On March 5th, Robert Sherman, one half of the Sherman Brothers songwriting team (with his brother Richard) who did much to shape and define the "Disney sound," died at the age of 86. Chances are, even if you have no idea who Robert Sherman is, you can sing one of his songs with minimal mental strain, or can call a moment from your childhood that was structured exclusively around one of his songs. Sherman was a brilliant and beautiful songwriter, crafting indelible tunes for movies like "Mary Poppins," "The Jungle Book," and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," but he was also responsible for something deeper and more profound – he helped shape popular culture through songs that were sweet but never saccharine, optimistic but never too sunny, and meant for children but universal enough to make grown adults cry (and sing along). His impact cannot be overstated.
Robert Sherman served in World War II.

Chicago – Walt Disney Home Video isn’t all about “Hannah Montana” or “Toy Story 3.” At the end of last month, they released a trio of informative documentaries about the fascinating history of their own company. None of the three are must-see viewing, but they do combine to offer a glimpse at the incredibly legacy of one of the most important American companies in history.

You may not know the names Robert and Richard Sherman but you absolutely know their work. The Sherman Brothers, the subject (and fathers) of Jeffrey C. Sherman & Gregory V. Sherman’s documentary “The Boys,” not only wrote some of the most memorable Disney songs of all time but simply wrote more movie songs than any other pair of songwriters in film history.
The brothers became legends after joining Walt Disney in 1961, as his company was about to begin a string of belove musicals.

- The Scorecard Review
Disney favorite ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ from Mary Poppins and the whole score of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang have transcended time with the childish delight they have brought to generations of children, but few would know the masterminds behind these famous songs. The combined creative genius of two brothers, Robert Sherman and Richard Sherman brought film to life with their catchy songs and memorable lyrics. This revealing documentary follows the fraught relationship between the Sherman brothers as their career together as songwriters produces not only the most beloved Disney songs but also a battle of personal differences that has resulted in estrangement.
Directed by their sons, Gregory Sherman and Jeff Sherman, The Boys enters a deeply personal and emotional environment that includes many of the key figures who worked alongside the Sherman Brothers in the golden years at the Disney studio. See new images from Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures' documentary "The Boys: The Sherman Brothers' Story," helmed by Gregory V. Sherman and Jeff Sherman. The film will see limited areas on May 22nd, in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Palm Springs. See more images from the film produced by David Permut, Jeff Sherman, Ben Stiller and Gregory V. Sherman. The Academy Award®-winning brothers, Richard and Robert Sherman, arguably defined family musical entertainment with unforgettable songs like “Chim Chim Cher-ee” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” from “Mary Poppins”; “I Wanna Be Like You” from ”The Jungle Book”; the score to “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” and the most translated song ever written, “It’s a Small World (After All)” from the popular Disneyland attraction. While their songs were cherished by both audiences and Walt Disney himself, outside the public eye, the boys’ personal relationship with each other was far less harmonious.
