Last year’s R.L. Stine-based Disney+ series “Goosebumps” will return for Season 2, we’ve learned this weekend, but the cast and setting will be switched up this time around.
Variety reports, “The announcement was made during the Disney Branded Television presentation at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. As part of the announcement, it was also revealed that the second season would be eight episodes compared to the 10-episode first season, and that the show is going the anthology route. Thus, Season 2 will feature an entirely new cast and setting based on R.L. Stine’s iconic Scholastic book series.”
“Audiences everywhere fell in love with the series’ chills, thrills, heart and humor, making it one of Disney Branded Television’s most-watched shows of last year,” said Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television. “We can’t wait to dive deeper into the brilliant mind of R.L.

Disney’s “Goosebumps” series scared up solid opening figures after premiering its debut episode at Nycc on Friday, delivering 4.2 million total views for its first episode in its first three days of availability streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
Disney’s touting the launch as Disney Branded Television’s most-watched season premiere of the year on both Disney+ and Hulu and its biggest streaming season premiere since “Monsters at Work” debuted in 2021. The first five episodes of the series are now available.
Based on the popular books by R.L. Stine, the new series follows a group of five high schoolers who, after unleashing a host of supernatural forces on their town, must combine efforts to save it.

Mark Goddard, the actor who made a lasting impression on young sci-fi fans as the daring, forever impatient Major Don West on CBS’ 1965-68 series Lost In Space, died of pulmonary fibrosis Tuesday in Hingham, Massachusetts. He was 87.
His death was announced by his wife Evelyn Pezzulich in a Facebook post.
“I’m so sorry to tell you that my wonderful husband passed away on October 10th,” Pezzulich wrote. “Several days after celebrating his 87th birthday, he was hospitalized with pneumonia. We were hopeful when he was transferred to a rehabilitation center, but then doctors discovered he was in the final stages of pulmonary fibrosis for which there is no cure.”
By the time he was cast in his breakthrough role as the headstrong Major West, Goddard had built a reputation as a rising young actor through supporting appearances in late-’50s fare such as Johnny Ringo and The Rebel.

Justin Long has had an excellent variety of roles throughout his career.
He's been in horrors, comedies, and everything in between.
The actor plays Nathan Bratt on the Disney+/Hulu reboot of Goosebumps.
In the first trailer, Nathan finds himself possessed by a spirit that may or may not be tied to the overarching mystery of the new series.
We love a good mystery!

Like the two live action movies we got in recent years, however, it looks like the series will not be directly adapting any of the books.

Snap-snap: Striking Hollywood writers are playfully mocking Wednesday star Jenna Ortega following her controversial comments about the writing on her Netflix hit.
Ortega, who has earned plenty of critical and fandom praise for her deadpan portrayal of O.G. goth girl Wednesday Addams, previously made headlines for saying she helped improve the writing on her show.
“Jenna Ortega better be back from NY for her afternoon shift on the picket line,” BoJack Horseman writer Nick Adams tweeted earlier this week.
The Bear writer Karen Joseph Adcock added, “Rewriting is writing! See you at the line, Jenna.”
And then there was this picket line sign reportedly from House Party writer Brandon Cohen that was spotted by Variety: “Without writers, Jenna Ortega will have nothing to punch up!”
Some Ortega fans have pushed back on social media, saying she’s been made a scapegoat for union issues that have nothing to do with the actress.

During Hurricane Ian, the category four storm that destroyed parts of Florida last week, Lara Trump, daughter in law of Donald Trump and wife to Eric Trump, took her son into the storm.
Trump posted a video of her and her son outside during heavy rain. Her son is riding a toy tractor while she films. The child is seen shielding his eyes from the hale while asking his mother to bring him back inside.
She pushes him to ride out in the rain with words that in another context would seem encouraging. “No, you can do it. Let’s go,” she says when her son tells her he doesn’t want to play in the rain.
Instagram blew up immediately with harsh reactions.
“Abuse. Plain and simple,” @tonyposnanski wrote.

James Madison defeated DeWitt Clinton in 1812 to secure a second term in the White House. To commemorate his inauguration, a craftsman from Paris made him a crystal flute. The flute eventually made its way into the possession of the Library of Congress and sat unplayed until this week, when Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden invited Lizzo, a classically trained flautist, to blow a few notes and even take the piece of history onstage during her concert in Washington, D.C.

DaBaby’s New Orleans concert was reportedly cancelled due to low ticket sales.
On Tuesday (30 August), the Ticketmaster listing for the 30-year-old rapper’s show was deactivated.
“Unfortunately, the Event Organizer has had to cancel your event,” a message on the website reads.
According to Nola.com, less than 500 people bought tickets to the concert, which was scheduled to take place on 2 September at the Smoothie King Centre arena, which has a capacity of 14,000.
The price of the tickets started at 35 (£30).
The Independent has contacted representatives for DaBaby and Ticketmaster for comment.
Last year, DaBaby – real name Jonathan Lyndale Kirk – became the subject of controversy after he made a series of homophobic comments during his set at the Rolling Loud festival in Miami.
He told the audience: “If you didn’t show up today with HIV, AIDS, any of them deadly sexually transmitted diseases that’ll make you die in two,...

Conservative commentator Nick Adams has made the shocking suggestion that parents should raise their children to be more like Kenosha shooter Kyle Rittenhouse than Taylor Swift.
After Swift announced her latest album Midnights at the MTV VMAs on Sunday (28 August) night, Adams used the opportunity to turn the news into a political debate.
“Kid Rock should release a new album the same day as Taylor Swift,” Adams tweeted Monday (29 August). Kid Rock, like Adams, is an ardent Donald Trump supporter.
He continued: “People are craving real music with thought-provoking and emotional lyrics. Who better to give it to them than Kid Rock?”
“I Guarantee his album would outsell and outclass hers!”
After finding out he was trending on Twitter, Adams doubled down on his comments with a video. “Kid Rock is a bad-ass American alpha male patriot,” Adams, who is Australian, said in the clip.

"Fire Island," the new Hulu rom-com starring and written by Joel Kim Booster, takes the story of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" and maps it onto a group of friends spending a week of vacation on Fire Island, New York's exclusive gay destination. Booster said he was inspired to write the movie when he read the book during a vacation and realized Austen's social dynamics mapped neatly onto the often confusing, overwhelming, and hilarious social scene he found himself in on Fire Island.
Booster plays Noah, our Elizabeth Bennet stand-in. Bowen Yang's Howie is Jane, Matt Roger's bubbly Luke is Lydia, Tomás Matos's Keegan is Kitty, and Torian Miller's bookworm Max is Mary. Margaret Cho's Erin is both Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. Conrad Ricamora's Will is our sullen, slightly anti-social Darcy and James Scully as Charlie, the sweet but not so smart doctor, is Bingley.

Hey, what’s that in the rear-view mirror? Silly, it’s Memorial day, which means that it’s high time you planned your summer “vacay” getaway. And though many folks travel solo, why not be part of an annual tradition with longtime friends? How does a tropical island sound for a locale? Well, this new flick can certainly provide the latter, but the former…well….This destination is pretty darn close to Long Island which isn’t that far from Manhatten Island and…a big sprawling urban center with no palm trees in sight. Oh, and since June is Pride Month, this spot is the big warm weather mecca for the LGBTQ set. Oh, did I say warm?...

This review of “Fire Island” was first published on May 23, 2022.
Jane Austen is cited just seconds into “Fire Island” — and a character later quotes everyone’s favorite “Emma” adaptation, “Clueless” — and this sparkling tale of star-crossed love affairs on a beach vacation treats “romantic” and “comedy” with equal importance. The fact that its entanglements, misunderstandings, and reconciliations occur among an almost entirely all-male cast serves merely to put a new meaning to the “Pride” in “Pride and Prejudice.”
First-time screenwriter Joel Kim Booster establishes a world in which smartphones and written correspondence can co-exist and where two unlikely partners can find each other by virtue of being the only two people for miles around who want to talk about literature. For all the hook-up apps, Charli Xcx remixes, and six-pack abs on display, “Fire Island” is still the kind of movie where arguing about the short fiction of Alice Munro counts as foreplay.

Though Jane Austen only wrote one of them, there are actually a few truths universally acknowledged: That a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife, and girls just wanna have fun. To the elite group of authors of pithy maxims, Jane Austen and Cyndi Lauper, we may add a third ingenious scribe: Joel Kim Booster.
The stand-up comedian makes a splashy debut as both a formidable literary force and an appealing leading man in “Fire Island,” his first feature film as screenwriter, and hopefully the first of many. While queer comedians have been the hottest thing in stand-up for the last decade, it’s no secret that Hollywood is always the last one to get the joke.
As the likes of Kate McKinnon, Billy Eichner, and Bowen Yang ascended from New York’s musty improv theaters to the casts of “Saturday Night Live” and Disney remakes, the last decade has brought a remarkable shift in not only queer visibility but something far more substantial — queer influence. Queer TV shows like “The Other Two,” “Search Party,” and “Schitt’s Creek” reflect this sea change, but so far movies have been much slower on the uptake.
That all changes this year, with the release of two mainstream comedy movies from gay writers who also star in their projects. While Eichner’s major studio rom-com “Bros” is set to hit theaters in September, Joel Kim Booster’s “Fire Island” opens Pride month...

Inspired by the timeless pursuits from Jane Austen’s classic Pride and Prejudice, the story centers around two best friends (Joel Kim Booster and Bowen Yang) who set out to have a legendary summer adventure with the help of cheap rosé and their cadre of eclectic friends.
In the film, a group of queer best friends gather in Fire Island Pines for their annual week of love and laughter, but a sudden change of events might make this their last summer in gay paradise.

After 10 weeks, 40 games and nearly $1.4 million in earnings, Amy Schneider’s “Jeopardy!” reign has finally come to an end.
On Wednesday’s show, the engineering manager from Oakland, California scored second place at $19,600. She was dethroned by Chicago librarian Rhone Talsma, who finished in first place at $29,600 after hitting the Daily Double.
Going into the final round, Schneider maintained a lead of $10,000 over Talsma. Under the category “Countries of the World,” the clue was “The only nation in the world whose name in English ends in an ‘H,’ it’s also one of the 10 most populous.”
While Talsma correctly answered “Bangladesh,” Schneider did not provide a response, concluding the game and her winning streak.
Reflecting on the game, Schneider said she knew the competition would be stiff going into it.
“I loved hanging out with [Talsma], we had great conversation before the taping, but I could tell that he was here...

The experts are weighing in on Laura Ingraham’s viral “Who’s on First?” routine, and they’re not fooled. Well, most of them anyway.
“Definitely a bit,” tweeted Penn Badgley, star of the Netflix hit You that appeared to flummox Fox News host Ingraham on Monday night.
Said Taran Killam, former Saturday Night Live cast member, “Not. Real. Not. Real.”
And Andy Richter out it simply, saying, “The fact that people are actually laughing at that Laura Ingraham thing makes me feel like I’ve wasted the last 35 years of my life.”
The “Laura Ingraham thing” is the viral video of Monday night’s exchange between the talk host and her frequent guest Raymond Arroyo, a conservative commentator who was bemoaning “woke storylines” on episodic television series. As an example, he cited “an episode of You where the subject of measles came up.”
“When did I mention measles?,” responds a seemingly sincere Ingraham.
