual and moral values are questioned. This movie is great if you want to put your moral values to the test.
Ikiru (1952)
Wholesome movie
The subject is very cliche by today's standards, but I believe it was not very common in 50s, especially in Japan.
The movie is very touching and moving, makes you appreciate your life. It reminded me of a quote from Mewtwo:
"I see now that the circumstances of one's birth are irrelevant. It is what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are."
Note: I think the last 30 minutes was unnecessary.
Heat (1995)
An average movie with great actors
Excellent actors/actresses,
Nice characters,
Weak story,
Awful storytelling.
An average movie that offers nothing different, but actors/actresses are great and it is not boring to watch it.
Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010)
Downvote
Not so funny, not so original.
Lauged in a few scenes.
