Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022)
Pinnacle of Star Trek-Season 2 improves upon Season 1 with La'an (Christina Chong) a standout character
I enjoyed Season 1 overall but did find some of the middle episodes between the excellent 1st and 10th episodes not as interesting. Season 2 I found much more consistent and the overall quality was also better. The production value is outstanding throughout with effects comparable to high-budget science-fiction movies and an excellent musical theme. The main characters are very likeable and very well-portrayed with fantastic convincing actors for all the main roles. In Season 1 I wanted more Chris Pike (Anson Mount) who was my favourite character, because I did not find some of the supporting characters' storylines as compelling. Even though Pike is probably in season 2 less, I found the supporting characters' storylines much more interesting, with La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) in particular a standout for me with a deeper storyline and emotional empathy that I really engaged with. I also found Joseph M'Benga's (Babs Olusanmokun) past fascinating and unexpected. I particularly enjoyed season 2 episode 3 "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" as it was a truly unique episode that was both heartfelt and humorous until its tragic end. The romance between La'an and Jim Kirk (Paul Wesley) brought out the best of both characters and actors and showed us a new side to La'an that we had not seen before whilst also giving us a good idea what this version of Jim Kirk is like. It is one of the best, most convincing and heartfelt romances I have seen on TV or film and I became deeply emotionally invested in La'an and Jim Kirk's relationship for the rest of the season. That episode was my favourite from the whole show and I truly hope that even after La'an and Jim Kirk's conversation where mutual feelings were expressed but Carol was mentioned near the end of season 2 episode 9 "Subspace Rhapsody" that the show writers can find a way for La'an and Jim Kirk to be together permanently in the future.
Star Trek (2009)
Outstanding
As someone who has never been interested in Star Trek I was not expecting to like this movie and saw it years after it was released. I was absolutely delighted to be positively surprised and blown away by how good this film is. I think that Star Trek fans probably enjoyed it as much as I and anyone else with limited Star Trek knowledge did and anyone in either of these groups hesitant to try it should absolutely give it a try.
Outriders (2021)
Incredible game
I just wished I could have played this on a next-gen console as I am sure it would look stunning. The gameplay is incredible, graphics amazing, storyline original and unique. The servers have seemingly been fixed as unfortunately they were a major issue at the start for this game and contributed to many of the negative reviews as they kept locking people out (myself included) but since that has all seemingly been fixed now I can give this game a perfect rating.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Doesn't feel like a Star Wars Film-So disappointing
This disappointed me so much, I was expecting to really enjoy it being a complete Star Wars fanatic but it just didn't feel like a Star Wars film at all. I could (and have) rant on for hours and days about how much I dislike this movie and how much is wrong with it but I think the best thing to do is just to say skip it, maybe look up the few important plot points (basically just some of what Luke, Rey and Kylo do) on the internet and watch Rise of Skywalker instead after Force Awakens.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Incredible conclusion to the Star Wars Story
I want to thank JJ Abrams for making this movie as I was so disappointed by The Last Jedi I actually delayed seeing this until years after it was released as I wasn't interested. However, when I did eventually see it, I absolutely loved it! All involved are amazing. An amazing conclusion to the Star Wars Saga. Visually stunning, you should watch this on the biggest and best screen you can.
Justice League: Doom (2012)
Fantastic animated movie
I highly recommend this movie for anyone familiar or not with the characters or source material. Particularly, this exhibits amongst the best understanding of Batman I have seen, especially in animation but across all media.
Gladiator (2000)
Masterclass
I really don't want to give anything away for anyone if they haven't seen it so all I will say is Russell Crowe is brilliant (as are all the cast), the scenery is breathtaking, the soundtrack is one of the best, and emotionally it is possibly the most enthralling and affecting film I have seen. Watch on the biggest and best screen you have available so you can fully appreciate it and the sense of scale.
Man of Steel (2013)
Gets better every time I see it
I love this film, Henry Cavill is fantastic and completely embodies and understands the character. I have watched this film several times and it is something that you can watch over and over again and still enjoy it every time. Zack Snyder does a great job as director and for Christopher Nolan fans yes he was involved in a different capacity as well. All involved are great.
Wonder Woman (2017)
My favourite film
I love this film, an absolute must-watch for everyone. Nothing compares within the genre (or outside of it in my opinion). Everyone involved deserves great credit for this film, but I want to give special credit to Gal Gadot (all the actors are great, but she completely embodies the character in a manner rarely seen) and Zack Snyder, who not everyone realises was responsible for casting Gal Gadot in the first place. The director Patty Jenkins deserves a special mention for an oustanding job including apparently having to fight to keep what is my favourite scene from the movie. Again, everyone involved deserves credit, but I can't mention everyone here.
Inception (2010)
Masterpiece
I love this film, one of my favourites of all time. If you haven't seen it yet, go and watch it on the best screen you have available as soon as you can. The cast is fantastic, storyline amazing and visually great. I don't want to include any spoilers for those who haven't seen it yet, but you must.
The Angry Birds Movie (2016)
Positively hilarious
As someone who spent a lot of time at school playing Angry Birds when it first came out and was popular for years, including the many spin-offs and sequels, I found this film absolutely hilarious. The colour palette is extremely vibrant and the animation very well done and it is a film that I can rely on to cheer me up whenever I need to. The many references and similarities to the games are welcome but I think the general positivity/vibrancy would be welcomed by those unfamiliar with the source material as well, though the jokes/moments are even funnier when you are familiar with the characters.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)
Perfect for fans
Anyone who grew up with the teenage mutant ninja turtles should enjoy this. Amazing to see all the characters come to life and I ended up liking some characters even more than I did from the comics/cartoons!
The Witcher (2019)
Perfect for everyone
This is fantastic, perfect for anyone who is either familiar with the games or books or has never met any of the characters before as I hadn't at the time when I first watched it. Henry Cavill is absolutely fantastic, showcasing how good an actor he is and how diverse his different roles can be. If anything is confusing at the start give it a chance for the rest of the season and you will be rewarded. Highly recommended for everyone.
El laberinto del fauno (2006)
Absolute masterpiece
This was not at all the film I was expecting, but definitely the best foreign language film I have ever seen and one of the best overall. Just be aware it is a 15-rated film which merits that certificate and is not a children's film.
Gisaengchung (2019)
Dangerously depressing
This film made me feel so depressed I would actively discourage anyone from seeing it who feels down at times. I do always try to be as positive as I can when talking about anything but this film made me feel so hopeless that I don't have anything positive to say about it. It left me in a really dark place and I wish I had never seen it. No-one will like seeing this film, critics may have given good reviews, but none of them could say they enjoyed the film. It makes you feel so depressed that since this is something I do struggle with, it affected my mental health after watching this.
The quality was really disappointing, I predicted everything that was going to happen at every point in the story and none of the main characters felt anything approaching realistic as they were extremely one-dimensional and horrible from the opening moments with a completely age-inappropriate relationship involving one of those characters throughout the film. But most of all this is a film which is completely rotten to its core. The worst film I have ever seen. Avoid it if you want to enjoy yourself.
The Wonderful World of Disney: Home Alone 4: Taking Back the House (2002)
Nearly the worst film I have ever seen
I'm not exaggerating... I saw this years ago when I was a child and exactly the target demographic for this film and it was for a long time the worst film I had ever seen. There is absolutely no need for this film. The original still stands up today, this never did. It tries to imitate the original and 'modernise' elements of the story but it doesn't capture any of the magic of the original. Few films have ever annoyed me so much. Avoid watching this at all costs and rewatch the original instead if you want a Home Alone fix.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)
Most spectacular film I have ever seen
This film was amazing. I have never been this in awe of such an incredible visual experience. I urge anyone to watch this with an open mind and just enjoy it. It's absolutely stunning.
