Hollywood is bursting with "what if" scenarios -- "Sliding Doors" moments where actors, writers, directors, and craftspeople almost made a certain project, or almost walked away from a job that would become huge for their careers. With the benefit of hindsight, these situations are often fun to think about -- especially if, as in the case in today's example, A) the two people competing for a part were vying for a memorable role in a well-known movie, and B) they both went on to have great careers, so the thought exercise doesn't feel mean-spirited or just plain sad.
In an oral history of "Zoolander" published by Vanity Fair in 2021, "Zoolander" writer, producer, director, and star Ben Stiller explained how Owen Wilson nearly didn't end up playing Hansel, Derek Zoolander's rival-male-model-turned-friend, and identified the surprising actor who almost took the role instead:

In spite of almost two decades having passed since the release of the first episode, The Office’s legacy still lives on in the hearts of its fans. One of their most favorite onscreen employees, the charming receptionist Pam Beesly steals the whole romantic line of the sitcom. However, the Pam actress, Jenna Fischer, seems to stay out of the spotlight now.
It may come as a surprise, but over the course of 11 years that have passed since The Office’s conclusion, Fischer has made a number of far cries from the role which made her a star, with some of the projects with our favorite Pam actress being enlisted below.
Her first post-Office role was the one in Owen Wilson and Zach Galifianakis’ dramedy titled Are You Here (2013). This movie was received quite poorly, and the critics were sure it was a shameful waste of the actors’ talents, including Fischer’s comedy potential.

Loki: Hot Toys Unveils "God Loki" Figure, Offering Detailed Look At New Costume From Season 2 Finale
In the closing moments of Loki's season 2 finale, the God of Mischief destroyed the Temporal Loom and created a new, endless Multiverse which he sits at the centre of.
We're sure "God Loki" will eventually return, particularly with Kang gearing up to embark on a Multiversal War and Incursions destroying many of these new realities. While powering up to replace the Loom, Loki's costume underwent a startling transformation, and our best look yet at that comes in the form of a new 1/6th scale Hot Toys action figure.
Two versions will be available; a limited edition with rooted hair, and another with a traditional head sculpt.
"Exquisitely crafted based on the screen appearance of Tom Hiddleston as God Loki in the finale, the figure features a newly developed head sculpt with separate rolling eyeballs," reads the official product description. "The fabric costume has been finely tailored to match Loki's on-screen appearance,...

The first season of “Loki” was the most popular of all the Marvel series to premiere on Disney+, and for good reason: The imaginative world of the Time Variance Authority (Tva) and the core relationships established within it — most notably the warm and hilarious partnership between Tom Hiddleston’s title character and Tva functionary Mobius M. Mobius (Owen Wilson) — yielded one of the liveliest and most involving Marvel screen stories since the original “Iron Man.” But as impressive as Season 1 was, it was only a warm-up for the more ambitious, suspenseful, and poignant Season 2, in which Loki finally fulfills a destiny set up for him 13 years ago in the movie “Thor” — though in a way that neither he nor the audience could possibly have predicted.
The trajectory of Loki’s character from “Thor” to “Loki” Season 2 is about as complex a character arc as one can imagine, ranging from pure...

Tension at the University of California, Los Angeles, continued over the weekend and into Monday when professors protested outside an A-list gala at the school on Saturday night and another several dozen students were detained on Monday, while investigations into the mob that attacked the pro-Palestine encampment on campus last week continued.
Despite the mass arrests and dismantling of an encampment by police in riot gear that took place on Thursday, pro-Palestine protests carried on Monday at the university. A group of demonstrators was seen zip-tied and being moved by authorities from a UCLA parking garage to an Lacpd bus. The number of protester arrests was 43, according to local news reports Ktla, with those taken into custody on suspicion of conspiracy to commit burglary and released after they were processed; all classes have now been moved to remote.

In 2014, Wes Ball made his directorial debut with the dystopian science fiction film The Maze Runner which is based on James Dashner’s novel of the same name. The filmmaker subsequently went on to direct two more films in the franchise which follows the story of a teenager who is thrown into an intricate maze and must find his way out of it.

The central protagonist in the films was played by Dylan O’Brien who impressed with his performance in the trilogy. But the young actor who aptly developed the nuances of his character through the narratives, was initially not considered the perfect choice by Ball owing to a certain preconceived notion that he had of him.

With major franchises such as Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar under its roof, Disney typically finds itself on the top of the box-office heap, but that wasn’t the case last year. The company had more than a few failures which found its fortunes falling, and Deadline reports that four of the five biggest box-office bombs of 2023 belonged to Disney.
First up, and least surprising, is The Marvels, the Captain Marvel sequel starring Brie Larson, Iman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris. As its predecessor grossed $1.1 billion, it was hoped that the sequel would equal that number, but the film turned out to be a bomb of epic proportions, grossing just $206 million worldwide. The film reportedly found Disney taking a loss of $237 million. Yikes.

Owen Wilson may have been in the MCU ever since he joined Loki led by Tom Hiddleston back in 2021, but the actor recently got an offer that most of the Marvel’s stars can’t boast of.
Seemingly a one-in-a-million opportunity that would make him a fortune, the offer was nonetheless quick to be shut down — and the problem here lies in the upcoming movie’s very controversial storyline.
Apart from being one of Hollywood’s biggest actors with a lot of acclaimed works under his belt, Owen Wilson, to his fans’ pure delight, also appears to be a man of his word with solid morality.
As director Joshua Newton has recently revealed, Wilson turned down his generous offer of $12 million to star in Newton’s upcoming crime thriller The Juice. The film will presumably tell the truth about O.J. Simpson’s scandalous arrest following his wife Nicole Brown Simpson’s murder.

A few years ago, filmmakers Emma Schwartz and Mary Robertson remember taking note of video compilations from old Dan Schneider series that showed children and young teens “enacting scenes that are arguably sexual in nature.”
“One example you see Ariana Grande squeezing a potato, or Ariana Grande — who was then a young teenager — pouring water on her chest and face,” Robertson recalls during a panel at Deadline’s Contenders TV: Documentary + Unscripted event. “And you see Jamie Lynn Spears receiving this squirt of a viscous liquid on her face. And there were many on social media who were asking, ‘Did I grow up watching these clips?’ “
Their shock over what they found on social media, together with a story about ’90s kids TV in Business Insider, is what prompted the creation of Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV. The Investigation Discovery docuseries set out to uncover the...

After winning the Emmy earlier this year for the final season of Trevor Noah’s hosting stint, The Daily Show surprised just about everyone with the announcement that its multiple Emmy-winning previous star Jon Stewart would be returning to host Monday editions during this election year, while other regulars would take turns hosting during the rest of the week.
The multi-host format was born out of necessity following Noah’s departure and a series of what were essentially auditions for a permanent replacement. Unable to land on the perfect choice, producers and Comedy Central settled on Stewart returning and spreading the wealth host-wise to carry the series through this election year.
Ratings are up. It’s working.
Discussing the evolution at Deadline’s Contenders TV: Documentary + Unscripted event were longtime executive producer/showrunner/writer Jen Flanz, co-executive producer/writer Zhubin Parang, and former writer and newly named correspondent Josh Johnson.

Casting for Netflix’s reality competition series Squid Game: The Challenge was a unique challenge: finding 456 diverse and international lead characters.
Casting director Erika Dobrin described the gargantuan task by saying, “I don’t think that’s ever quite been done before on the scale it was done here.”
The Netflix series, based on the streaming’s mega-hit Korean survival drama Squid Game, saw 456 contestants compete for a massive $4.56 million prize through a series of challenges. Can you tell who has a “good” voice and who has a “bad” voice just by looking someone in the face who is lip-syncing to a song? This is the question posed to participants weekly on the Fox game show I Can See Your Voice, hosted and created by Ken Jeong.
“The whole show is predicated on, is this a ‘good’ singer or a ‘bad’ singer without ever hearing them actually hearing them sing,” Jeong tells Deadline during a panel at its Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted awards-season event. “We use visual clues, lip-sync clues, and like detective kind of clues. At the end of the day, the contestant has an opportunity to win life-changing money by determining if the final secret voice is good or bad. And if it is good, then they can win up to $100,000. National Geographic’s Queens isn’t your typical nature documentary series.
From the first episode, it flips the script on what one might expect out, instead diving deep into the love, loss and resilience of the matriarchal societies in the animal kingdom. And it all started with that very first story of both lionesses and hyenas detailed in the “African Queens” episode.

Tom Hiddleston’s Loki has been appearing in the speculations & discussions of Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine, ever since Tva was confirmed to be a part of the movie. While Hiddleston mentioned in numerous interviews that his 14-year stint with Marvel came to a worthy conclusion in Loki Season 2, he hasn’t denied the Deadpool 3 rumors anywhere.
With his latest cryptic response to a question at ComFest, a popular theory suggests that he is set to appear in the film as a variant.
Tom Hiddleston may appear in Deadpool & Wolverine as one of his variants
Hiddleston’s Loki Laufeyson may appear as the variant known as Avenger Prime. This variant commands all of the Multiversal Avengers from the God Quarry. It makes a lot of sense for this variant to appear in the film and direct the overall MCU story towards the Multiverse Saga finale.

The Apple TV+ docuseries The Super Models hearkens to the 1990s when four extraordinary beauties ruled the covers of fashion magazines and popular culture: Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista.
“It was a time when music and art and fashion were all coming together. And they were the first influencers … way before there were cell phones or anything,” executive producer and director Roger Ross Williams said during an appearance at Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted event. “They were on the pages of the Daily News and New York Post and the fashion magazines and the gossip magazines. They were everywhere.”
Producer-director Larissa Bills added, “These women, I think, be it their force of personality plus the time, plus the culture, it became a zeitgeist where they were able to own their own image. And I don’t mean that literally because there’s certainly an element...

Ahead of preparing for his latest documentary The Dynasty: New England Patriots, director and executive producer Matthew Hamachek didn’t know much about the NFL team other then its ability to win Super Bowls. However, he quickly found a focus once the interview process revved up.
“Whenever I have written or directed a doc before, one of the things I’m always trying to do is to figure out the central theme or central idea is when we go on this journey, whether it’s over 90 minutes or 10 parts like in this one,” Hamachek said on a panel for the Apple TV+ docuseries at Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted event.

When filmmakers Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss first spoke with friends about the focus of their Apple TV+ documentary Girls State — a companion piece to their Emmy- and Sundance-winning 2020 documentary Boys State — they were surprised to hear about the expectations it conjured in their minds.
Following 500 teenage girls from Missouri as they navigate a weeklong immersion in a sophisticated democratic laboratory where they build a government from the ground up to address the most contentious issues of the day, the film would surely come down, the friends predicted, to mean girls looking, in Moss’ words, “to tear each other apart.”
In reality, in spite of the political polarization that defines the U.S. today, the situation at Missouri Girls State was altogether different.

“I mean, there’s just nothing that can prepare you for the experience of Drag Race, because it is an experience of its own,” Season 16 queen Q said during a panel at Deadline’s Contenders TV: Documentary + Unscripted awards-season event.
After 16 seasons, MTV’s RuPaul’s Drag Race still manages to keep contestants and viewers on their toes — even when they’ve been vying for a spot for years, like Season 16 queen Sapphira Cristál.
“I auditioned for RuPaul’s Drag Race 11 times, and so I had a lot of time to prepare,” she said, explaining that each rejection only made her want it more. She used every year that passed as an opportunity to improve her craft in some way — whether it be her looks, her dance moves, her sewing even her mental health.

Tyler Perry has achieved success in the entertainment industry on a scale almost beyond comparison: he’s the creative force behind two dozen films, 20 plays, two bestselling books and well over a dozen television series. Tyler Perry Studios, the huge production complex he built in Atlanta, is home to 12 custom sound stages.
What’s even more astounding is all he had to overcome to accomplish those feats – growing up poor in New Orleans and enduring physical and mental abuse at the hands of his father. His extraordinary journey is told in Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story, the film from Prime Video directed by Gelila Bekele (Perry’s former life partner and mother of his child) and Armani Ortiz.

Brian Wallach was in his mid-30s, a highly successful lawyer and veteran of the Obama White House when his life took a sudden and dramatic turn. He visited a doctor for a persistent cough and mentioned he had also been experiencing muscle tremors and weakness in one hand. Soon he came away with a devastating diagnosis: the neurodegenerative disorder Als. He was given six months to live.
But he and his wife Sandra refused to accept his fate passively. The story of how they have fought to improve the lives of people with Als and ramp up funding for research towards a cure is told in the Prime Video documentary For Love and Life: No Ordinary Campaign.

Ratings were continuing to climb for the 96th annual Oscars that took place March 12, especially following the all-time lows of the pandemic years. Ron Howard’s Cannes-bound documentary Jim Henson Idea Man reveals a man of inexhaustible creativity – a puppeteer, filmmaker, artist, performer and inventor. The Muppets were just one part of Jim Henson’s astonishing body of work.
“I had met him briefly. I knew people who knew him very well, who held him in such high esteem. He was a very modest guy,” Howard noted during an appearance at Deadline’s Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted event. “But at an immediate first glance, I still didn’t realize the scope of what he had accomplished in his 53 short years — far too short. And so I was curious about this sort of explosion of creativity and what was the engine behind him and it? And I knew he was passionate about his work; everyone knew that. But I didn’t know where this kind of outlier mentality came from, combined with this extraordinary amount of work.

Wes Anderson is the singularly talented filmmaker who has quickly gone from indie darling to Oscar favorite in just a little over two decades, creating a number of quirky, visually splendid classics. Let’s take a look back at all 11 of Anderson’s films, ranked worst to best.
Anderson made his directorial debut with “Bottle Rocket” (1996), released when he was just 27-years-old. He received his first Oscar nomination five years later: Best Original Screenplay for “The Royal Tenenbaums” (2001). He followed that eight years later with a Best Animated Feature bid for the stop-motion film “Fantastic Mr. Fox” (2009). Another Best Original Screenplay nomination followed for “Moonrise Kingdom” (2012). Paramount’s all-audience movie If, starring Ryan Reynolds and directed by John Krasinski, is heading for a $40M-plus opening on May 17 — which is very good for a non-holiday in May and for an original movie.
Krasinski produced, directed and wrote If.
The PG movie is hot with parents, kids and the 17-34 crowd, especially female. If arrived on three-week pre-release tracking with a very-high 16 “unaided” — that’s the category where those polled express interest in a movie without being prompted. That’s higher than what DreamWorks Animation/Universal’s Kung Fu Panda 4 arrived on tracking with; that fourthquel debuted to $57.9M.
Comps are tricky for If: Hello?! When was the last PG-rated live-action conceived tentpole based on an original property? There was the Jennifer Aniston-Owen Wilson 2008 dog romance Marley & Me, which debuted to $36.3M, but that doesn’t count. There also was 2004’s Nicolas Cage action...

O.J. Simpson, one of the most controversial figures in America’s history, died on April 10, 2024 of cancer. A former superstar, “The Juice,” as he was known, was an NFL star, as well as a perspective actor who ultimately became one of America’s most notorious public figures after the murder of his wife, Nicole Brown, and her friend, Ron Goldman, in 1994. And while Simpson was acquitted in a criminal trial, he was later found liable for the murders in a civil suit. Simpson never recovered and later ended up in jail for armed robbery and kidnapping. He spent his last years in freedom but was ridden with diseases and disgraced as a public figure.
And while no one really doubts that Simpson did it, despite the acquittal, there seems to be a plan to shoot a movie that claims that Simpson didn’t actually do it. Titled The Juice, originally titled Nicole and O.

"Zoolander 2" didn't have the best debut back in 2016. The sequel to Ben Stiller's 2001 comedy classic made just $55 million worldwide on a $50 million budget. Considering movies generally need to double their budget in order for the studio to start seeing a return on investment, that isn't all that great. Such a poor box office showing was made worse by the critical response, with the film currently sitting at a dismal 22% on Rotten Tomatoes. Indeed, /Film's review criticized "Zoolander 2" for being as stupid and out of touch as Derek Zoolander himself.
There was no reason why "Zoolander 2" needed to be as bad as it was, though. The sequel reassembled the stars of the original, with Stiller joined by Owen Wilson and Will Ferrell. Like its predecessor, the film also featured multiple celebrity cameos, including one particularly distasteful turn from Benedict Cumberbatch as a non-binary character. Okay, maybe there...

Loki star Owen Wilson is still not letting O. J. Simpson off the hook for the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. Simpson was acquitted in the infamous trial that still has many people divided on the final non-guilty verdict. Wilson refused to star in the upcoming film, titled The Juice, which portrays the NFL star as innocent of the murder. The Wedding Crashers star was offered a boatload of money for the role.

Loki star Owen Wilson was offered the lead role in a movie where he would have to portray the role of Simpson. The catch was that the film showcased Simpson as innocent. Well, the Loki star didn’t have a kind reply for the project where O.J. Simpson is shown innocent!
Owen Wilson’s Mobius and Tom Hiddleston’s Loki at the Tva in Loki.
Loki Star Owen Wilson Was Not In A Kidding Mood!
Before his case became infamous, O.J. Simpson was an NFL player with quite a career to his name. Back in 1994, Simpson’s wife and her friend were found murdered and O.

Ben Stiller’s Zoolander is an infinitely quotable cult classic among comedy aficionadoes, and a sequel should have been easier to pull off than turning left. Still, the film failed epically, creating a reckoning for Stiller. Speaking with David Duchovny on the actor’s Fail Better podcast, Stiller says he was “blindsided” by the box office bombing of Zoolander 2 after thinking it would surprise fans more than David Bowie’s cameo in the original film.
“I thought everybody wanted this,” Stiller said about the sequel to his 2001 meme-worthy comedy. “And then it’s like, ‘Wow, I must have really f—ed this up. Everybody didn’t go to it. And it’s gotten these horrible reviews.”
“It really freaked me out because I was like, ‘I didn’t know it was that bad?’ ” Stiller continued. “What scared me the most on that one was I’m losing what I think what’s funny,...

Before you make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Drama Supporting Actor, take a tour of our photo gallery showcasing the men most likely to land in the lineup. Last year’s race was completely dominated by actors from “Succession” and “The White Lotus,” neither of which can produce nominees this time since the former ended last May and the latter won’t return until 2025.
Naturally, this category’s sole presently eligible former winner – Billy Crudup – has emerged as the frontrunner. Among his likeliest competitors are two of his own cast mates: 2020 nominee Mark Duplass and series newcomer Jon Hamm, who won the 2015 Best Drama Actor Emmy for “Mad Men” and is widely expected to take this year’s limited series lead prize for “Fargo.”
Other outside winners in the mix include James Cromwell (“Sugar”; formerly of “American Horror Story”), Nathan Lane (“The Gilded Age”; “Only Murders in the Building”), and...

A New O.J. Movie Stars the Controversial Charlotte Kirk (But Definitely Not Owen Wilson)
Hey, Hollywood, anybody interested in a partially finished film about how O.J. Simpson might have been innocent? One that stars Charlotte Kirk — the English actress best known for her previous role in taking down moguls Kevin Tsujihara and Ron Meyer in a 2019 sex scandal — as Nicole Brown Simpson? If yes, this is your lucky day. According to British director Joshua Newton, about 30 minutes of The Juice (originally titled Nicole and O.J.) is in the can, mostly flashback scenes featuring Kirk and German-born actor Boris Kodjoe, currently on ABC’s Station 19, who plays the late NFL star turned acquitted murderer. Newton, who has been working on this “satirical thriller” since 2015, says the picture’s main plotline involves a real-life attorney named Douglas McCann who got sucked into various conspiracy theories during Simpson’s 1995 criminal trial.

Jerry Bruckheimer has nothing but praise for Bruce Willis when looking back at filming the 1998 blockbuster Armageddon, which Bruckheimer produced.
The legendary producer told People magazine, in an interview published Tuesday, that the Die Hard star was extremely kind to everyone working on the film set, especially the crew members.
“Bruce is such a good guy,” he said. “He was so generous to the crew.”
Bruckheimer specifically remembered Willis, who he called a “giving guy,” always contributing to cash giveaways for the crew at the end of each week.
“They’d have drawings, and he’d throw a lot of money in the hat, and the crew members would always take away some nice extra cash at the end of the week, whoever won,” the Top Gun: Maverick producer added.

Remakes are always a tricky proposition. Some of the greats both in the horror genre and elsewhere are actually remakes, whether it’s a loose one or not. Be it The Magnificent Seven coming from Seven Samurai or The Thing being birthed into imitation dog from the Christian Nyby and Howard Hawks original. I talk about The Thing A Lot but obviously it’s for a reason. You could also throw The Fly in that same category too while we are here. Those are some of the examples of the good but unfortunately, things can go downhill and fast. You have harmless ones like the Friday the 13th remake or Texas Chainsaw, the annoyingly unnecessary like Halloween and Amityville Horror, or the egregiously awful like The Fog and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Like them or loathe them, or in our case both, they are here to stay, and each...

This week’s Feinberg Forecast includes 11 categories that were not a part of last week’s, including those covering writing (drama, comedy, limited or anthology series, variety series, variety special and nonfiction program), reality programs (structured, unstructured and competition), game shows and animated programs. It is also the first edition to include Netflix’s Baby Reindeer, which has exploded since its April 11 debut, has officially been entered for Emmys consideration as a limited series and will seriously contend in several categories.
Over the past week, L.A.-area members of the TV Academy have been surrounded by — and, in many cases, invited to — high-profile FYC or FYC-adjacent events. PaleyFest’s lineup of panels included The Morning Show (with Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon), Loki (Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson), Curb Your Enthusiasm (Larry David), The Late Show With Stephen Colbert (Stephen Colbert) and Late Night With...
