I don't even like football!
16 September 2023
I love British movies and this one didn't disappoint. I knew I would like after reading the Guardians review. They hated it and they are always wrong about everything so, guess what? It was really good. One of those quiet movies about something quite trivial but has you routing for them at the end. Britain is renowned for supporting for the underdog and this movie has you cheering them on till the end. Bromley FC are going down and it's up to schoolboy Dave to save them. Even better that it's a true story and great to see the actors with the characters they played at the end.

Proof that you don't need to be a superstar or action hero to tell a good tale.

Disjointed, confusing and nothing to do with WW2
27 July 2023
I quite enjoyed series1 even though it was very unbelievable and quite far fetched. Just started watching season 2 and there's such a huge leap from season 1 to season 2. Half the cast is missing, there is no continuation in the story line and loads of new characters that seem to have been dumped in with no idea why or where they came from. It jumps around so much I'm losing interest and haven't got to the end of the first episode.

As for the historical aspect, it's seems more like a sci fi, an imagined war. Why can't the BBC stick to the facts, why does it try to make a modern drama about the past. Either make a historical drama or a modern drama, please don't make a mish mash. So in accurate I really can't see the point.

Again!
26 March 2023
Why does the BBC insist on wasting the license payers money on constant remakes. There are some amazing books and stories out there but, apart from the fact that this one has been done to death, it's also the worst in a very long line. I was expecting something amazing, having Olivier Coleman in it but, no - the acting is terrible. Where do they get these people! The script is appalling Dickens will be turning in his grave. The BBC used to be so good at costume drama's but they have clearly lost their way, 20 minutes in and I had to force myself to watch more. Couldn't make it to the end it was just so bad. The only good review I've seen is from someone who didn't even watch it, just reviewed because they were virtue signalling!

Dark comedy, very dark!
26 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A strange movie. I think around 2 thirds I was laughing out loud and the other third almost depressed. The funny bits were so typically, what I think of anyway, Irish humour. The characters were amazing and so well played, especially Colin Ferrel.

The island is very claustrophobic, so few people to interact with, everyone knowing everyone else's business. But the real story is when someone has a mid life crisis leading to depression etc. They take it out on their nearest and dearest, in this case their best friend. What happens when it goes too far? The ending of the movie was quite bleak leaving us with 2 completely fractured lives, hurting each other so much that it can never be resolved.

What was the point of this movie?
12 February 2023
What a dreadful way to treat an icon. Wasn't her life sad enough without using it to make up this trite, rubbish? The only reason to make a fictional account of Marilyn's life rather than a biographical account was obviously to add more sex and titillation. We could have seen recreations of all those beautiful gowns but, no! Instead Marilyn spends most of the movie half naked, why?

Many of her greatest roles weren't even mentioned! Instead we had 2 hours of sex and madness and most of it completely made up! What was the point of this movie?

I am a huge fan and thought Ana de Armas, Bobby Cannavale & Adrien Brody were brilliant but the story was so weak and parts just ridiculous. I would have loved to have seen a real attempt at a biography of Marilyn Monroe instead we got a debased account of a tragic star, made by men and obviously one for the boys!

Brilliant British movie
21 January 2023
I love British movies and even more so when they are based on a true story. The Brits are great at portraying the stories of every day people. Okay, British movies don't have the huge budgets or special effects of Hollywood but when it comes to character led stories the Brits are the best. This is a great story, it might be a feel good story but it's true. It's very topical showing the banking elite and their failures and how they appeared to the everyday man. The actors played their parts brilliantly and showed a part of Britain during a particular time. I love this film and hope that every one watches it and takes away the belief in community that te film portrays.

Marie Antoinette (2022– )

Loved it!
17 January 2023
From what I've read about Marie Antoinette the actual story is fairly accurate. Okay there may be some inaccuracies but not anything important. The actors are brilliant and are completely believable, especially the awkward Louis. I felt genuine sadness for these people trapped inside their gilded cages, especially when we can see what is to come at their end. You get a real insight into how these people were just pawns in a power game. I was surprised and extremely pleased at how unPC it is, considering its made by the BBC but for once they put historical accuracy before virtue signalling. I cant see the point in making a historical drama thats not historical. Hope this is a sign of things to come, it's really good!

Whine, whine, whine!
12 January 2023
I can't bear to watch anymore! It's so depressing. Why would anyone pay to watch 2 super rich people who had it all constantly whine about how awful their lives are! They want privacy but they also want to be super famous and receive constant adulation. Sorry, but to get any kind of adulation you have to do something amazing not just constantly cry about poor little you! Im sure people would have a lot more respect if they did what they said they were going to do and lived quietly with their children. Trying to get the world to hate the monarchy by constantly harping on about them is ridiculous and just seems like sour grapes because you can't be a member of the Royal family and a movie star! Tried to get an idea of their angle in all this but I'm too grown up to watch any more. I hope Netflix have a clause where they can get a refund I understand they paid an awful lot for this.

Absolutely loved it!
2 September 2022
Had to admit as a die hard fan,I wasn't expecting too much but after waiting months to sse it. And watching the previews again and again. I absolutely loved it. It felt very reminiscent of the films, which, as it's a prequel to those it was was perfect. A few names we know already, although younger versions, and a few new ones but, hopefully we are going to learn how these characters turned into the greats we are familiar with. Galadrial is already showing how she became such a great leader.

The cast was great, except, Lenny Henry! Really! Kept waiting for him to make some stupid comment!

Overall it was well worth the wait and I for one can't wait for the next episode!

Worst Austen I've ever seen
29 July 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I only got 10 minutes in and had to switch off. Netflix can't do period drama so just leave it to the people who can.

Historically inaccurate and so far removed from the novel it shouldn't be allowed to have any links to Jane Austens novel.

It's obviously aimed at young people and Netflix seem to believe that young people are a bit thick and know nothing of history or Austen. How condescending.

If you want to learn about Mary Queen of Scott's then don't watch this.
15 January 2021
It appears that historical dramas aren't fashionable at the moment, well not factual historical dramas. Diversity is fine but not in a historical movie. If they made a film about slavery or Africa would they make half the cast white? No there would be an outcry. Why is it wrong to use white actors to play indigenous American Indians but right to have black and Asian actors playing indigenous British people? Diversity has its place in the movies but not in historical dramas. Another historical flop.

Amazing roller coaster ride until the end
12 February 2020
I loved this, it was so exciting with so many twists and turns you just had to keep watching. A fast paced story with brilliant acting. The reason I only gave it 7 stars was the ending was absolutely awful. It was 5 minutes too long, if it had finished at the resolution without trying to round everything off nicely it would have been so much better. I think Netflix should cut those last 5 minutes they were unnecessary and totally unbelievable. I'm afraid the ending ruined what had been one of the best crime series I've seen in ages.

BBC has lost the plot
22 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
What a load of tripe. It's like A Christmas Carol trying to be something else. They are trying to explain everything before it happens. Marley visits Scrooge because he's been told it's the only way to redeem himself. The way the grim reaper speaks is like the bear from the yogurt ads. It's all a huge joke but it's not funny and not very watchable, which is a shame because the actors are really good, the story is brilliant but who the hell wrote it? A a GCSE student? It's ridiculous.

Missed so much!
9 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I was so excited about this move and went with a friend who, like me, is an avid Tolkien fan. We both left feeling quite disappointed. I felt that unless you know the Lord of the Rings stories well much of this movie would be irrelevant. Elements of Tolkien's life were used to link it to the Lord of the Rings stories and try to show where the ideas came from. I love the story of Tolkien's relationship with his wife but this was glossed over. Most of the movie was about his relationship with his friends but there was so much more to tell. The first half of the movie was quite dull and slow. If you're an avid fan you may like it but if you know anything about Tolkien you might find it disappointing.

I so wanted to like this
4 May 2019
I love this story and couldn't wait to see the latest rendition of it. I read that Bradley Cooper had to lower his voice; why? Was it to sound like Kris Kristofferson? I could barely understand a word he said! The romance seemed secondary to the fame game, without the romance there is no story. I love the other three Star is born movies but I'm sorry in my opinion this was a huge flop.

Why does it have to be accurate? It's good TV!
31 January 2019
I'm a historian so I know it's not accurate but I'm taking it for what it is, a really enjoyable watch. There are some lovely moments like when the 2 auxiliary are discussing why each country has different gods. It really made me think, 'did they ever really wonder these questions?'. If it gets people talking about history it can only be good!

Amazing talent
19 January 2019
I love this show. The dancers are so talented and it's the audience who votes them in or out. The feedback from the judges is spot on unlike the self satisfying judges on The Voice. Great Saturday night entertainment.
