Iconic directors named David haven’t been having the best luck with the Netflix streaming service lately. David Lynch recently revealed that Snootworld, an animated movie he hopes to make, had been rejected by Netflix, and now David Cronenberg has said that his new film The Shrouds – which just made its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival (you can read some of the first reactions Here) – was originally intended to be a Netflix TV series, but the streamer dropped it after paying him to write the pilot episode.
During a press conference at Cannes, Cronenberg said (according to The Hollywood Reporter) that he “envisioned the story working well as a series. He flew to Los Angeles to speak with two Netflix execs who financed the writing of a first episode – which they loved. But after the second, they did not want to go any further.” Cronenberg went on to say,...

Vincent Cassel and David Cronenberg are getting the band back together for The Shrouds, a disturbing meditation about grief, making peace with death, and watching your loved ones decompose in real time. Yeah, you heard me. The Shrouds teaser trailer offers a brief glimpse at Cronenberg’s next mind-bending thriller and the filmmaker’s first project with Cassel since teaming up for Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method. According to Cronenberg, The Shrouds is a personal project for him, with parts of the story being autobiographical.
In The Shrouds, Vincent Cassell takes on the role of Karsh, “an innovative businessman and grieving widower, who builds a novel device to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud. This burial tool installed at his own state-of-the-art though controversial cemetery allows him and his clients to watch their specific departed loved one decompose in real time. [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the NCIS Season 21 premiere “Algún Día.”] Is Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) a murderer? Well, as NCIS shows us in the Season 21 premiere, he would be somewhat justified, given that the man who ends up dead, Maurice Riva (Al Sapienza), made his and his family’s lives a nightmare when they were growing up. But as the episode goes on, it becomes clear that he’s not the one responsible, though he’s protecting the person he thinks is his sister. After all, “someday” was what they’d said as kids … which is why he doesn’t even want her to be his lawyer. And so that’s why TV Insider had to bring in Wilmer Valderrama for our first weekly NCIS aftershow for the CBS drama, NCIS: Case Closed, with our Kate Hahn. “I had this crazy idea that we should send Torres to prison,” Valderrama reveals of the Season 20 finale.

You can’t go wrong with a classic. For the shortened 21st season of NCIS that premieres February 12, “All we wanted to do was get back to doing what we do best, which is tell really great stories,” says David J. North, a longtime NCIS writer who has joined Steven D. Binder as co-showrunner. With only 10 episodes, due to the actors’ and writers’ strikes, each hour is a stand-alone story with smaller character arcs. The opener picks up with the vengeful Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama), last seen in the cliffhanger finale promising to pull the trigger on a man from his childhood who’d devastated his family. “Torres does something to the mystery man, Maurice Riva [Al Sapienza, who played Mikey Palmice on The Sopranos], that threatens to end his career as an NCIS agent,” North reveals. “The team rallies around Torres, but it may be too late to save his badge—and his freedom.

Old buddies “TNT” — that’s NCIS: Hawai‘i boss Jane Tennant (Vanessa Lachey) and brave NCIS agent Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) — each ended their seasons tripped up by someone from their past. Tennant will surely get blowback for the escape of her mentor turned traitor, Maggie Shaw (Julie White), but Torres’ situation was exponentially worse: pointing a gun at a mystery man (Al Sapienza) he’d recognized while undercover in prison and tracked down. To recap, after his secret op, Torres made a chilling call: “I found him, Sis. You know who I’m talking about. The bastard’s still alive.” Maybe not for long. The man, who called Torres “Nicky,” said he thinks about him and his family often, and claimed to have changed. Still, Torres wants to watch him die. (Credit: Karen Neal/CBS) In the Season 21 premiere, “Torres is out for revenge, even if it costs him his career — or worse,...

Gear up for a new season of Amazon’s breakout action hit Reacher, which is based on the popular novels by Lee Child that served as the basis for Tom Cruise’s attempted franchise, Jack Reacher. Although Cruise’s film adaptation was able to capitalize with the sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Prime Video’s Reacher series aimed to stick closer to the novels and presents a new case for each season. For example, major characters from season one, like Roscoe and Oscar Finlay, will not play prominent roles in this season. Prime Video has just released the teaser for tomorrow’s premiere for the trailer to season 2 of the Alan Ritchson-starring drama.
According to ScreenRant, “Reacher season 2 will be based on Child’s book Bad Luck and Trouble, the 11th book in the ongoing series. In the book, Reacher is contacted by someone from his former military unit,...

What’s next for Torres after NCIS’s season-ending cliffhanger? Fans are going to have to wait a while to find out. The long-running series likely won’t return with new episodes on CBS in 2023 due the ongoing SAG-Afrta and WGA strikes.
When will new episodes of ‘NCIS’ air on CBS?
In the NCIS Season 20 finale, Torres (Wilmer Valderamma) had gone deep undercover in an effort to stop a Russian terrorist plot. Thankfully, Torres and the team managed to avert disaster. But at the end of the episode, a figure from his past returned. We don’t know who the man (played by Al Sapienza) is, but his reemergence prompted Torres to call his sister and warn her.
“The bastard’s still alive, and he’s still doing it,” he says. He then breaks into the man’s house and waits for him – with a gun. When he returns home,...

In May, NCIS ended its Season 20 finale, “Black Sky,” with quite the cliffhanger: Special Agent Nick Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) pulling his gun not in an official capacity and seemingly threatening to kill a man. The episode saw him undercover in prison as part of an attempt to get more information about an impending terror attack, but the most intriguing part came when he recognized someone from his past: a man visiting an inmate. That man was the inmate’s mother’s boyfriend, supposedly helping him with his legal problems… but also responsible for making his and his mom’s lives hell since he showed up. It also seemed like Torres believed he framed the inmate. But why? It was once Torres returned to NCIS and left his sister a voicemail that the pieces began to come together. “I found him,” he said. ‘You know who I’m talking about. The...

There’s a scene in Capone when Al Capone, the legendary gangster formerly known as “public enemy number one,” is chasing a group of kids around his Florida mansion. The year is 1946, nearly 11 years after he was sentenced to prison for tax evasion, and now he’s hobbling through corridors, unable to keep up with five-year-old children.
The film, laced with murky dialogue and twists, is a drama about the gangster’s final days. Written and directed by Josh Trank, Capone attempts to combine Herzogian madness with a “Hey, look at me!” leading performance. Tom Hardy does it all as the titular character: growling, drooling, snot, yelling, snotty yelling. He even performs a couple scenes in a pile of his own crap. If his hard work was in service of a better picture, we might be talking about him come Oscar season.
If only. While Capone is a rich character...

More than a dozen actors have tackled the role of infamous Prohibition-era gangster Al Capone, from Neville Brand in The Untouchables TV show (1959-1963) to Robert De Niro in the 1987 movie version of the series. But no one has ever played the Chicago mob boss, a.k.a. Scarface and Public Enemy No. 1, with quite the implosive power of Tom Hardy in Capone (on video on demand starting May 12th). What makes the Oscar-nominated British actor’s take particularly daring is the fact that the plays Capone only in the final year of his life.

I’ve been a big fan of actress Natalie Burn since her role in 2016’s Left to Die (aka Awaken). That film, which she also co-wrote, saw her take the lead role in a Most Dangerous Game-esque movie but be sidelined by the marketing materials who focused on the appearance of Vinnie Jones in the cast. And Acceleration does something very similar.

"The only thing that really matters... is how a man treats his family." Vertical has unveiled the first official trailer for Capone, formerly known as Fonzo, the new Al Capone project from filmmaker Josh Trank (of Chronicle and Fantastic Four). The film finds and follows Alphonse Capone after 10 years in prison, at age 47, when he starts suffering from dementia and comes to be haunted by his violent past. Tom Hardy stars as Capone, struggling with harrowing memories. "As he spends his final year surrounded by family with the FBI lying in wait, this ailing patriarch struggles to place the memory of the location of millions of dollars he hid away on his property." The cast includes Linda Cardellini, Matt Dillon, Kyle MacLachlan, Noel Fisher, Jack Lowden, and Al Sapienza. This reminds me a bit of one of Hardy's other films, Bronson, also about a crazy guy from prison. Al's make-up is seriously sketchy,...

Who is The Flash Season 5 villain? We dig in to the DC Comics history of the Cicada, played by Chris Klein.
This article contains The Flash spoilers.
His arrival has been teased since the first bit of footage for The Flash Season 5 arrived, but the Cicada (played by Chris Klein) has remained a mystery. Even The Flash season 5 premiere, the excellent "Nora," waited until quite literally the last minute of the episode to introduce him. And when they did, it was to dispatch that episode's disposable villain, Gridlock, who won't be missed.
And while the character is definitely a villain from the comics, The Flash season 5 has opted to handle Cicada as an almost completely different character. But like Savitar and The Thinker, he continues the show's tradition of elevating otherwise obscure villains to the prestige role of season big bad. It makes some sense. After all,...
