De uskyldige (2021)
What a treat
"We were just playing a little bit."
A bunch of young kids get to know each other and start hanging out during their Nordic summer holiday, in the middle of several bland high rises surrounded by forest, and discover they have some special talents. Now they have to figure out how to deal with them.
Might not sound like much of a story, but oh boy, it is! The young actors do an amazing job of showing, well, what it's like to be a kid discovering the world, figuring out right from wrong, and the details of life that adults with "responsibilities" often miss. There's a lot more going on than immediately meets the eye. Which is all the more haunting, creepy and beautiful in such a boring yet serene environment that makes the slightly otherworldly story shine through even more.
Highly recommended, especially (yet not exclusively) if you appreciate tense, slow-burning, and beautifully shot Nordic movies and TV series.
The Office: Andy's Ancestry (2012)
Different times, higher standards
Unfortunately, this episode is is pretty racist, making fun of Andy's family's (supposed) slave owning past in a throwaway manner - especially being enjoyed by his white coworkers. At the time, seemed funny, perhaps - thankfully, today, society does not consider this part of history entertaining, or fair game to be used for lighthearted comedic entertainment. Times change. And sometimes, for the better.
Love, Death & Robots: Life Hutch (2021)
Two short movies in one.
A wounded starship pilot needs to fight off a malfunctioning maintenance robot to get to safety, after his ship crashes after a space fight. The main character (who looks extremely real, which is not always the case for animated humans) only speaks two words in the entire movie. Not more is needed for an exciting thrill ride - both in an intergalactic space fight, as well as on the ground, mano a mano (or whatever the robot equivalent is).
Exciting little movie.
Good Omens (2019)
Masterful mini-series.
A sheer delight of a mini-series. Full of heart, wit, and humor, looking at the bright and dark sides of heaven, hell, and most of all, humanity. And with impeccable characters and acting, directorial pace, and visuals.
I haven't read the book by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman yet, but now, I'll most certainly have to. Having said that, I'm sure both must be (or would have been) very happy with the result.
Absolute Giganten (1999)
A beautiful small movie dealing with some of life's big issues
The last night together for three friends in Hamburg, before one of them will board a ship to Africa. Crazy, wild, touching. A tribute to their friendship and friendship in general. And a tribute to that unique Northern German city as well. Plus a fantastic soundtrack which adds a lot to the movie: lots of electronic music, some rock, fast, pumping, but also minimal in the lonely moments of the story. Not to forget the great cast of these three unlike friends - and the girl, of course. And, last but not least: A tribute to passion, to what is called "Fernweh" in German, the need to get out of where you are right now and see the whole big world, without - in my impression - forgetting the loneliness that accompanies the traveler who doesn't quite know where he belongs (yet?).
What should I say? It's a wonderful small big movie.
