Six film projects currently at development stage have been selected to take part in a workshop session as part of mylab+@Jogja next month. The six share a common characteristic of Indonesian co-production and a recurring theme of luminescence.
“This theme underscores the importance of having the distinctive light of Asian cinema arise from its own characteristics. The participants reflect the new hope of Asian cinema with a fresh and authentic perspective. With this kind of program I really hope Asian films continue to shine by their own characters and beauty throughout the world,” said Ifa Isfansyah, producer, director and festival director of the Jogja-netpac Asian Film Festival.
Selected from over 60 applications, the six include a mix of youth on the directing side and experience on the producing side
They include: “A Ballad of Long Hair” with director-scriptwriter Giovanni Rustanto, producer Annisa Adjam and co-producer Fran Borgia; “Carpet” (aka “Karpet”) (Malaysia) with director Mien.

Pan-Arab distributor Mad Solutions has acquired worldwide sales and distribution rights for Palestinian director Laila Abbas’ upcoming female empowerment drama “Thank You for Banking With Us!” and boarded the buzzed-about project as a co-producer.
The multi-pronged company that is active in marketing and talent representation – and has become a leading local distributor of Arabic-language films – recently branched out into international sales with Sudan’s Cannes title “Goodbye Julia.” The Cairo-based outfit, headed by Alaa Karkouti and Maher Diab, is also becoming more involved in packaging Arabic projects with international market prospects.
Laila Abbas is a Palestinian filmmaker, producer and academic who in 2013 made a splash with doc “Ice & Dust” about a young Palestinian woman who crosses the Atlantic ocean to search for a better life in Canada. In 2019, she was selected for Berlin Film Festival’s Berlinale Talents program to nurture emerging filmmakers.

Jan Naszewski’s Warsaw-based sales outlet New Europe Film Sales has sold North American distribution rights for its Berlinale-selected drama “Delegation” to Greenwich Entertainment.
“Delegation” is a story of three Israeli high school friends who take part in a class trip visiting Holocaust sites in Poland – their last time together before going to the army. During the trip, shy boy Frisch, aspiring artist Nitzan and class heartthrob Ido deal with issues of love, friendship and politics against the backdrop of concentration camps and memorial sites. The journey will change them forever.
The deal for the film, which had its premiere in the Generation 14Plus competition, was negotiated by Naszewski and Greenwich co-president Edward Arentz.
“While it appeared in Gen14 and its main characters are teenagers, this is not what you would think of as a typical YA film or typical YA filmmaking, nor will the audience be limited to young adults.

Israeli film producer Yoav Roeh spoke passionately at the Berlin Film Festival on Sunday about the threat to freedom of speech in Israel under a proposed overhaul of the country’s judiciary by Benjamin Netanyahu’s hard-right government.
“We’re here to celebrate our film and it is also a celebration of Israeli cinema. But when we go back to Israel in a few days, it will not be the same Israel we left,” he told the audience at the end of the screening for Asaf Saban’s Delegation (Ha’Mishlahat).
“The Israeli parliament is about to destroy the Israeli democratic system. The new far-right government that is in power is pushing fascist and racist laws. Israel is committing suicide after 75 years of existence.”
Netanyahu swept to victory in elections last November and went on to create Israel’s most far-right, religious and conservative government in its nearly 75-year history.

Looking Forward to the Next Mistakes — Summary of the 17th Edition of Berlinale Talents
The Talent Naama Bunimovitz at the Camera Studio. Foto/photo: © Peter Himsel, Berlinale 2019
In front of a full house, anti-Mafia author Roberto Saviano brought the 17th edition of Berlinale Talents to a successful close. Charlotte Rampling, Erika Lust, André Téchiné, Adina Pintilie, David Lowery, Sandra Hüller, Guy Nattiv, James Schamus, Joanna Hogg and 120 other guests discussed with 250 Talents and thousands of Berliners about making (wrong) choices and dealing with them productively.
One thing was clear: Mistakes happen and quitting is seldom the best option — you have to face personal and social challenges by finding your own artistic paths, or detours, and pursuing them with a passion.
For Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media Monika Grütters, who opened the screening of Nora Fingscheidt’s Competition entry Systemsprenger (System Crasher) in Hau Hebbel am Ufer, the...

“Be careful what you wish for. You might just get it.”
I came to Cannes this year with a documentary in production, looking for a producing partner. I found one — at my first meeting, in fact. When the ink is dry on that deal, I’ll tell you who it is.
Attending the Producers Workshop at the Marché du Film, I started my day with “How to Present Your Project,” a talk offered by Roshanak Behesht Nedjad of Flying Moon Productions. The thing about being tucked away in assembly rooms and screening rooms is that you miss a little bit of the dog-and-pony show that is the Cannes Film Festival. During the presentation, we heard screams and camera flashes, even the sound of a metal barricade collapsing. But while trying to tune in to advice from the accomplished, rushing to gawk out...
