- During World War II he served first as an officer in the Coldstream Guards, then later, he was appointed as aide-de-camp General William Slim in India, and acted in the same capacity for Rear-Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten in South-East Asia.
- He has held various titles and positions, including :President of the Kent Trust for Nature Conservation (1958-97); chairman of Mersham Productions (1970-2005); director of Thames Television (1975-93) and chairman of same (1990-93); Pro-Chancellor at the University of Kent (1992-98) and Provost at Wye College (1994-99)
