Late in the highly entertaining and enlightening new HBO Documentary Films movie on the life and career of Faye Dunaway we learn how much this iconic star just loves coming to the Cannes Film Festival. “Just about every year,” she says — not only for the world’s best films but also to immerse herself in all aspects of filmmaking. I have seen her many times just soaking it all up cinematically both here in Cannes and Telluride, to name two fests.
So it seems appropriate that the Cannes Classics section would be the place for the World Premiere Wednesday night — in the presence of Dunaway as the French like to call it — of this terrific new docu in which Dunaway pretty much tells it all straight about her life, loves, desires, ambitions, movies, co-stars, depression, controversies, family and hopes for the future in a profession she says she can’t imagine not working in.

MGM celebrated its centennial on April 17th. Marcus Lowe established the studio by merging Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures and Louis B. Mayer Pictures. Boasting it had “more stars than there are in heaven,” MGM may have been the biggest studio during the Golden Age of Hollywood, it has gone through many owners and regimes over the years but seems to on terra firma since Amazon acquired MGM in 2021. In fact, Amazon MGM Studios won best screenplay Oscar for “American Fiction.” And speaking of Academy Awards, MGM has earned numerous statuettes over the years. Here’s a look at five Best Picture winners produced between 1929-1958.

Fritz Wepper, a German actor with a prolific TV career in his native country but known to American audiences for his funny and heartfelt performance as a German Jew is Bob Fosse’s Oscar-winning 1972 hit musical Cabaret, died Monday at a hospice facility in Munich. He was 82.
His death was announced by wife Susanne Kellermann to German newspaper Bild. Kellerman said Wepper passed away peacefully following a long illness.
A familiar presence in Germany from his role as the crime-solving Detective Sergeant Harry Klein in the long-running series Derrick (1974-98), Wepper made a lasting impression on international audiences with his performance as the charming, if insecure, aspiring gigolo Fritz Wendel of Cabaret.
In the film starring Liza Minnelli, Michael York and Joel Grey, Wepper’s Fritz befriended Minnelli’s Sally Bowles and York’s Brian Roberts, while longing for the beautiful and wealthy Jewish heiress Natalia Landauer (Marisa Berenson). Secretly Jewish himself,...

This year’s Best Drama Guest Actress category at the Emmys is a tightly-knit affair with only two shows — “Succession” and “The Last of Us,” both HBO projects — reaping nominations. “Succession” landed three bids for Harriet Walter, Hiam Abbass, and Cherry Jones, while “The Last of Us” produced nominations for Melanie Lynskey, Storm Reid, and Anna Torv.

Leslie Caron (Leslie Claire Margaret Caron) is a French-American actor who rose to prominence in the 1950s, appearing in notable musical films like An American in Paris (1951) and Gigi (1958). Interestingly, Caron was 25 when she was cast to play a 14-year-old in MGM’s Gigi and had already given birth to her first child. Nevertheless, she did justice to the role, scoring a Laurel Award for Top Female Musical Performance and a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical. As Kenneth Branagh brings his third Hercule Poirot film to theaters with “A Haunting in Venice,” fans of the Agatha Christie character might debate: Who is the best actor to ever play the mustachioed Belgian detective? And which versions simply didn’t work?
We’ve compiled a list of the most notable actors to portray the famously fussy sleuth —from Tony Randall to PBS favorite David Suchet — and ranked them with both how true they are to Christie’s vision and how enjoyable their portrayal is to audience.

7. Tony Randall (1965)
The “Odd Couple” actor’s one outing as the detective in the Frank Tashlin-directed film “The Alphabet Murders” leans very hard into comedy. The result: Despite the mustache and bald cap and an occasionally passable accent, we get very little of “the little grey cells” character we expect and far more sight gigs and slapstick.

(Welcome to Did They Get It Right?, a series where we look at an Oscars category from yesteryear and examine whether the Academy's winner stands the test of time.)
Every year, one or several films racks up an impressive haul of nominations. 14 is currently the record, shared amongst "All About Eve," "La La Land," and "Titanic," but routinely, you'll see eight, nine, or double-digit nominations for movies. This past year, "Everything Everywhere All at Once" had 11, while "All Quiet on the Western Front" and "The Banshees of Inisherin" managed nine apiece.
Most of the time, however, the Academy likes to spread the wealth. Take last year's movies. Even with "Everything Everywhere" doing abnormally well, it only won seven of those 11. "All Quiet" just won four, and "Banshees" went home empty-handed. A nomination domination does not necessarily set you up to do a massive clean sweep of the Oscars. Even "Titanic,...

Motion pictures, for better or worse, shape the way that we view history. They bring the past to life using realistic costumes, production design, and visual effects. They tell vivid stories about real-life figures and important events that shaped the world around us to this day, and which provide meaningful parallels to the lives we currently lead.
And yet, if the movies have taught us anything, it's that every single historical figure, at some point in their storied life, has also solved at least one murder mystery. Or at least they fought a mummy or something. The desire to tell tales of historical fiction is perfectly understandable, but our collective and very specific urge to transform biographies into pulpy fan fiction is a little weird, if you think about it.
Consider, if you will, Scott Cooper's "The Pale Blue Eye," which co-stars Harry Melling as a young Edgar Allan Poe,...

Global film greats flocked to the festival because of its dedication to the art – and because they know great pictures are nothing without great picturehouses
I remember the shock when Alfred Hitchcock died. For film fans in Edinburgh, Scotland and further afield, Thursday was a similar body blow. The city’s great cultural cinema, Filmhouse, and its august Edinburgh international film festival have both ceased trading.
Martin Scorsese, Maggie Cheung, the Coen Brothers, Andrei Tarkovsky, Lynne Ramsay, Leslie Caron, Steve Martin, Bill Forsyth, Derek Jarman, Thelma Schoonmaker, Michael Powell and many others went to Filmhouse like moths to a flame, seeking what I sought when I first went in 1984: a place to come out as movie lover. An exhilaration, and a harbour in which to shelter and from which to sail.

The rules of survival in Hollywood have always fascinated me. “Consistency is the key – always present yourself to studios as a total bitch,” Bette Davis once confided. “Never delude yourself into thinking that a star can become a loyal personal friend,” advised Billy Wilder. “Since studios always lie, a producer’s mandate is to come up with bigger lies,” said David O. Selznick.

Nearly two decades into her stand-up comedy career, Martha Kelly ventured into acting by taking on the role of Martha Brooks on the FX comedy series “Baskets.” In the half dozen years since her debut, she has carved out a niche playing perpetually soft-spoken, outwardly joyless characters on such sitcoms as “Will & Grace,” “Grace and Frankie,” and “Hacks.” She has also applied her notoriously deadpan performing style to a few dramatic parts, including the one for which she just received her first Emmy nomination: Laurie on HBO’s “Euphoria.”

On March 20, 1952, two black and white dramas came into the Oscar ceremony vying for the win. Both “A Streetcar Named Desire” and “A Place in the Sun” had everything the Academy loves: drama, an ensemble of well-known actors and directors – many of whom had previous nominations and wins – and loads of nominations. By the time the Best Picture was to be announced, each had picked up major wins – “Streetcar” had claimed three of the four acting wins, while “Sun” had picked up statues for directing, cinematography and editing. So, it was a “what the heck??” Oscar moment when the final big prize was shockingly announced: the romantic musical “An American in Paris.”

Laughlin’s death was confirmed to Variety by his friend Brooke Nasser. He died in Honolulu, Hawaii, where had been living for many years.
Laughlin was born and raised in Illinois. He was recruited to play basketball at Stanford University and graduated from Principia College in 1960.
After moving to London, Laughlin began a career as a film producer, working on projects such as Bryan Forbes’ 1967 thriller “The Whispers” and the 1968 feature “Joanna,” director Michael Sarne’s precursor to “Myra Breckinridge.” He met and married French actress and ballerina Leslie Caron during his time abroad. The two separated in 1975.

Mckenna Grace remains perched atop the Best Drama Guest Actress Emmy odds for “The Handmaid’s Tale” after knocking down her co-star Alexis Bledel. A win for either would be a win for “Handmaid’s,” but if it is indeed Grace who pulls it out, the Hulu drama would accomplished something only one show has done.
Should Grace prevail, that would mark “Handmaid’s” fourth win in the category for a fourth different actress following awards for Bledel (2017), Samira Wiley (2018) and Cherry Jones (2019). “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” is the only series thus far to have yielded four wins for four actresses — and it actually did it five times for five actresses: Amanda Plummer (2005), Leslie Caron (2007), Cynthia Nixon (2008), Ellen Burstyn (2009) and Ann-Margret (2010). Those five wins are a category record, so “Handmaid’s” would be one shy if it scores a victory in September.

Outside of production design, which it was on four times, “The Handmaid’s Tale” has ruled one other Emmy category: Best Drama Guest Actress. A three-time champ there, it could add a fourth award this year to put it one shy of the most wins in the category.
The Hulu drama won guest actress three years in a row from 2017-19 for Alexis Bledel, Samira Wiley and Cherry Jones. It’s currently tied at three victories with “The Practice,” which won for Beah Richards (2000), Alfre Woodard (2003) and Sharon Stone (2004). Only “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” has won more — the long-running procedural, which may never end at this point, holds the record with five wins, including four in a row: Amanda Plummer (2005), Leslie Caron (2007), Cynthia Nixon (2008), Ellen Burstyn (2009) and Ann-Margret (2010). The legendary actor reflects on her riches-to-rags childhood, confronting depression and alcoholism – and dancing with Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire
Leslie Caron and her companion, Jack, greet me at the front of their apartment. They make a well-matched couple – slight, chic, immaculately coiffured. Caron, the legendary dancer and actor, is 90 in two weeks’ time. Jack, her beloved shih tzu, is about nine.
Caron heads off to make the tea, with Sidney Bechet’s summery jazz playing in the background. I am left alone with Jack to explore the living room. It feels as if I am tunnelling through the history of 20th-century culture. Here is a photo of a pensive François Truffaut; below is a smirking Warren Beatty. The centrepiece on the wall is a huge watercolour of Caron’s great friend Christopher Isherwood, painted by his partner, Don Bachardy. To the left is Louis Armstrong, to the right Rudolf Nureyev,...

Now in its third and final season, Netflix hit comedy The Kominsky Method sees Michael Douglas resume his role as acting teacher Sandy Kominsky, only this time Sandy is without his best friend, king of the sardonic aside, Norman Newlander, played by Alan Arkin. Douglas says it was “delicate doing without Alan for this season”, but that Arkin “did a lot without showing up”, as Norman seems to orchestrate the action even after his departure. With over 40 years of industry experience, both acting and producing—his first foray into the latter being One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest in 1975—Douglas is currently relishing work on another installment in the Ant-Man franchise. Here, he muses on his career memories and recalls some film and TV favorites.

In quintessential Logan Roy fashion, the HBO series “Succession” absolutely dominated Emmy nominations in terms of acting recognition. After an across-the-board snub by the acting branch last year, the Roy family came roaring back with an impressive nine acting bids, over-performing our own high expectations. In addition to the blindside of Cousin Greg (Nicholas Braun) sneaking into the competitive Supporting Actor category, “Succession” also picked up an unexpected nomination for Harriet Walter, who only 222 of our users correctly predicted––this author included.
Though Walter’s nomination indicates just how much the acting branch loved and paid close attention to the second season of the series, her surprise appearance in the category could potentially stymie a “Succession” victory in the Guest Actress category, where two-time Emmy-winner Cherry Jones also competes for her “Succession” turn as media mogul Nan Pierce. Might the surprise, second nomination in this category actually cost “Succession” some Emmy gold?...

“Praise be” to great guest stars! Amazingly, “The Handmaid’s Tale” has gone three-for-three at the Emmys in Best Drama Guest Actress, winning for Alexis Bledel (2017), Samira Wiley (2018) and Cherry Jones (2019). A fourth triumph would tie Hulu’s post-apocalyptic series with “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” which won a record four years in a row for Leslie Caron (2007), Cynthia Nixon (2008), Ellen Burstyn (2009) and Ann-Margret (2010), not counting its first category trophy for Amanda Plummer (2005). Can “Handmaid’s” keep up its wild winning streak this year with standout guest stars Julie Dretzin or Clea Duvall?
Dretzin plays Eleanor Lawrence, the unstable wife of Joseph (Bradley Whitford). She appeared in 6/13 episodes in Season 3, which means she just made the “less than 50%” cutoff required for guest star eligibility. The recognizable character actress has yet to be nominated for a major industry award, despite regularly working in Hollywood for three decades.

At last year’s Creative Arts Emmys, Cherry Jones won Best Drama Guest Actress for her role on “The Handmaid’s Tale,” making it three in a row for Hulu’s post-apocalyptic series after Alexis Bledel (2017) and Samira Wiley (2018). One more consecutive victory in this category would tie “Handmaid’s” with “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” NBC’s long-running procedural drama that won a record four years in succession for Leslie Caron (2007), Cynthia Nixon (2008), Ellen Burstyn (2009) and Ann-Margret (2010). “Svu” took home an additional guest actress trophy, though not consecutively, for Amanda Plummer (2005).
The only other series to come close to matching “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Law & Order: Svu” in Best Drama Guest Actress is “The Practice.” ABC’s legal drama prevailed for Beah Richards (2000), Alfre Woodard (2003) and Sharon Stone (2004), though again, those three were not all in a row. Do you think “Handmaid’s” will triumph in this category at the upcoming 2020 Emmys?...

Sultry music swells as the camera swoons over a young couple in a tender nighttime embrace. The 1950s residential New York City street is carefully rain-slicked and lined with shiny classic cars: an obvious stage set. Gene Kelly might just have swung on that lamppost; Doris Day might lean out of an upstairs window to sigh at a painted moon. But the canoodling stars of Eugene Ashe’s Sundance competition title “Sylvia’s Love” are black, which is among the sole indications that this weightlessly glossy yet undeniably charming romance is a product of the 21st century. Even so, were we to find out as the credits roll that the film had actually lain undiscovered in some studio vault for five decades, aside from mild surprise that it would make Tessa Thompson quite a bit older than previously suspected, it would actually explain a lot.

One of the more surprising wins at Sunday’s Creative Arts Emmy Awards was the very last one: Cherry Jones took home Best Drama Guest Actress for “The Handmaid’s Tale” over odds-on favorite Phylicia Rashad (“This Is Us”), putting the Hulu series in rarefied air as one of two shows to three-peat in the category.
Jones’ victory follows those of Alexis Bledel (2017) and Samira Wiley (2018), which means “Handmaid’s” has never lost this category. The only other show to carry on such a streak was “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” which claimed four consecutive wins from 2007-10 for Leslie Caron, Cynthia Nixon, Ellen Burstyn and Ann-Margret. Add on Amanda Plummer‘s triumph in 2005 for “Svu” and the procedural — set to become TV’s longest-running live-action series with its 21st season premiere next week — holds the category record for most wins at five.

Cherry Jones is the early favorite to win Best Drama Guest Actress for “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and if she does walk away with the award, it would put the show in rarefied air: “Handmaid’s” would be just the second series to three-peat in the category.
The Hulu dystopian drama has won drama guest actress the past two years for Alexis Bledel (2017) and Samira Wiley (2018). “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” is the only series to win three in a row — and it actually won four in a row from 2007-10 for Leslie Caron, Cynthia Nixon, Ellen Burstyn and Ann-Margret. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors will meet early Saturday to select their choices for the 11th annual Governors Awards. The special meeting is three months earlier than the usual post-Telluride Labor Day weekend date because the Academy — along with the rest of its accelerated calendar — has moved up the date for the Governors Awards from November 16 to Sunday, October 27. The nearly three-week jump backward reflects a similar shift for the February 9, 2020 Oscars.
The Governors’ Ball is a non-televised awards program that always draws a sizable contingent of Oscar contenders to the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood and Highland to celebrate the honorary Oscar winners as well as the occasional Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and Irving J. Thalberg Memorial Awards.
The changed date comes partly because outgoing AMPAS president John Bailey (the board will elect his successor in August) wanted a hand in the selection.

Law & Order: SVU and its star Mariska Hargitay have cemented their places in television history. NBC has renewed Dick Wolf’s series for a record-setting 21st season, making it TV’s longest-running primetime live-action series, surpassing the previous mark of 20 seasons set by mothership series Law & Order (1990-2010) and Gunsmoke (1955-75).
The renewal also marks a milestone for Hargitay’s Lt. Benson as the longest-running character in a primetime live-action series. Hargitay surpassed Gunsmoke‘s James Arness and Milburn Stone as well as Kelsey Grammer who have all portrayed the same character for 20 consecutive seasons..

Keeley Hawes has cornered the market in playing complex characters, but off-screen is there a role for life’s simpler pleasures? She talks to Rebecca Nicholson about the joys of TV, meeting her husband on set – and caravanning with Emma Bunton
A couple of months ago, Keeley Hawes was in the Wolseley on London’s Piccadilly, about to have lunch, when she saw a familiar face across the room. She was meeting her husband, the actor Matthew Macfadyen. “I went, ‘My God, it’s Amber Rudd,’” she whispers. In the television juggernaut that was BBC One’s Bodyguard, Hawes was Julia Montague, the ill-fated home secretary who took no nonsense, though she took a shine to her security detail, played by Richard Madden. She had researched Rudd for the role, and the similarities did not go unnoticed. But the pair were yet to meet.
