In keeping with tradition, the 2023 edition of Cannes Classics promises to be a feast for cineastes with tributes to global masters and restored versions of all-time classics.
Cannes Classics’ Memories of Jean-Luc Godard strand pays homage to the master who died in 2022 by screening a restored version of “Contempt” (1963); “Godard by Godard,” a self-portrait of the auteur; and the world premiere of “Phony Wars,” a trailer for a film that will never get made, described by the festival as a venture where the filmmaker “transformed his synopses into aesthetic programs.”
Liv Ullman will be present at the strand with “Liv Ullmann – A Road Less Travelled,” a documentary directed by Dheeraj Akolkar.
Japanese master Ozu Yasujiro will be paid tribute to with screenings of “Record of a Tenement Gentleman” (1947) and “The Munekata Sisters” (1950) off restored prints. “Return to Reason” – where four films of painter, photographer and director Man Ray have been...

We’re now in the month of Cannes Film Festival 2023 and they have a few more surprises up their sleeves thanks to the announcement of their Cannes Classics lineup. After being heavily rumored, it’s now confirmed a posthumous film from the legendary Jean-Luc Godard will premiere at the festival, billed as “Trailer of the film that will never exist: Phony Wars” and clocking at 20 minutes. Described as “the ultimate gesture of cinema,” Godard wrote this accompanying text: “No longer trusting the billions of diktats of the alphabet to give back their freedom to the incessant metamorphoses and metaphors of a true language by returning to the places of past shootings, while taking into account the present stories.”
Also amongst the lineup is Room 999 featuring interviews with James Gray, Rebecca Zlotowski, Claire Denis, Olivier Assayas, Nadav Lapid, Asghar Farhadi, and Alice Rohrwacher; a mini Ozo retro; Man Ray restorations scored...

The executive passed away in his home in Provence yesterday (June 29) after a battle with cancer.
De Greef oversaw the pay-tv channel’s content - firstly as director of production, then head of programmes, and finally as director general - from 1986 to 2000.
He was brought into Canal Plus by his long-time collaborator and friend Lescure, with whom he created the popular 1980s music programme Les Enfants du Rock for state-backed channel Antenne 2, now France 2.

Kicking off what will surely be a long and storied run, Vanity Fair France just released their first issue, and Scarlett Johansson is all over the front.
The “We Bought a Zoo” actress was a natural choice for the inaugural issue and editorial director Michel Denisot couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.
He explained, "She has every quality imaginable — the elegance, beauty, wit and impertinence that would make her a perfectly decent Parisian if she decides to move permanently into the apartment she has bought in Paris not far from here."
In career news, Johansson has been hard at work on the much-anticipated “Captain America: The Winter Soldier.”...

Scarlett Johansson stuns on the magazine's inaugural issue, looking beautiful in a classy black and white ensemble and a gorgeous gold collar necklace. Her flawless look is complete with a smoky eye and soft curls in her hair as the blond beauty, who is dating French creative agency manager Romain Dauriac, gives the camera her signature sexy stare. Cannes, France -- A live outdoor television broadcast from the Cannes Film Festival was briefly interrupted Friday when what sounded like gunshots sent crew and spectators scurrying for cover.
Actors Christoph Waltz and Daniel Auteuil were among guests being interviewed on the Canal Plus program "Le Grand Journal" when what sounded like gunfire rang out.
Television footage showed Auteuil and Academy Award winner Waltz – a member of the Cannes festival jury – scrambling from the seaside stage with dozens of others as a voice said "there's someone shooting."
When transmission resumed minutes later, host Michel Denisot said the noise had been caused by blanks. There were no reports of injuries.
Photographs showed a man being wrestled to the ground by police near the stage beside Cannes' seafront promenade, the Croisette.
Local newspaper Nice-Matin reported that a man was detained by police with a starter's pistol, a pocket knife and a plastic grenade.

Man fires shots from starting pistol during live TV interview with Christopher Waltz and French actor Daniel Auteuil
Actors ran for cover at the Cannes film festival on Friday after a man fired shots from a starting pistol during a live TV broadcast.
Oscar winner Christopher Waltz and French actor Daniel Auteuil were being interviewed by French TV station Canal+ on a beach-front set when two shots were heard.
"The bodyguards jumped over the barriers into the crowd and pulled him [the suspect] to the ground. The police arrived and told everyone to run because there was a grenade in his hand," one eyewitness told Reuters.
French authorities, who arrested the man at the scene, confirmed he was carrying a dummy grenade and a knife. A police source said: "It really appears to be a crazy guy."

Christoph Waltz and Daniel Auteuil were rushed off-stage after gunshot-like sounds were heard during an interview at the Cannes Film Festival today (May 17).
The two actors and Jury members were appearing on Canal Plus's Le Grand Journal programme when the noises were heard.
When the show came back on air, its host Michel Denisot said that the perpetrator had fired two blanks into the air and been apprehended with a fake grenade. He added that the individual was now in police custody.
No-one is thought to have been injured in the incident.
Earlier reports had claimed that the sounds were created by fireworks.
Yesterday (May 16), more than $1 million (£650,000) worth of jewellery was stolen at the festival.
Cannes opened this year with a screening of The Great Gatsby, while the second day's highlight was the world premiere of The Bling Ring.

PARIS -- French pay TV channel Canal Plus announced Tuesday that it is ramping up its coverage of the Cannes film festival. Canal Plus, official sponsors of the festival, unveiled plans for over 160 hours of live coverage, including almost two hours of unscrambled broadcast every day of the festival. The channel is sending a 200-strong team to the Croisette for the duration. Coverage will include commentary from the red carpet by Laurent Weil, and a daily program broadcast direct from the Noga Hilton presented by Michel Denisot along with guests. 2005 also hails the return of the "Guignols", the populist satirical puppets who will bring their own scathing brand of wit to the Croisette. The awards ceremony takes place on the last Saturday of the festival, May 21. The closing ceremony will be following evening. The film lineup is uncharacteristically late in being announced this year, although word is expected around April 20. It is widely believed that Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith will open this year's jamboree.
PARIS -- French actor and comic Gad Elmaleh will present France's top film honors, the Cesar Awards, at next year's ceremony, the Academie des Arts et Techniques du Cinema said Wednesday. Elmaleh was master of ceremonies for the Cesars this year and also was nominated for best actor for his role in Chouchou. The 30th Cesar Awards ceremony is set for Feb. 26 and will be broadcast live and free-to-air on channel Canal Plus from the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. It will be presided over by Cesar Academie president Alain Terzian and Canal Plus group joint managing director Michel Denisot.
