Promising Practices in Timiskaming First Nation
Tagline: Addressing Hepatitis C, Community Readiness in Action.
Completed in the spring of 2017, this 28 minute documentary focuses on tackling Hepatitis C with culturally appropriate practices, as Indigenous People in Canada are 7 times more likely to be infected and 44 percent of those chronically infected, are not aware of their status. Injection drug use remains the highest risk factor for contracting this blood to blood virus.
Timiskaming First Nation (TFN) has utilized the Community Readiness Model and reduced the risk for contracting Hepatitis C amongst people who are using drugs or engaging in risky behaviors, and increased the number of people getting tested and onto treatment.
This film includes interviews with community leaders, health care professionals, those who have been infected by the virus and their families, for an intimate human perspective of this healing journey.
