High & Low: The Worst X (2022)
Why is the overall rating so low
I personally think this is a good movie. As in, it's a typical Japanese movie with emphasis and exaggeration on the gestures, facial expressions, the eyes and the hair and the eyebrows - which at times may be dramatic and funny or silly but it's okay I get it. The plot is also predictable but again I think it's a typical Japanese way of presentation on optimism and positivity and the never-give-up spirit. At least the fights are very well presented and nicely shot. I'm not sure why the overall rating is this low, this movie definitely deserves more appreciation and positive reviews. I enjoyed the two-hour movie and didn't think a minute was wasted. Very entertaining overall.
Life (2017)
Predictable
The movie is predictable overall, with casualties that could be avoidable and prevented. Plot development is typical which began with the disabled biologist (not sure if i got the occupation correct) over developing the creature. The precautionary / safety measures seemed very weak; there's basically no protocol to stop growing it. No protocol on how to destroy the creature whatsoever. Oxygen could have been cut and stopped from the lab right at the beginning; the atmosphere could be switched back to where it couldn't grow or had no reaction. Firewalls seemed weak with only three layers. It seemed that the crew allowed and encouraged the disasters to happen.
The Red Sea Diving Resort (2019)
Very familiar.
The movie feels very familiar to me and then I recall I watched Argo. The part where the "help" recite their names and backgrounds and languages and identities to Chris Evan is the same as what Ben affleck did in Argo with the film production crew? The fact that they needed to sell the mission-impossible idea to get the fund and green light were also very familiar. I feel like Argo had better tension and the Red Sea is more like a replica. Also the Red Sea is a bit slow.
Not sure what else i should comment on. Maybe the fact that the movie is slow but it's fast at the beginning how Chris Evans recruited all the crews out of nowhere and were ready to go? That part wasn't thoroughly depicted.
The Gray Man (2022)
It's alright
The tension is there. I was actually quite surprised and impressed with the maze in the end cause it's so typical but you wouldn't expect a maze to appear! Reminds me of the Shining too to be honest. I think it's a bit unnecessary to have the movie set in so many countries and a bit too cliche to have the founding members (fitz and godmother) of the gray man die but it didn't bother me too much.
I never really particularly liked or know much about Ryan gosling but this movie made him very lovable. I wouldn't mind more movies like this - it's a good weekend relaxing movie. It deserves a score of 7 at least I think.
Death on the Nile (2022)
Really poor and forceful acting
The plot is acceptable though somewhat predictable. But the actings are soo bad that ruined the movie and failed to engage the audience. Many acts felt very forceful and the lines are recited plainly like reading straight out from the book/script. The murder on the orient express was definitely much better with the big cast. T.
The Adjustment Bureau (2011)
The ending was a let down.
The majority of the film was great. There was the suspense, the mystery, the confusion that kept you intrigued and hoping to find out more. Then all of a sudden the ending came with a rush in Harry passing the hat to David, David getting the hang of all the "substrate" levels and the doors, David managed to reach Elise in the bathroom, Elise trusting David to run around and then all of a sudden they have touched the "chairman", the God in rewriting their paths. Everything was abrupt and in a rush in the end, which certainly is a pity, a waste and a let down of all the build-ups. I wish the movie could end in a way that things are slowly revealed just like the rest of the movie. Pity really.
World War II in Colour (2009)
Deserves higher rating than the Vietnam War for sure right?
I don't understand why it has a lower rating than the Vietnam War. I just watched episode 1 of the Vietnam - it was SO jumpy with very unnecessary and too-loud sound effects.
World War II in Colour is very informative, very straight-forward, easy to follow, good pace, with all the necessary and key information. It does not drag; there are always some surprises for you or you learn something new even though you think you may have heard or seen enough of the WWII. Thank you for this great documentary. I would definitely recommend it to others and in fact there were at least 3 friends who have watched it and recommended it to me to make me start watching it!!
Thank you!
The Vietnam War: Déjà Vu (1858-1961) (2017)
Too jumpy with unnecessarily LOUD transitions
For a beginner in history like me, I was hoping to have a more straight-forward and simple explanation of what had happened.
I do not see the need in jumping back and forth from the 1940s and the 1960s with the very unnecessary way-too-loud transition noise EVERY SINGLE TIME. We are not watching a horror movie here.
I prefer the cinematography and style of the World War II in colours much more.
Anyhow it is very informative.
To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You (2020)
I stopped before half way
Yes. I stopped before half way. That's how bad it is. No chemistry between the protagonists anymore, the love and smiles are so forceful. The Valentine's Day part was so hard to watch when Noah/Peter took out the note to read to Lara Jean. It's so embarrassing I decided to stop watching completely. I wonder if they felt the same while shooting the movie to be honest, the chemistry has completely gone.
Little sister Kitty is saying too much trying too hard (not her fault) it's the plot.
Anyway. Good luck watching it.
1917 (2019)
I don't get it.
Imagine the movie without the single-shot technique, it would be a very very weak movie. The plot is weak, the characters are weak.
Is it trying to say schofield was more strategic and experienced and calm? He also had a family but he is very focused and tough? Blake was inexperienced and naive? Both had very kind hearts that's why they were stabbed and stuff? What characteristics do they have?
What about the cow, the milk, and the baby? The cherry blossoms too and the petals in the river - was that all necessary? It's a bit too much and commercial i.e. lame.
The single-take shooting technique overwhelmed the plot and the characters - I was more interested in knowing how he did it instead of engaged in the story.
I still cannot figure out how it gets such a high rating.
Stranger Things (2016)
Season 3 annoys me.
There were countless moments when they could have acted much quicker e.g. escape, attack, run away, hide, etc.
I mean the last episode - Jim Hopper said count to three with the keys? Seriously? You could have done it already. All they did was stood there and watched and looked panicked e.g. Nancy and Jonathan in the hospital; the kids not running away after Billy broke the sauna room glass window; Nancy in front of the car when Billy tried to crash them outside Starcourt in the last episode, etc.
Max's character made her look silly and valueless.
The continuous arguments between Jim and Joyce were unhelpful.
I used to look up to Jim but he was off putting in this season - hot tempered, impatient and always yelling.
Please don't ruin a good tv series like this.
Chernobyl (2019)
Thank you HBO
At first I was reserved about such high rating. But after having finished the 5 episodes; I can only say it deserves 10/10, or 11/10 actually if it is allowed. The research, the preparation, the consideration, the respect and seriousness put into the production of Chernobyl are clearly seen. I am extremely impressed with its explanation in the final episode on how the power plant exploded (so that we audiences as layman can understand); the many perspectives of the story (the ordinary young guy to deal with animals; the widowed wife; the fire fighters; the scientists; the coal-miners; the government, etc.). I actually feel like I have had a very helpful and engaging history and politics class regarding the Chernobyl that everyone should watch. It's much more than JUST a television series. Thank you HBO.
Velvet Buzzsaw (2019)
Don't watch it
The trailer was more interesting than the movie. The idea is super new and interesting too to be honest but it has failed to execute its idea - which I have no idea what is it anymore after watching it. It is super boring; people just die in weird ways without really a proper explanation. Once again the idea is really good honestly and I had high hopes but no it went so weak and weird and confusing.
Close (2019)
I don't think it's as bad as the score suggests
I think it definitely deserves more than 5.5?
Naomi's acting was really really good - the part crying by the sea? Sophie's acting was good too in the hostel/ hotel.
I am guessing some reviewers are simply Netflix-haters / female-haters I really don't know.
Matilda (1996)
Still good in 2019
It's on Netflix so why not?
I first watched it in 2001 or something and it's still warm and good to watch today in 2019.
It's not badly done at all considering it's a movie produced or shown in 1996.
I like all the characters so much as they all have very distinctive persona and characters. Very good acting. Lots of good references.
Definitely worth a watch! :)
Taylor Swift: Reputation Stadium Tour (2018)
I don't know...
Is it just me or you also saw taylor swift lip-syncing a lot a lot and quite apparently.
I was quite disappointed cause I was hoping to see more of her powerful live singing but it was covered up so much by back up singers...
She only sang the lines she had to and for the rest of the time she was clearly resting her voice. To put it positively I can only say it's a common or smart move?
The dancing and her gestures and moves were all repetitive.
I was hoping she could show more of her real voice instead of dancing the whole night and using back up vocals.
I mean her hair is so super nice and her skin is so good too!!!
I thought I would like her more and understand her talent and capability more after watching but no it holds me back and I have bigger doubts than before watching.
I skipped throughout the entire movie too.
I don't really recommend it honestly.
With all due respects to all Taylor fans; I like some of her songs too!
Ant-Man (2015)
Is it just me or it's underrated?
Seeing Ant-Man sharing almost the same but lower score than Black Panther shocks me. At least I laughed so hard at the Thomas train and how the tiny trains just fell out from the tracks in a no-biggie way.
I felt Ant-Man was very carefully done with a lot of attention putting into it in setting up the scene, background, characters, etc.
Some say it doesn't give a superhero-movie feeling but I actually like how down-to-earth and more "realistic" it is. It gives a new taste to Marvel's heroes movies.
The only thing that bothers me is Hope Pym's acting.
I like the Ant-man a lot. :)
Black Panther (2018)
Disappointing
It's my first time writing a review here.
I was with high expectations only to find out the movie is so flat and plain.
The characters and plot are so weak - it doesn't explain what happens to W'Kabi afterwards - no slight elaboration or explanation on his thoughts and actions before and after; all of a sudden the Black Panther won Erik when he was sooo weak and fragile in previous parts, etc.
So little background on everyone throughout the entire movie. All characters are for sure wasted.
It surprises me the average score can reach 7.4.
Don't rush just because the timeline is tight please Marvel Studio.
