The Muppets Mayhem (2023)
The best thing to happen to the Muppets in a long time
This is a near perfect tribute to the Electric Mayhem and the Muppets. After a lot of lackluster attempts to bring the Muppets to the tv and theater, this one knocked it out of the park. There are a lot of throwbacks that any Muppet fan from the better days (aka the originals to the 90s) will love the references, some great jokes and sentimental moments that will have you laughing and/or crying, or both even, and a storyline that just works so well. The actors all did a great job portraying their characters and, even though "Can You Picture That" didn't sound like it did back in the original Muppets movie, it still rocked like usual. I would highly recommend this show to any Muppet fan and any potential Muppet fan. Adam Goldberg and Jeff Yorkes did a fantastic job with this show and I hope we get more of this and/or more shows/movies like this.
How I Met Your Father (2022)
Tried but failed
This show gets some credit for using the iconic theme song from HIMYM but it doesn't get much better than that. I'm honestly very curious what the other pilots were like if this one was as uninteresting as it was. I feel like Greta Gerwig would have been a far better choice.
Episode 1 gave us lots of characters but without any character really. They pulled a Ted/Victoria move with sending Ian out of country but without all the buildup that Ted and Victoria had. There's zero reason to feel any emotion for her. And the fact that we already know that the father was in the first episode kills any suspense really. Sure, we don't know if it's Jesse. It could be Charlie for all we know. But it limits who it could be. But then again I feel like the probably did that so that they could have a failsafe when the show flops and ends after 1-2 seasons.
The second episode was somewhat of a combination of the episode where Robin is the VIP at a club and can't get back in after taking a phone call and the one where they go clubbing with Barney's dad with all the crazy names. You can see they're pulling ideas from HIMYM but they're failing miserably at executing them. The characters are as uninteresting as the stories, or lack of stories, that they have. Maybe it'll get better but I have little hope for it.
