Moontide (1942)
neither a high tide or low tide for Moon Tide
The characters in this movie were on the interesting side even though there were pretty much straight forward and didn't have much emotional depth. The relationship between the characters themselves made the characters somewhat interesting. For Claude Rains fans, it has been said that this is possibly the closest the Rains ever came to playing himself. So, it is interesting to see what he was moderately like.
The drinking montage in the beginning of the film is interesting because it is very surreal...it sort of reminded me of that silent Salivor Dali film that was made.
However, the film was very slow moving and the plot was not really either clever or in-depth. It was a very straight forward plot that you don't really find out what is driving the plot until the end. In the beginning it seems like just a lot of loose ends.
Over all, I wouldn't discourage anybody from seeing it if they really wanted to. After all, I even own a copy!
The Clairvoyant (1935)
Not to much to offer, but a lot of fun to watch
The story revolves around Claude Rains' character named Maximus who is a clairvoyant and who have predictions that seem to come true to much of his surprise in the beginning. It is evident that this film is a low budget, but low budget does not necessarily bad. This movie by itself was just interesting fun and easy to watch. There is a stable plot, but it doesn't really go to much depth. It's only a little over an hour anyways. But when you don't feel like thinking about all the symbolism and subplots in movies, the Clairvoyant (The Evil Mind) is a perfect film for entertainment. Besides the unmistakable Claude Rains makes the role come alive with out trying to hard! And perhaps a warning: The copy i have is ancestored, so if you play to rent or buy this movie from a seller, it may not be restored. So that's another thing to get over. There are a few jumpy parts in the condition of the film.
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)
Pure Capra Magic
After seeing this movie, I really tried to figure out what took me so long to see it. Maybe political dramas don't really get my interest, but this was more than just a political drama. Every character in this movie had life breathed into them by incredible acting and those who supplied that acting. At the end of this movie, I was REALLY rooting for the good guy Jimmy Stewart, and hoping that the bad guys went you know where! Claude Rains and Jimmy both gave noteworthy performances as their rivalry and tensions brought the movie to a whole new level! I strongly recommend this movie to anybody who is looking for a solid story line and great character development!
