Reviews
Ginî piggu: Manhôru no naka no ningyo (1988)
Strange and creepy atmosphere
I have seen a lot of horror films in my day, and was able to watch the first three Guinea Pig films with complete ease. But there is something about this one that just gets to me.
This is the fourth film to come out of the Guinea Pig series, following after the Devils Experiments, Flower of Flesh and Blood, and He Never Dies. The film follows a painter who visits a location that originally was a river, from his childhood. The river has now become a sewer, so the painter climbs down in and starts doing sketches of what he sees. He comes across a mermaid; apparently he has come across this mermaid before, back in his youth. He asks the mermaid if he can paint her, she gladly allows him but as he starts sketching he sees that she is injured. He takes her back to his apartment and attempts to mend her wounds. The mermaid tells him to stop helping her and to paint. He does so and as a result the mermaid's injuries begin to infect and consume her body. The painter desperately wants to help her, but she is determined that he will finish his painting. The film concludes with a shocking and unexpected ending.
I'm not really sure why but after this film ended I had a very gloomy and odd feeling that followed me through out the rest of the day. The film itself is alright, not the best, but its effect it had on me definitely made it the most effective out of the series, with its ability to shock.
Most fans of the Guinea Pig series would probably recommend Flower of Flesh and Blood, or Devils Experiments. I recommend this one.
Les mémés cannibales (1988)
Not a great film, but great to add to your collection.
The idea of this flick is hilarious. Just hearing about it made me laugh. I finally obtained a copy of this film and immediately sat down and gave it a watch.
The film takes place at a family gathering. Its two grannies birthday party and everyone is pretending to be excited to be there. When it comes time to open the presents the grannies come across a gift that isn't from anyone in the family. The present releases a demonic smoke possessing the two old ladies. Now they have super strange and are hungry for human flesh!
Overall the film has some good parts. It kind of reminded me of Peter Jackson's Bad Taste, but at times I found myself getting bored. The film has some great scenes and will definitely make you laugh, especially the demonic granny hanging from the chandelier, but over all I found the majority of the film kind of slow. I was waiting for the next gore scene to pop up but during that time I found myself dazing off.
Its a great film to own for the novelty of it, but don't expect much from it.
Ginî piggu 3: Senritsu! Shinanai otoko (1986)
Blood, Blood, and More Blood
This is the third film out of the Guinea Pig series. Like the two previous films this film focuses on blood and gore with the hopes of disgusting its viewers. But unlike the first two this film takes the practice of presenting vile imagery in a new approach... A humorous one.
The film is supposed to be a reenactment of an event that actually took place. Supposedly a man was found dead in his apartment. The scene looked so horrific, as his body was badly mutilated and it appeared as though the remains had been played with. But after further investigation no fingerprints, other than the victims, were found at the scene of the crime, and all the injuries were angled as though the victim did it with his own hands...
This is the first splatter comedy to come out of the Guinea Pig series, and is a real joy ride. The film is very over the top, and I recommend it to any gorehounds out there.
Video Violence 2 (1988)
Very entertaining, but didn't feel like a full film.
This sequel to Gary Cohen's Video Violence follows our two sadistic killers from the first film, Howard and Eli. These two crazy cats have moved from making their little snuff films and have gone to do bigger and better things. Now they host their own pirated T.V. show where viewers can send in their own homemade snuff films.
This film, though nothing close to as good as the original Video Violence, is one entertaining little flick. Unfortunately the film feels as though it falls short. It seemed more as just a special feature for Video Violence 1, rather than a whole new film. This may be because the film has such a weak plot.
I kind of had the impression that the original Video Violence was a film that was taken very seriously with the intention of making a well put together film, and that this sequel was made just for fun. Video Violence 2 is a lot more campy and focuses on humor more than gore.
Over all the film is very entertaining, but didn't really feel like a full length movie.
Video Violence (1987)
A fun ride!
I came across this film while on one of my movie hunts and decided to buy this flick because I had read it was very rare to come across. Boy am I glad I did!
The film follows a couple as they are settling into a new town. The husband opens a video store and hires an assistant to work with him. As the days pass he starts to realize that all the locals in the area are only renting from the horror section. This makes him start questioning his surroundings, and to make matters worse he begins finding tapes on his desk that aren't part of his video collection. After having viewed one of the films he realizes that one, or a group, of the locals are killing tourists and video taping the murders. Our store owner takes the tapes to the police only to find that they have no interest in investigating these murders. Now he is on his own and begins to investigate the situation himself.
This is probably one of the most original films I have seen in a long time. It is very low budget, but surprisingly the acting is very good. The film has a really good feel to it and you will find yourself smiling all the way through. Great piece of work.
Terreur cannibale (1980)
Not the worst of the genre
Now this film is by far not a masterpiece out of the Italian cannibal sub-genre, but it definitely is not the worst either. The film follows two crooks as they kidnap a young girl and take refuge in the jungle. They stay at a friends house, but one of the crooks cant control his urges and rapes the house owners wife. As a result the two crooks are thrown out into the jungles to be eaten by the local cannibals living in the area.
Now if you are not a fan of the cannibal genre you will have no interest in watching this film, because in all honesty it is not that good. But for you cannibal enthusiasts out there I suggest giving this flick a watch. It is the last film to have come out of the "Cannibal Boom" and though it has been stated to be the worst film to come out of the genre I ensure you that this is not the case. White Cannibal Queen, or Primitif deserve such a title, this film on the other hand can be categorized as one of those "its so bad its good" types. The natives look European, the cannibalism scenes go on for too long and is obviously just a pig torso, and the dialog is humorous.
I would say the greatest element in the film is the dubbing of little girl who is kid napped voice. It is clear that it is just a grown women trying to sound like a child and failing miserably, definitely something that keeps you chuckling through out the film.
Ginî piggu 2: Chiniku no hana (1985)
Amazing Special Effects!
This is the second addition to the Guinea Pig series, and probably the most infamous. The film follows a young women who is kidnapped by a man in a samurai suit. The young lady finds herself tied to a bed and drugged. The drugs that are given to her not only prevent her from feeling any pain, but in fact makes her enjoy it to a degree. The samurai man begins cutting off limbs and slicing the women up left and right, but he is not doing it to be cruel, he is doing it for beauty. In his eyes its not only the outer appearance of a women that makes her beautiful but it is also what is inside.
Personally the film itself was kind of dull, with having virtually not plot at all, but I am amazed by how detailed and realistic the special effects are. The film focuses on every detail of the human body and how it reacts when getting a sharp blade through it, and slicing it apart. I was jaw dropped by what I saw.
Like I have said in previous posts I personally didn't find this film to be very disturbing, but I have become almost completely desensitized do to viewing films like these over the years. I think for the average horror fan that this would be a landmark film in their horror viewing, and would definitely open their eyes to something they have not seen before. But for the hardcore gorehounds such as myself it is good to just have a copy of this film for its novelty.
Guinea Pig: Ginî piggu - Akuma no jikken (1985)
Guts to the face!
This is the first out of the Guinea Pig series, and is one of the more infamous films out of the collection.
It took me a long time to finally man up and get my hands on a copy of this notorious group of films. I bought the Guinea Pig Box Set and decided to watch the collection in order by release date. So I popped this sucker in and sat down.
From what I had read on the internet, and realizing the content involved in this film, I was expecting to test my nerves in full force. This ended up not being the case.
The film focuses on a group of men who kidnap a woman and begin torturing her with the hopes of discovering the human breaking point, and how long a human can tolerate pain.
Sounds like one sick flick right? Wrong. The film fails to shock. This may be because I have become desensitized over the years do to my obsession with horror, but I think it is safe to say that any true gorehound could sit through this with ease.
On the other hand an individual who does not have a well knowledge of this type of film will most likely be overwhelmed and disgusted by the images they see on the screen. Though it failed to shock me the film contains some pretty mean spirited and graphic scenes of violence. Including the ripping out of fingernails, intestines thrown at an unconscious woman, and a needle through the eye.
Overall I think for majority of the gorehounds on this board that you should just get your hands on a copy of this film for the novelty of it, but I suggest that for any new comers to these type of films that you should work your way up to this one.
Diary of the Dead (2007)
Not Romero's Best Work...
When I first became aware of this film I was very excited. I eagerly awaited the chance to sit down with a big bag of popcorn and watch another one of Romero's zombie classics.
When I first read about the film's plot I was a little skeptical about the film. It sounded like just another one of those shaky hand-held style films that seem to have become so popular these days. In the back of my mind I was expecting a cliché, but I hoped that Romero would have some trick up his sleeve and take the film in a new direction.
Finally the time had come. I drove for an hours and a half to the nearest movie theater that was showing a screening of the film. I grabbed my bag of popcorn and sat down. The trailers played, and the film began.
(MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS)
The film follows a group of film students as they are forced to put their projects on hold and flee the area do to a unexplainable re-animation of the dead. The students decide to document their journey in hopes to help other future people understand the events that have taken place. Romero presents the film as though these events have already taken place, and that what we are watching is the students remaining footage. This is presented in a very documentary like style, with narration from one of the surviving students, and obvious editing.
As the film goes on it becomes apparent what Romero trying to say with this film. Focusing on todays myspace generation, and how people live to document. People live their lives to write and blog about it later. This become very clear with the characters the more the film unfolds.
(END OF SPOILERS)
Personally I found this film to be a little rushed. As though Romero had a vision but had limited time and wasn't able to put the full potential into the film. This may not be the case, but its how it felt. I also found the narration to be a little in your face. I understood what Romero was trying to do in the beginning and didn't need to be reminded repeatedly.
Overall I give it 6/10 because it was very entertaining, and was very much a Romero film, but it definitely is not close to his best work.
