- Katrin Holstrum seeks the help of Congressman Glen Morley just when she needs a governess for her sons Steve and Danny. Morley hires Katy and her solutions contrast with the complicated shapes of the refined Glen.
- A man protests outside the Morley house. He accuses Glen of not being on the side of the people. Soon Agatha and the man develop a friendship, much to Glen's chagrin.
- Katy has her horoscope read when dining with Glen. The teller says Katy and Glen are headed for disaster. The two start fighting and when they make up, Glen tries to propose but it gets foiled. The two still find a way to patch things up.
- While visiting the sites in Washington, Katy meets a handsome man who sweeps her off her feet. Turns out he's the Shah of Iraq, who would rather dance with Katy than meet with a jealous Glen about oil rights.
- Glen's obnoxious Army commander from World War II comes to visit. However, he turns the house upside down when he develops the measles and gives Steve some bad advice for school.

- Katy and the family learn about a famous boxer in town. She and the boxer get to know each other, and her ideas convince him that many a great man has solved problems with peace and not fists.
- Katy feels she's not needed much around the Morley house. She decides to get a job at night at a bookstore. The job is just okay but Glen thinks Katy is trying to spite him, making her more determined not to quit.
- Katy comes to the defense of 3 Latin American men who are protesting their government. When she and Mrs. Morley gets arrested it causes a lot of embarrassment for Glen but teaches him an important lesson.
- A politico becomes a Professor Henry Higgins when he tries to groom Katy for a political position. However, his intentions are less than honorable, and Glen knows it. This makes Katy more determined to become the protege.
- Glen's college friend, a prince from Europe, comes to visit with his young daughter. The prince falls for Katy and asks for her hand. A drunken Glen challenges the prince to a duel in hopes of winning back Katy.
- Katy is the recipient of a citizenship award and a fellow Minnesotan is in town to present it. Meanwhile, Katy brings home a friend, a Russian diplomat. Katy is soon branded Un-American.
- In a dream, senior citizens Glen and Agatha help celebrate Katy's 76th birthday. But this is one dream Katy doesn't want to come true - at 76 she's still a spinster.
- Katy's rich Uncle leaves her a castle in his will. An attorney suggests turning the castle into a hotel. Glen says Katy has no idea how to do this which only pushes her further with the idea. This means she will have to leave the Morleys.
- While visiting a park Katy tells off a rich snob. The man is so infatuated with Katy's frankness that he asks her to become his personal assistant. Both Katy and Glen are forced to re-examine their feelings for each other.
- An opportunistic politician puts the squeeze on Glen for a favor, forcing the congressman to play politics. This causes Steve to lose respect for Glen. Now he must find a way to redeem himself.
- Glen faces a disturbance outside his house. An 18-year-old won't stop protesting until Glen considers lowering the voting age. Meanwhile, Katy takes pity on the boy who thinks Katy is the girl for him.
- Katy wants to get closer to Glen and takes the advice of Mrs. Morley. However, she fails at every attempt to improve the relationship. Then Katy and Glen then daydream about what life would be like as a married couple.
