Papicha (2019)
Powerful through and through
The first time I've heard about this movie, and the fact it was Algeria's submission to the Oscars, it caught my attention; the plot reminded me a bit of another amazing algerian movie (I still hide to smoke) and so we went.
And, ladies and gentlemen, what a movie! There is a fine balance between fun/light scenes with others which clearly showcase the political chaos of the time, but even the fun scenes carry at least a bit of anticipation in the back, something could go wrong at any moment, and this is not something this film let the viewer forget (at least, not me).
Despair, in fact, was a feeling I felt a lot of time during the movie. But even more than that clear and raw despair/terror, this film really excels in providing an atmosphere of apparent powerlessness; "everything is changing around me, what I can do?".
Not only the characters were all very realistic, but Papicha herself was the perfect protagonist to this story, and the acting here is superb.
All and all, one of my favorites movies of 2019.
Charmed (2018)
The hate is uncalled for
I was a huge fan of the original show, and, unlike most fans, I was really excited for the reboot. I do see where most critics to this production come from; it sucks that women-centric actions shows never allow them to be old, and a new show with the same cast (even if the actresses accepted) would not be greenlit because women in these show "need" to be young; how they detached completely from the original is also unsettling.
With that being said, I don't think it ruins the original show's legacy, and it is a quite fun tv series to watch. Of course, it is not critically praiseworthy, but the same thing goes to the original, they both are fun shows with some good social messages; the diferences are that now you can insert racial/gender/sexuality way easier than in the original run, and they are seizing this; in fact, even for its time, the original charmed felt tame and date, it did nodded to racial diversity and women's right and equality, but it was shallow in it and they could've done so much more, buffy, for example, was way ahead already.
Anyway, this review was not supposed to be simply a comparison between shows: I do like the new charmed, it does have good enough acting, special effects and storylines, and it is great that it "fixes" some of the problems of the original, i do hope young girls get their hands in it, they can learn a lot about empowering themselves (the same for boys, btw); but, even if it is not your concern, it will still be a good comfort show
