Cats (2019)
Geez it's not that bad!
There is no way this movie warrants a 1/10! I've read people's complaints and need to address some of them first up. Gives this movie some all important context:
There's barely a storyline!!
People need to realise this movie is based on a musical that in turn is based on a book of poems about cats. Books of poems don't have storylines, they have concepts. When creating the musical TS Elliott's widow required ALWebber to stay true to the work. No freestyling allowed. So that's why there is minimal plot-line in both the musical and this movie.
It's all singing and dancing!
That's because it's a musical people! Surely you knew this going in.
It's boring!
Yes, but the boring songs are the exact same ones as in the musical. No surprises there. You were never going to like every song.
The CGI's creepy!
Yes in parts it looks like when people photoshop their family's heads on Elves in those Christmas dancing videos. But not all the time.
The cats have hands! That's cos they're actors. The cats walk around on two feet too. Who cares.
All this just does not add up to a 1/10, even with with the addition of Rebel Wilson's most annoying character/awful song. Jennifer Hudson is superb and commanding as always; the newbie playing Victoria was beautiful both with her stunning ballet moves and her delicate soft voice singing Ms Swift's new song; Judy Dench was fabulous and stately as Old Deuteronomy. Blow me down even Jason Derulo had some charisma too!
Yes, the singing seemed a bit amateur at times but the orchestration and dancing in scenes like the Jellicle ball balanced this out.
I feel people just love to hate musicals and ALWebber. It always amuses me greatly how people publicly hate musicals but Cats ran for like 16 years and Phantom of the Opera (arguably ALWebber's most famous musical) is still going on Broadway after 30 years. Someone must be liking them and be going along!!!!
This movie unfortunately will end up suffering the same fate, with the low scoring reviews perpetuating this anomaly. Sad it's so uncool to like musicals.
Oh well, I like them and I appreciated Cats for what it is. And you should too :)

Innovative Homegrown Show
I love innovative creative unique well-acted shows and this one did not disappoint. Even better as it's an Australian Stan Original. The concept was mysterious and layered, the direction was whimsy with a soundtrack to match and all the performances were just superb, especially Ryan Corr. Loved it loved it loved it! I for one hope TV of this quality is the new direction for Australian TV.
