- Served as a lieutenant with the Seaforth Highlanders in World War I and was wounded and taken prisoner by the Germans.
- He appeared in two Best Picture Academy Award winners: Rebecca (1940) and Around the World in 80 Days (1956). He also appeared in three other Best Picture nominees: The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), Random Harvest (1942) and Father of the Bride (1950).
- One child, daughter Valerie.
- Made his stage debut in 1914 with Dennis King, who was actually the call boy, as two footmen in 'The Return of the Prodigal at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre.
