1992's "X-Men" cartoon was the first time Marvel's Merry Mutants got a series all of their own, but was it the first time they appeared in animation? Not quite.
The team were guest stars on the early 1980s series "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends", as was their nemesis Magneto. A few years down the line, Marvel Productions decided to produce an "X-Men" cartoon themselves.
The resulting pilot was "Pryde of the X-Men". "Pryde" boasted animation from Japanese studio Toei ("Dragon Ball Z"), and so looked noticeably more detailed and dynamic than previous Marvel cartoons. Where it did overlap with those older cartoons was the voice cast: the late John Stephenson as Professor X, Michael Bell as Cyclops, Neil Ross as Nightcrawler, Dan Gilvezan as Colossus, and a young Kath Soucie as Kitty.

In 1984, a lot of laws about what was and wasn't allowed in children's TV programming began to loosen. Throughout the decade, more and more companies became incredibly brazen about including advertising content directly into their TV shows, transforming many shows into 30-minute commercials for toys. An '80s child would watch a show, knowing they could soon hound their parents to buy them the toy counterparts of their favorite characters. This branding became deeply insidious, and many children of the 1980s grew up with a deep and abiding nostalgia for their favorite toy ads. Artistry, character, writing, storytelling, and mythology were all distant, tertiary concerns during this era, and the bulk of animated shows from the '80s are deeply, deeply terrible as a result.

Suffice it to say that Avatar: The Way of Water commanded the Visual Effects Society’s attention. James Cameron box office-smash sequel scored a record 14 nominations for the 2023 Ves Awards, which were announced today.
Helped by three noms in the Emerging Technology category, Disney’s The Way of Water topped the single-year noms haul by Disney+’s The Mandalorian in 2021. It also shattered the old high-water mark for films, set by — no big surprise here — the original Avatar, which amassed 11 noms in 2010.

Updated with: SAG-AFTRA Health Plan statement: The day after former SAG president Ed Asner’s death, a federal judge indicated Monday that she is inclined to allow the class action lawsuit that bears his name to proceed against the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan and its trustees.
Earlier today, U.S. District Court Judge Christina A. Snyder issued a tentative decision (read it here) that denied the Plan’s motion to dismiss the case. A virtual hearing was then held to allow attorneys from both sides – seven in all – to make arguments about why she should or should not uphold her tentative decision, which will allow for discovery to proceed once it’s made final.
At the end of the hearing, Snyder said that she will look at a few points that the defendants’ attorneys made today, but cautioned that she does “not expect” to make any major changes to her tentative decision.

Critics of the SAG-AFTRA Health Plan’s recent changes have made good on their promise to take the plan’s trustees to court, filing a class action lawsuit accusing the trustees of violating labor laws protecting pension and health benefit plans.
The lawsuit, obtained by TheWrap, was filed on behalf of 10 SAG-AFTRA members, including Ed Asner, current national board member of SAG-AFTRA and former Screen Actors Guild president, and David Jolliffe, 2nd VP for SAG-AFTRA’s Los Angeles local, which has vocally opposed the health plan changes since they were first announced in August. The other plaintiffs are senior performers Michael Bell, Raymond Harry Johnson, Sondra James Weil, Robert Clotworthy, Thomas Cook, Deborah White, Donna Lynn Leavy and Audrey Loggia, the widow of actor Robert Loggia.

The fight over health care for retired members of SAG-AFTRA continues to broil, with tension and confusion mounting over drastic changes underway to cut costs amid the pandemic.
The Actors Fund and the Motion Picture & Television Fund have stepped in to offer aid to those who need help finding a substitute for their guild health care coverage. But many retirees might not even know these programs exist, while others accuse actors guild leadership of misleading members about all the available options, in favor of the Medicare marketplace the guild has partnered with through this process.
The two long-running nonprofit organizations have provided aid to entertainment workers, offering programs that include weekly seminars, individual counseling and, in some cases, direct enrollment into health care plans. In the history of video games there have been a Lot of Transformers games; from the 1986 Japan-only Nes game Mystery of Convoy (later available in some countries via Nintendo’s Virtual Console) to the more recent Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark. And when it comes to video games Transformers titles are definitely a mixed bag – the last title I actualy found myself Really enjoying was 2010′s on-rails Wii shooter Transformers: Cybertron Adventures, which was based on the War For Cybertron comic and toy line rather than the cartoon.
Unbelievably, at least in the West, there hasn’t a video game based on the original G1 iteration of the franchise since the 1980s (not counting the mobile phone turned-based title) and the era of the Spectrum and Commodroe 64, making Transformers Devastation something of a big deal in the Transformers community. Jessica Mendoza, an Espn analyst, made history on Tuesday by being the first woman to call a Major League Baseball playoff game. While the moment was groundbreaking, it didn't stop Atlanta sports radio host Mike Bell from voicing his controversial opinions about it. Bell questioned why Mendoza—also a two-time Olympic softball medalist—was calling the game. He even went as far as calling her "Tits McGhee," referencing the derogatory phrase from the film Anchorman. He later tweeted, "Really? Jessica Mendoza made history on Tuesday as the first woman to call a Major League Baseball playoff game on television. Sexist backlash was immediate as Atlanta sports radio host Mike Bell fired off a series of tweets mocking Mendoza, referencing her breasts while belittling the notion of a woman having the necessary baseball acumen to call a professional game on TV. He also tweeted, “Really? A women’s softball slugger as guest analyst on Mlb Wildcard Game? Once again Espn too frigging cute for their own good.” The radio host was suspended for two weeks by 92.9 The Game and has apologized.

The New STYLEThis is the second year that the New York Film Festival has presented Projections, its extensive showcase of experimental film and video that for years had been called Views From the Avant-Garde. The name change (or "rebranding," in the parlance of our ugly times) corresponded, of course, to the departure of longtime programmer Mark McElhatten. Under his stewardship, Views became one of the premiere experimental film festivals in the world, a long weekend of high caliber dispatches from established masters, alongside bracing discoveries by up-and-coming makers whose work somehow caught Mark's eye. His programming partner, Film Comment's Gavin Smith, often brought along selections that complemented Mark's, even as they were out of his usual bailiwick. The Views era was not without its dissenters. Some complained that McElhatten rounded up the usual suspects year after year, sometimes without regard to the relative quality of their latest offerings. Others, most prominently Su Friedrich,...

Philip Danks was sentenced today to 33 months imprisonment for recording blockbuster film Fast and Furious 6 in a cinema, uploading it to the internet, and producing and selling copies to the public.

He also used social network Facebook to offer copies of the film for sale for £1.50 ($2.50), which he advertised alongside other well-known films such as Iron Man 3.

Jon Cryer is the new Lex Luthor, but he sure isn't the first. Let's have a look at the other men who have played the role.
Lex Luthor! The greatest criminal mind of our time! Superman's biggest and most enduring pain-in-the-ass! Mr. Luthor has a screen history almost as storied as that of his caped nemesis, and he's about to be reborn once more on Supergirl, played by Jon Cryer.
Jon Cryer has just been revealed in all his glory as the next bald scientist on the block, but he's certainly not the first. We look back at some of the notable actors who have played Luthor on the big and small screen. While this list isn't comprehensive, these are the guys who made the most impact portraying Superman's greatest foe.
So, fasten your wigs, it's off to the lab!

Turbo movie box office: A costly disappointment-in-the-making? DreamWorks Animation / 20th Century Fox’s Turbo debuted on Wednesday at 3,551 North American locations, grossing a barely passable $5.55 million according to figures found at Box Office Mojo. True, Turbo isn’t a sequel like Despicable Me 2 or Monsters University, but the 3D animated feature cost a reported $135 million. Could Turbo be thus considered a domestic box-office flop-in-the-making? Well, that’s much too early to tell, as animated films at times develop sturdy legs — and not only in the U.S. and Canada, but elsewhere as well. (Image: Turbo snail racer.) (Friday, July 19, update: Following a solid Thursday midnight debut, it looks like the domestic weekend box office will belong to the low-budget horror movie The Conjuring. The paragraph below has been slightly amended to reflect that.) Box-office pundits had been expecting Turbo to top the domestic box-office chart this weekend, with approximately $28-30 million,...

I've had the hardest time trying to come up with something to write about Turbo. I enjoyed it, yet it's a small effort, using similarly themed ideas from the past, giving them something of a new spin and doing so relatively successfully. Yes, as I'm sure many will point out, to a degree it's Cars with snails. I also see Fast and Furious, animated for the young ones and prime to satisfy a large demo. But overall it's safe with a generous amount of laughs, and a plot satisfied with reaching middle-of-the-road status. With ever-so-humble beginnings, the story begins with Turbo (voiced by Ryan Reynolds), a garden snail fond of Formula-1 racing who dreams of competing with the best. His role model is the famous Guy Gagne (voiced by Bill Hader) whom he admires in the glow of a garage television neighboring the garden where he and his fellow gastropods work on a daily basis.

*Spoiler alert. Director/writer: Tom Stuart. Cast: Michael Bell, David MacPherson and Alex Frankson. When Hollywood cannot deliver a good movie that takes inspiration from The Exorcist, like its recent release, The Possession, perhaps going to live theatre is required. At the Victoria Fringe Festival, one of the final performances for the week included a dark study in what some individuals may experience when "Alone" in the dark. Parts of the play takes a few cues from Interview with a Vampire and Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and gives it a more pathological spin. That includes suggesting how a teacher should or should not treat a star pupil, how logical deduction can overrule dogma, and how one 14 year old boy, Peter (Michael Bell), needs his personal space. Father Daniel (David MacPherson) disagrees with Father Elliott Lynch (Alex Frankson) in how Peter should be treated, and most of the story takes places in Daniel’s utilitarian office.

The Movie Pool knows half the battle of the G.I. Joe Renegades Season One Volume One DVD set!
The Set-up
After discovering a Cobra Industries conspiracy, a G.I Joe team goes on the run after being framed as domestic terrorists.
The Delivery
The original 1980s G.I. Joe cartoon is beloved by fans, but later incarnations and attempts to revive the series have usually fallen flat. The Resolute micro-series from several years ago (scripted by Warren Ellis) was a nice sequel, but that was usually the exception to the rule. The announcement of another new series, Renegades, did not set my expectations very high. After watching the premiere, however, I was pleasantly surprised.
Relying on a solid story, good characterization, and great voice acting, Renegades is an entertaining twist on the original concept. It retains enough charm to win over die-hard G.I. Joe fans, and presents an original concept that will bring in new fans.

Michael Bell Jr of the seventh grade was told he must stay on the street corner wearing the double-sided sign after they discovered he failed three classes. The Smurfs have landed on the big-screen and the movie is a hit. While it will take awhile for the feature film to be offered on DVD, the original cartoon adventures are available already.
As you may recall, The Smurfs ran from 1981 until 1989 and were a cornerstone of NBC's Saturday morning line-up. Led by wise and gentle Papa Smurf, the cute little blue creatures did their best to live happily in the forest and to stay hidden from the outside world, particularly from evil wizard Gargamel and his nasty cat, Azrael. Some of the best vocal talent in the business provided the voices — actors like Don Messick, Lucille Bliss, Frank Welker, Danny Goldman, June Foray, Michael Bell, William Callaway, Hamilton Camp, Alan Oppenheimer, Alan Young, and Paul Winchell.

According to reports, Warners' upcoming "Batman 3", to be directed by Christopher Nolan ("The Dark Knight") will feature the costumed super-villain, 'The Riddler'.
The character of 'Edward Nigma' aka 'The Riddler' was created by Bill Finger and Dick Sprang, debuting in DC's "Detective Comics" #140 (1948).
In live action, the character was portrayed by actors Frank Gorshin, (nominated for an Emmy for his performance) and John Astin, in the 1960's "Batman" TV series.
Jim Carrey played the character in the 1995 feature "Batman Forever".
In animation, The Riddler has been portrayed by actors Michael Bell, John Glover and Robert Englund.
The Riddler is obsessed with riddles, puzzles, and word games, delighting in forewarning both 'Batman' and the police of upcoming capers by sending them flamboyant and complex clues.

The characters in the upcoming The Smurfs movie will be played by an all-star cast. After languishing in development for many years, it looks like The Smurfs movie is finally being made.
If you're a child of the 1980s, you remember that The Smurfs TV show ran on NBC for an amazing eight seasons. The series follows the small blue creatures as they try to live in harmony and keep the location of their village a secret from evil wizard Gargamel and his nasty feline, Azrael.
