Lazareth is a new thriller that has enticed in an actor who is no stranger to the genre in Ashley Judd, and to mark the release of the film, we had the pleasure in speaking to her, alongside her younger co-star Asher Angel.
We discuss the themes of the film, and the empowering feminist undercurrent, as well as how it connects to the pandemic, while Judd speaks very candidly about offering advice and guidance to the younger actresses on set, something she goes on to tell she didn’t receive herself. We also speak to Angel about his role in the DC Universe in Shazam!, and he speaks about balancing his film with his music work, and why a certain Justin Timberlake remains an inspiration. Be sure to watch both interviews in their entirety below.

Twenty-five years ago, director Stephen Sommers turned a respected, but admittedly pretty dusty, Universal horror movie into a rip-roarin’ adventure. It’s fair to say all these years later that 1999’s The Mummy the best Indiana Jones movie not directed by Steven Spielberg. And yet, when Universal wanted to remake it again, they didn’t even bother to consult Sommers.
Is it any wonder, then, that 2017’s The Mummy was a colossal flop?
Talking with Sommers about the 25th anniversary of The Mummy ’99, The Hollywood Reporter asked if he had any involvement with the 2017 film, to which the director gave a short, clear response.
“No,” he answered. “Actually, I was kind of insulted because the writers and director of that Tom Cruise one, no one ever contacted me. I contact people if I was going to take over somebody’s thing.”
Perhaps the most surprising part of that statement is...

Teens and hormones. Together, they’re responsible for the realization of any number of worst-case scenarios. Once activated, however, they’re the perfect catalyst for drama in all its permutations, up to and including writer-director Alec Tibaldi’s latest film, Lazareth (a Biblically inspired portmanteau of “Lazarus” and “Nazareth”), an efficient, economical, if somewhat predictable, survival thriller set in a post-pandemic, apocalyptic future. It’s those same pesky hormones that throw a relatively stable household into disarray, conflict, and eventually violence. Lazareth’s main selling point, Ashley Judd, essays the singularly named Lee, a single woman who unofficially adopts her two nieces, Imogen (Katie Douglas) and Maeve (Sarah Pidgeon), just as the outside world goes to the obligatory...

2023 was a rough year for superhero movies. Both Marvel Studios and Warner Bros.' Dceu struggled to deliver movies which resonated with fans and filmgoers, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods failed to take flight when it opened last March.
Reviews were split rather than outright negative, but the movie still only grossed $134 million worldwide. It came as a shock after the success of 2019's Shazam!, and the character's future is now uncertain with DC Studios set to reboot the Dcu beginning with 2025's Superman.
We were recently fortunate enough to speak with Billy Batson actor Asher Angel about his role in the edge-of-your-seat thriller, Lazareth. We'll bring you the full conversation with him, and co-star Ashley Judd, soon.
In the meantime, we have an excerpt from our conversation in which Angel addresses the Shazam! sequel's struggles, his interest in reprising the role, what was originally planned for the franchise,...

To quote Space Ghost himself, "I'll be dead long before you were born, and I'll be dead long before you'll be dead."
In 1994, producer Mike Lazzo donned a pith helmet, filled his arms with machetes, and trekked into the darkest corners of the bleak, terrifying Hanna-Barbera cartoon library. In the depths, he re-discovered a long-forgotten, one-season animated series from 1966 called "Space Ghost," a superhero show about a white-clad, cape-wearing starship captain who fought bud-like villains in the inky void of the cosmos. Space Ghost, voiced by Gary Owens, could pass through walls and oversaw a pair of sidekicks named Jan (Ginny Tyler) and Jace (Tim Matheson) as well as a chimp named Blip (Don Messick).
Like most of Hanna-Barbera's output, "Space Ghost" was strange and awful. 20 years later, reruns of shows like "Space Ghost" were increasingly enjoyed exclusively by college students under the influence of potent smokables. One would be...

Ashley Judd has said that the overturning of Harvey Weinstein’s rape conviction by New York Court of Appeals on Thursday was “institutional betrayal”.
“This today is an act of institutional betrayal,” Judd told a press conference of the 4-3 majority ruling by the court. “And our institutions betrayed survivors of male sexual violence.”
Judd, one of the first women to speak out against alleged sexual harassment by Weinstein in 2017, was in New York advocating at the United Nations in favour of eliminating all forms of harassment and male sexual violence in the world of work.

Surprise reversal of producer’s New York conviction led to anger from stars and accusers, including Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino
Hollywood has reacted with shock to the news that the disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein’s rape conviction has been overturned by a New York court.
The fallen movie mogul was sentenced to 23 years in 2020 for two sex crimes, a decision that a court of appeals has now called the result of an unfair trial.

In a stunning twist to the landmark #MeToo case, the New York state Court of Appeals has overturned Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction.
The highest court in New York state’s judicial system ruled on Thursday that the judge in the New York County trial prejudiced Weinstein with improper rulings, including allowing women to testify about allegations that were not part of the case.
The decision orders a new trial take place.
“Under our system of justice, the accused has a right to be held to account only for the crime charged and, thus, allegations of prior bad acts may not be admitted against them for the sole purpose of establishing their propensity for criminality. Nor may the prosecution use ‘prior convictions or proof of the prior commission of specific, criminal, vicious or immoral acts’ other than to impeach the accused’s credibility,” wrote Judge Jenny Rivera in her ruling.

Ashley Judd is honoring her late mother, Naomi Judd nearly two years after she took her own life. More so, she is doing this through mental health work and advocacy. So, what exactly is Ashley doing to keep her mother’s memory alive? Keep reading for more details.
Ashley Judd Honors Mom, Naomi With Mental Health Work
It seems like only yesterday that country icon Naomi Judd took her own life after a long mental health battle. She was getting ready to set out on tour with her daughter, Wynonna Judd for the first time in a decade. They had performed as The Judds for quite some time and fans adored them. Aside from the tragic way that Naomi died, a self-inflicted gunshot wound, her younger daughter, Ashley Judd was the one who found her. This was clearly traumatic for Ashley but it did bring her and Wynonna closer together.

Twenty years ago this month, the fairy tale-like romantic comedy “13 Going on 30” starring Jennifer Garner made its way into cinemas. The actress played Jenna Rink, a socially awkward soon-to-be 13-year-old who quickly realizes that she “hates being 13.” She makes a birthday wish to be “thirty, flirty and thriving.” With the little help of some wishing dust, she wakes up the next morning to discover that her wish has come true.
It was a defining moment in Garner’s early career. Her role as Sydney Bristow in the television action thriller series “Alias” had made her a breakout star (including at awards shows) just a few years earlier. She won the Golden Globe for Best Drama Actress in 2002 and had competed again in 2003 and earlier in 2004. She had also been nominated for two Emmy Awards one Screen Actors Guild trophy.

Singer Wynonna Judd‘s daughter, Grace Kelley, believes her mom blocked her phone number after Kelley was arrested for indecent exposure.
Kelley, 27, was spotted on the side of a busy highway in Millbrook, Alabama, holding a sign that read, “Ride for a ride.” According to police chief P.K. Johnson, Kelley was flashing her body parts, leading to police arresting her for indecent exposure.
Kelley claims that she was fully clothed and wore a t-shirt and skirt. When police approached her, Kelley said she gave them all the necessary information. As Kelley walked away from the scene, police allegedly told Kelley to “get on her knees.”
Kelley was initially arrested for obstruction of governmental operation and indecent exposure before a soliciting prostitution charge was added on. According to officers, Kelley had also entered a Circle K on the same day, claiming she was robbed and “caused a disturbance with some of the customers.

Zack Snyder loves a director’s cut. Most of his movies have received some manner of alternate cut over the years, but there’s still one project he’d like to make a proper director’s cut of — Sucker Punch.
Sucker Punch didn’t receive the best reviews upon release in 2011, but Snyder told Empire that he’d love to “fix” the movie if given the chance. “The only movie I would change is Sucker Punch, because it never really got finished correctly,” Snyder said. “Even the director’s cut is not really the correct cut. It’s really just an extended version. If I had the chance, I would fix that movie.”
Related Zack Snyder talks about why a director’s cut of Sucker Punch is unlikely
Snyder added that he already has everything he requires to assemble a director’s cut of Sucker Punch; all he needs is permission.

After eight years of Democratic leadership, North Carolina’s next governor could be a guy with a long history of shitposting on Facebook.
Mark Robinson, the winner of the state’s Republican primary for governor on Tuesday, has served as North Carolina’s lieutenant governor since 2021. He shot into the national spotlight in part by devoting himself to Donald Trump and making a slew of incendiary, deeply bigoted comments. In John Carpenter’s horror classic The Thing, R.J. MacReady (Kurt Russell) somberly explains to his tape recorder, “Nobody trusts anybody now, and we’re all very tired.” The now iconic quote summarizes the exhaustive state of sustained paranoia induced by the shape-shifting, extraterrestrial threat that has infiltrated the ranks of an isolated Antarctic research station, seamlessly assuming the identities of its inhabitants.
Isolation, mistrust, and intense paranoia drive Carpenter’s classic 1982 horror movie, heightening the effectiveness of the horror to a tangible degree; and it’s far from the only horror movie to effectively wield paranoia like a sharp blade. Charlize Theron’s 2002 critically panned thriller, Trapped, finds new popularity on Netflix’s Top 10
Sometimes, movies that fail to make a splash when they’re initially released find a new audience later in life. It isn’t unheard of that a movie that flopped and exhibited a low critical response can gain a cult following or even newfound popularity. John Carpenter’s career is kind of filled with movies like this. The early 2000s had seen a slew of mid-budget thrillers in an era before mega-budget franchises took over cinemas. One of those films is a 2002 psychological thriller titled Trapped.
Trapped would seemingly get lost in a sea of movies like Along Came a Spider or Enough, as well as similar crime-thriller genre movies made popular by Ashley Judd with films like Double Jeopardy, High Crimes and Twisted. According to ScreenRant, the Charlize Theron and Kevin Bacon film has found new popularity when it cracked Netflix’s Top 10 Movies along with new movies like The Equalizer 3,...

The "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "The Game" begins with Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) on vacation on Risa, having enjoyed a wild sexual fling with a woman named Etana (Katherine Moffat). The opening scene depicts Riker and Etana prancing about a hotel room, giggling in post-coital bliss. During their play, Etana introduces Riker to a V.R.-style video game that latches over his ears and beams images directly into his eyeballs. Before Zack Snyder turned his sights to the DC Universe, he gave us Sucker Punch, a psychological fantasy action movie that was his first film based on an original concept. While the film was a box office and critical disappointment, it has developed a cult following over the years who have grown to appreciate the over-the-top fantasy, but Snyder believes he didn’t go far enough.
“Sucker Punch is probably the most obvious example of straightforward, pure satire that I’ve made,” Zack Snyder told Total Film. “And I still think I didn’t go far enough, because a lot of people thought that it was just a movie about scantily clad girls dancing around in a brothel. I’m like, ‘Really? Did you see Watchmen? That film is completely a superhero deconstruction from the drop, which is all Alan Moore. That’s the thing I’ve found really interesting and motivating throughout my career.

NBC’s The Voice Season 24 features country superstar Wynonna Judd as the Mega Mentor during Knockout week. We love seeing Judd in the spotlight, as she’s an icon — and she’ll certainly help her friend, Reba McEntire, with the upcoming weeks. Unfortunately, Judd’s daughter, Grace Kelley, was in jail in 2023 after being released from prison in 2022. Here’s why.
Why was Wynonna Judd’s daughter, Grace Kelley, in jail in 2023?
Wynonna Judd’s daughter, Grace Kelley, is known for her legal troubles. She was arrested in June 2016 and charged in 2017 for methamphetamine manufacture, delivery, sale, and possession with intent. At the time, she was sentenced to 11 months in jail, but the sentence was suspended. She then could serve the sentence on probation after spending 30 days in jail. By June 2017, she continued the sentence at a court-ordered drug recovery program. However, by 2018, she was sentenced to eight years at...

Divergent author Veronica Roth is opening up about the film adaptation of her book series and the final film that never got made.
In a new interview, Roth says she was at “peace” with the fourth film of The Divergent Series getting scrapped. Lionsgate split Roth’s third book into two films for a grand finale to the franchise titling it Ascendent, but the film never saw the light of day.

On Monday afternoon, Ashley Judd took the stage at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York. There, the global goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Fund revealed the ways in which previous instances of speaking candidly about sexually violent men have yielded consequences that could have prevented her from being there.

“Male sexual violence is the up with which we will not put, and, for me, it’s just the hill on which I’m willing to die,” Judd said. “I’ve seen too much agony, too many shattered souls, and too many women controlled and held back as farmers, as civil servants, as contributors to their community because they couldn’t plan and space the births of their children because when they introduce family planning they get beaten, or used for household labor and fetching water and cooking and cleaning while their sons eat more than they do.”

Natalie Portman is weighing on the “reductive” concept of a female gaze onscreen.
Portman, who leads Todd Haynes’ “May December,” told Vanity Fair France (via Variety) that the gender of a filmmaker shouldn’t relate to their movie.
“Female directors should have the same opportunities as their male counterparts,” Portman said. “But the experience of working with a director has to do with the individual and it doesn’t relate to gender.”
The Academy Award winner added that “to say that a female director has a particular gaze is reductive of women’s individuality and points of view.”
She continued that “May December” helmer Haynes, for example, “has an in-depth understanding of human behavior. His female characters are complex and multidimensional.”
Earlier this year, Portman reflected on the legacy of the Time’s Up movement in Hollywood, of which she was a founding member. The organization and social campaign addressed sexual harassment in the workplace,...

For the director who gave cinema the ultimate car chase in “The French Connection,” William Friedkin was remarkably at ease with films set in a single room, bringing several plays to the screen over the course of his career. The director — who died August 7 at age 87 — will have his final film screened out of competition in the Venice Film Festival next month, fittingly an adaptation of Herman Wouk’s play “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial.”
Friedkin made his name (and won an Oscar) for “The French Connection,” followed immediately by the instantly iconic “The Exorcist,” but he never lost an abiding interest in live performance, even directing operas off and on for the last 25 years.
In fact, Friedkin was so taken with the 2004 Off-Broadway premiere of Tracy Letts’ play “Bug” that he phoned Letts directly to say he’d like to adapt it into a film — with star Michael Shannon. In one fell swoop,...

Director William Friedkin, best known for his Oscar-winning “The French Connection” and blockbuster “The Exorcist,” died Monday in Los Angeles. He was 87.
His death was confirmed by Chapman University dean Stephen Galloway, a friend of Friedkin’s wife Sherry Lansing.
His final film, “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial,” starring Kiefer Sutherland, is set to premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
Along with Peter Bogdanovich, Francis Ford Coppola and Hal Ashby, Friedkin rose to A-list status in the 1970s, part of a new generation of vibrant, risk-taking filmmakers. “I remember seeing a film that became really formative for me called ‘Ruby in Paradise.’ It was a film about a young woman finding herself. It’s a simple film. A beautiful film. And I thought, ‘Wow. I didn’t know a film could be like this.’ I’d never seen anything like this before.”
That was director Ava DuVernay in the documentary “Only in Theaters” talking about “Ruby in Paradise,” winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival and one of several exquisitely crafted dramas from Florida writer-director Victor Nunez.
