No Tell Motel (2013)

Do Tell Motel
27 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I knew this movie was going in the wrong direction when the driver of the motorhome takes the shortcut and then, for absolutely no reason, goes way too fast until...... yes, the motorhome crashes and the five young occupants have to take shelter in the broken down motel. I'm sorry folks, but believe it or not it just goes downhill from there. There is nothing new here, nor is there anything to make note of in this movie. It is just there. It is a movie. That is all I can say. So, if your only criteria for entertainment for the evening is that it be a movie, then this one qualifies! Otherwise, you can go to the dairy and see how milk is made and have a much better time.

Social Nightmare (2013 TV Movie)

Don't Overlook This One
13 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is a Lifetime Channel movie, so I almost passed it by. I am glad I didn't.

The plot summary is a bit misleading here, as the story is really about what happens when someone hacks into your computer and your accounts and starts posting things that are harmful to others. In this case, Catherine Hardy (Kirsten Prout) is the victim, but no one will believe her. Yes, this is hardly a new theme, but still I found the film to be engaging.

Kirsten Prout is very good as Catherine, in an understated way. The school scenes are believable. Chloe Bridges is convincing as Catherine's best friend. The true surprise here is Daryl Hannah, who I always categorized as an actress getting work because of her beauty. Well, Daryl is no longer a spring chicken, but is very good in the role of Catherine's mother.

This would have actually gotten a better rating, but for the horrible ending. It appears the crew got the word to end this film and wrapped it up with a convenient, one scene let's tie it all together and make everyone warm and fuzzy ending. Bummer!

The Woman (I) (2011)

McKee Hits Stride
15 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I think Lucky McKee hit his stride with this very challenging movie. I enjoyed "May" an awful lot, but some of his other efforts fell short to me. On this one, he gets it right, and this is a movie that could have crashed and burned very easily.

McKee sets an uncomfortable tone early, which serves the movie well. The father is just too nice and affable. You know something is wrong, and there definitely is.

Some reviewers are calling this misogynist, but I don't agree. This movie doesn't hate women, it hates men who mistreat women.

Many movies trying the feral human theme fail. Believability is strained, and inevitably the acting fails. Here, that is not the case. Pollyanna McIntosh is spectacular as the Woman. I was transfixed by her performance. It was 100% believable, and that is what sets this movie apart. Watch this just to see her performance.

But there is more. Sean Bridgers is very strong as the sick, sick patriarch. It is a very subtle performance at first, reminiscent of Terry O'Quinn in "The Stepfather". Great acting.

The son, Zach Rand, is also surprisingly good as the apple that hasn't fallen far from his father's tree. Creepy stuff here.

Finally, once again Angela Bettis is fantastic as Belle Cleek. She has that innate weirdness about her that fits right in to this role. The scene where she bumps into an acquaintance in the supermarket is a head shaker.

I was so impressed with this movie. You should check it out.

Bunnyman (2011)
5/10
Pleasantly Surprised
2 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
A look at the title led me to believe this would be a horror comedy/spoof, but I was wrong and was pleasantly surprised.

This movie is a cross between the old classic "Duel" and "Texas Chainsaw Massacre".

The Duel theme is at the beginning of the movie and repeats throughout - a mysterious truck taunts and terrorizes a car for an unknown reason. This theme is well played, as the director Linbergh has obviously learned what made Duel work, the ominous representation of the truck as it pursues the vehicle. The camera work here was impressive. What I don't understand is why you have a bunnyman drive the truck, which is unusual to say the least, yet then present the truck driver as an unknown entity behind tinted windows (a la Duel).

The TCM theme is obvious, a group of lost youngsters being chased, tortured and killed by a chainsaw wielding maniac. Except, the maniac is wearing a bunny outfit.

The movie is pretty well made, especially considering its low budget. What I just can't figure out is why the bunny outfit? Unlike clowns, for example, bunnies and bunny outfits are not scary nor are they creepy. There appears to be no significance to the outfit, as it could have been any other animal outfit. Oh well...

This movie will not change the world, but I enjoyed it enough and it is certainly better than some of the reviews here would indicate.

Flog Me
29 September 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is getting a lot of bad reviews here. Well, flog me if you want but I enjoyed it! I usually don't mind watching topless zombies dripping with blood chasing potential victims. If you might enjoy that, there is an awful lot of it in this film. The Boo Birds who don't like this film say the females aren't that attractive, or are fat. Splitting hairs, aren't we? After all, we are talking about topless women here; do we really need to analyze why they are topless or how hot they are? There is a lot of criticism of the scene where Zeus takes a dump in the woods - it is gross, it goes on too long, etc. What? How long is too long when a midget is taking a dump in the woods? Step back and realize that the scene shows a midget carnival strong man taking a prolonged plop in the woods for absolutely no reason - the scene does not further the plot one iota! Add to that the fart sounds and the facial contortions, and I admit that I laughed more than once.

Yes, this is a bizarre flick, but it was amusing and not nearly as bad as some of these reviews would have you believe. If you like bare breasts, carnival sideshows, mad scientists and scatological humor then this movie is for you!

Mammoth (2006 TV Movie)
7/10
Surprisingly Good
1 October 2008
I admit that SCI FI has set the bar mighty low when it comes to its original movies. So, I tuned in to Mammoth expecting more of the same. Well, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I really enjoyed this movie.

Vincent Ventresca as Dr. Frank Abernathy is the main reason the movie works. He is sort of a cross between Bruce Campbell and the Absent Minded Professor, and brings a much needed dose of comedy to the story.

The Mammoth itself is an unimpressive, not scary, CGI mess. But Tim Cox wisely minimizes its screen time and leaves it to the actors to carry the movie, and they do a fine job.

The movie moves at a brisk enough pace that you are distracted from the lack of a strong story line. But, again, this movie is about fun, not scares. I recommend it.

The House Next Door (2006 TV Movie)
4/10
Can't Get Over The Lips
25 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This is not an entirely bad movie. The plot (new house built next door seems to be haunted) is not bad, the mood is creepy enough, and the acting is okay. The big problem I had is that, being familiar with Lara Flynn Boyle (from Twin Peaks and other shows), I couldn't get over how different she looks with her apparently new, big lips. I kept staring at them. They look so out of place on her face! They make her look completely different (and not better).

Mark-Paul Gosselaar, the actor who plays Kim the architect who designs and pours his heart and soul into the house, does a fine job. And Lara (as Col) is also quite good (but those lips!) as the owner of the house next door. Her husband, Walker (Colin Ferguson) is appropriately wooden. The various characters who live in the house were also fine. I particularly liked Pie (Charlotte Sullivan) and her husband, Buddy (Stephen Amell), the first people to move into the house. The attempt to involve us in the overall neighborhood vibe fails, unfortunately, as the other neighbors are not particularly likable.

For some reason the director was unable to make the "haunted" house particularly ominous. Other movies (such as Amityville Horror, The Legend of Hell House) manage to achieve that spooky feel, but it just doesn't happen here. The closest is when Col paints a depiction of the house.

Another thing that didn't work for me is the plot twist that occurs with Kim, the architect. Initially, he appears to be a victim of the house like the others (it has sucked him dry of inspiration), but later he seems to have joined forces with it in evil.

Overall, not a bad movie for horror fans if you can take your eyes off those big lips!

Rock Monster (2008 TV Movie)
3/10
Rockin' Out
9 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
The best thing about this movie is getting to see John Polito, who you will instantly recognize because he has been in almost every movie and television series ever made, ham it up as The Colonel. No, they couldn't even bother to give him a name. In an otherwise forgettable film, Ron rocks. He gets drunk. He leads the citizens to fight the rock monster not once, but twice (but has his flask handy all the time). He cheers when the hero, Jason (Chad Collins) defeats the rock monster not once, but twice. Yeah! If you can't tell already, I just loved watching John in this movie. Never mind that he is Italian, but is playing an Eastern Euro (I think!). Never mind that his lines are lame, for the most part. John is on fire! As far as the movie is concerned, the monster looks good, special effects-wise. But, for some reason, the rock monster isn't really scary at all. The Sword In The Stone plot is a retread. You have the wise cracking girl (Alicia Lagano as Toni), and the black guy who apparently has no function in the plot and gets killed early on, the sniveling mayor who gives a woman away in exchange for the village's safety (as if he had the right to do that in the first place), and the lame hero who, for some reason, has the stunningly beautiful Cassandra (Natalie Sperl) fall for him - all because he pulled a sword out of a stone! I suppose you could do worse, but make sure to check it out just to watch John rock!

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (2008 TV Movie)
6/10
An Enjoyable Watch
27 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
If you are wary of seeing the same movie redone again, and again, don't let that stop you from watching this version of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.

No, it is not perfect, and yes it does drag a bit, but there is enough here to recommend it to any horror fan.

There is an interesting enough plot twist that explains Mr. Hyde's existence that gives a new angle to this old story. Dougray Scott is very good in the lead role, and the attorney representing Dr. Jekkyl (Krista Bridges) is very easy to look at and does a fine job in her role, as well.

The transformations from Jekyll to Hyde are actually well done, inasmuch as they are not overdone.

There is one major Hollywood moment - yes, the scientist discovers the antidote just as he is being arrested and is unable to administer it to himself. Oh, if he only had one more second! The trial is difficult to believe, but contrivances are something I have learned to live with as a horror fan.

There is a very nice twist at the end, though not completely surprising.

Although Tom Skerrit is heavily publicized in the ads for the movie, his role is actually rather small and unnecessary.

Over all, well worth a watch.

Never Cry Werewolf (2008 TV Movie)
5/10
Not Bad
12 May 2008
jdanvers is correct, a small part of the plot resembles Dracula. However, this movie more closely resembles "Fright Night". Here's why. Kid notices something is wrong with next door neighbor, and comes to realize neighbor is a werewolf (ok, in Fright Night the neighbor is a vampire). Nobody will believe the kid. So, the kid enlists a wacky TV star to help destroy the monster. In fact, the movie is almost a remake, just substitute werewolf for vampire.

Having said that, I actually enjoyed this movie. The actors were attractive, the plot moved rather well, and the actor playing the werewolf was pretty good. The special effects weren't horrible, although I don't understand why the werewolf always breathed and drooled all over the intended victims for extended periods until they managed to get away.

Overall, you could do a lot worse, especially for a Sci Fi Channel original.

Devil's Diary (2007 TV Movie)
7/10
Surprisingly Good
24 September 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I expected a cheesy Lifetime movie, and instead found myself fully engrossed in this unusually good horror movie. The acting was excellent, and the sets were outstanding. Combining the revenge motif with the supernatural book theme works here.

The movie begins with an atmospheric graveyard scene where one girl is "punked" by her friend. A lightning strike leads them to a grave site and an empty book. One girl is drawn to the book, and takes it home. The inscription on the inside cover tells her that if she believes in the book, the things she writes in it will come true. She tries it, and it works. She then exacts revenge on the "cool" cheerleaders in school who mistreat her and her friends. The revenge scenes are unusual and compelling. The other girl seeks help from her priest which turns out to be a bad idea. At her priest's urging, another priest arrives who knows something about this book - it turns out he knows too much and craves the book. In the meantime, the cheerleader group has figured out that the book is involved and manages to steal it. Again, one of the group is drawn to the book and begins to use it for evil purposes.

The ending is a bit sketchy, as there is the predictable graveyard priest showdown with the evil priest beseeching the pure girl to join him and the book in evil. Beyond that, this movie has a lot to recommend it. So, I would definitely recommend this movie to all horror fans. You won't be disappointed.

Dark Breed (1996)

Misses
3 November 2006
This is an Alien copycat that doesn't have scary monsters and the plot is mixed up. The astronauts inhabited by aliens for some reason are only inhabited part of the time. Why? I don't know and it doesn't matter. You know they are inhabited because they all of a sudden speak in a stupid computerized "scary" voice that isn't scary. The astronauts go places, but it doesn't matter. Then, they rip off the Terminator by having another alien that can kill them. By this time you are extremely bored and don't care. There are, however, lots of explosions. And there is the obligatory "man running away from large explosion just ahead of the leaping flames" scene. Yawn.

Badness is Relative
3 November 2006
This is a truly awful film. Lou Diamond Phillips simply calls this one in. The use of miniature models of the train are laughable. The plot seems to develop on the run (there is an alien on board; oh, and an eco-terrorist is on board too; oh, and the conductor is dead and the train is out of control; oh, and the train is going to run into another train one hour ahead; oh, and that train has nuclear waste on it...). I mean, come on really! The alien monsters are not scary (although there are a lot of them), and the acting is abysmal. Check out the guy playing the "next President" - do you really think he could be President? For goodness sake, he has spent his whole acting career playing bad guys!
