- If not the most influential guitarist in the Memphis soul music scene, Steve Cropper is definitely near the top. He was a member of Booker T. & the M.G.s', wrote songs for and performed with Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin and Sam & Dave (he's the Steve referred to when they say "Play it, Steve!" in "Soul Man"). - Steve Cropper is an American guitarist, songwriter and record producer. He is the guitarist of the Stax Records house band, Booker T. & the M.G.s, which backed artists such as Johnnie Taylor, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Carla Thomas and Rufus Thomas. Cropper acted as the producer of many of these records. He was later a member of the Blues Brothers Band.
