- Cole's only child, Joe Cole, was shot to death during a robbery attempt in Venice, California, in December 1991. The murder remains unsolved.

- The January 17, 1990, edition of Variety, in the New Film Starts column, announced the film "The Scan" began filming January 15, 1990. Filming sites were to be Los Angeles, California, and Mazatlan, Mexico, under the direction of Anthony Logan. Lead actors included Dennis Cole and Troy Donahue. No evidence the film was ever completed or released.

- Met his second wife, actress Jaclyn Smith, while guest-starring in 'Dancing in the Dark (1977)'. After a 19-month courtship the couple wed in 1978. Cole and Smith would appear two more times on that show and once in 'A Tasteful Affair/Oh, Dale!/The Main Event (1977)' before they divorced in 1981.
- Played the role of 'King Marchan' in the first national tour of the musical 'Victor/Victoria' (1995). While on the tour, Cole was injured and spent three years recovering.
