Magnolia Pictures have picked up North American film distribution rights to the offbeat comedy "Frank" which premiered to critical acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival. Michael Fassbender stars as the titular character, as well as Domhnall Gleeson, Maggie Gylenhaal and Scoot McNairy. Directed by Lenny Abrahamson directs from the writing by Jon Ronson and Peter Straughan. Ed Guiney, David Barron and Stevie Lee produce while Tessa Ross, Katherine Butler, Andrew Lowe and Nigel Williams serve as executive producers. Gleeson plays Jon, a wannabe musician who finds himself out of his depth when he joins a maverick pop band led by the enigmatic Frank (Fassbender)—a musical genius who hides himself inside a large fake head—and his terrifying sidekick Clara (Gyllenhaal). It is a fictional story loosely inspired by Frank Sidebottom, the persona of cult musician and comedy legend Chris Sievey, as well as other outsider musicians like Daniel Johnston and Captain Beefheart.

IFC Films has acquired North American rights to Michael Winterbottom's "Look of Love" from Studio Canal, the company announced Sunday night. "Look of Love" premiered Sunday at the Sundance Film Festival. The trades are reporting that Hideo Nakata, the Japanese helmer of Ringu, The Ring Two and Dark Water, has signed on to direct Chatroom, a psychological thriller being described as Disturbia meets Cube. The flick was written by Enda Walsh as an adaptation of his own stage play. It centers on a group of teenagers who encourage each other's destructive behavior. The Irish playwright won the Cannes Camera d'Or for first film in 2001 with his Disco Pigs and recently penned Steve McQueen's Hunger. Chatroom will be produced by Alison Owen and Paul Trijbits at Ruby Films (The Other Boleyn Girl, Brick Lane) and Hunger producer Laura Hastings-Smith. It was developed and co-financed by Film4, and exec produced by Film4's Katherine Butler. Filming will begin in the spring in the U.K.
