The Lovers (2023)
A Little Piece of Irish Heaven
I pay a monthly subscription to Sundance Now so I have unfettered access to musician/actor Tim Minchin's Upright. One day, I realized that since I was handing over my hard-earned money, I should at least try to watch the other shows on the streaming service. So I started a list. Shows like this are why I'm glad I took the time. I would never have known about it otherwise. Just another show in a swirling sea of other shows. (So many shows, so little time.) But every episode was adorable. The two main leads are well cast and have obvious chemistry. The male lead even throws out a Tim Minchin vibe (atheist, smartypants, somewhat famous, slightly ginger, beard, etc etc). The female lead is a very complicated woman and somewhat abrasive, but she has her reasons and her spunk and snark are quickly appreciated. It's not sappy. It's real and down-to-earth and original. I hope there is a Season 2 and beyond. It's a romance for 2024.
Ylvis mot Ylvis: Kampen om gullplaten (2024)
Ylvisåker Boys Strike Again
These two brothers are two extremely talented musicians who have always been known for being able to create entire songs up on the spur of the moment. Just toss anything at them. They have known each other so long that harmonies just appear out of nowhere and it seems rehearsed even though it's not. It's a little strange to have them compete against each other doing this as working with people you don't know as well is a lot tougher, but they make it work. Their partners so far this season have seemed up to the task and I love their outrageous costumes. I look forward to many more episodes of this series!
Upright: Day Two (2019)
The show's amazing / The captions? Not so great
Anyone who needs captions will be disappointed. Lots missed & done incorrectly. I don't blame the show; I blame the captionists. Did they not care? Anyway, if you can't make out the lyrics to what Tim is singing at the beginning of this episode, it goes like this:
Ya took me dancing on a Saturday night,
I got a feelin you feelin all right,
Rolled up to a bar, got out of the car,
Turn up the music and turn down the lights.
Leon, doling out and popping the E's and
Dirty girl is dropping the C-bomb
Later she'll be getting all flirty
Hitchin her skirt, she'll be singin,
Boy, gonna make love to ya
Let the light flow through ya.
(Gonna make you call for the lord, boy
Gonna make you sing for the lord)
Gonna take you to heaven
Turn it up to eleven.
These are taken from a tweet Tim posted back in 2021).
Robin Hood (2018)
Tim Minchin playing a religious man ... worth it just for that :)
Came for Tim. Stayed for Tim. The rest? I would've enjoyed it more if there had been chemistry between Robin & Marian, but when it got to the part where she goes to the castle to find him after learning he's NOT DEAD (and I don't care how much time has passed), if she truly loved him at all, she should have been standing at the door of his now-decimated ancestral home (which was once HER home) and been sobbing. For all the loss. Even if she had moved on with another, tears were so important here. Once I saw she was so cold, I didn't care about her character at all. Had I played it, I would have dropped to my knees. I would have been a wreck. I'm assuming no tears was supposed to mean she's a strong woman. I think tears mean you have a heart.
Back to the Outback (2021)
Tim Minchin as a spoiled koala bear named Pretty Boy ...
If that isn't enough to draw you in, then watch this for the other characters and the animation. Tim also has a song at the end, which, of course, is just Tim being his usual talented self. Sweet enough for kids but adults will find it has its bites here and there. This really reminds me of how badly I would like to see a Tim project, Larrikins. Maybe someday. It's never over until it's over. This will keep your attention through-out. Highly recommended. Did I mention it has Tim Minchin? Mention Minchin? (Sorry, I just love to say that out loud. Like 'toy boat'). There's some other people in it, too. LOL.
Upright (2019)
Tim Minchin And His Amazing Technicolor Imagination
The only thing I would have done differently was that once Lucky had money again in Season 2, he should have hunted down Matty's Ute and fixed it up and gotten it back to Meg. She did so much to help him return a most beloved piano. It's the least he could have done. Perhaps that could be Season 3. They get the Ute back and some silly little side trip to make sure all the bugs are worked out and everything is alright on it goes awry somehow. Maybe they road trip with it to a gig to see Lucky's daughter play in her first band and perhaps someone in Billie's band isn't who they say they are. That's one of the best things about a well-written story like this. It's always fun to try to continue it in your own head. :)
Tim Minchin: Back (2022)
He is Aging Like Fine White Wine (Under the Sun)
I rented this. On my third watching in that 48 hour window, so buying it will happen. That's okay. He's worth it. Why I want to give my money to someone who makes me cry, I guess, is between me and my therapist. If you are part of Tim's "tribe" (similarly-minded folks) this will hit every note, tickle your funny bone and tug at the heartstrings. The band rocks and is just the right size, and Tim is adorable, even when pushing a broom. (Trying not to put spoilers.) And he looks damn good for being late 40s. Damn good. DAMN good. (More talk with the therapist about me and younger guys. Ha ha.)
Plus, the dude can really sing.
