The only thing to root for in this is the safe return of the boy, which, despite all the grim signs, actually happens.
Other than that it's a bizarre landscape populated by a bunch of detestable personalities. Cumberbatch is as skillful as always.
But the plot, a liberal mess that promotes saving all the "unhoused" and devotes half of the series' running time to a gay coming out story, treats all of its players as horrible people. Even the hallucinatory puppet companion is a foul mouthed jerk. Which I guess shouldn't be surprising since he's borne out of Cumberbatch's nasty character's imagination. The spouse is a shrew, the coworkers are either unsympathetic jerks, or sex traffickers. Not kidding.
The only (slightly) redeeming character is the homeless dude who kidnapped the kid. Wait, what?
