Netflix movies may still be question mark in terms of being allowed in competition at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival in May, but the streaming giant will be present at Cannes Series. The Cannes television festival will mark its second year next month with Netflix going up against rival Amazon in the competition section. The full lineup includes series from Israel, Norway, Spain, and Belgium.
Netflix’s competition entry is the German series “How to Sell Drugs Online Fast,” from writers Philipp Käßbohrer and Matthias Murmann. Amazon is heading to Cannes Series with “The Feed,” a London-set drama created by Channing Powell and based on the novel Nick Clark Windo. “The Feed” stars “Game of Thrones” favorite Michelle Fairley opposite David Thewlis in a story about a piece of technology that allows people to instantly share thoughts and emotions. The tech falls into the wrong hands and becomes a murderous weapon.

*full disclosure: an online screener of this film was provided by Artsploitation Films. Director: Jonas Govaerts. Writers: Jonas Govaerts and Roel Mondelaers. Cast: Maurice Luijten, Evelien Bosmans and Titus De Voogdt. Cub aka Welp is a film from Belgium. The film has released in several other territories, with a debut in North America scheduled shortly. The film is a coming-of-age horror feature. In the film, Sam's (Maurice Luijten) growing interest in women is interrupted by a small family of killers. Very entertaining, Cub is a brutal horror film, full of tricks and traps. Gorehounds will especially like this outing, which leaves much of the cast in bloodied pieces. Sam and a troupe of cubs are heading out into the wilderness. The camp counsellours are warned about disappearances, in the area. But, everyone disregards the message. Soon, the young cubs are disappearing into the forest and a strange, animal-like child is stalking all of them.

"This dark, bloody, imaginative fairy tale about a camping trip that turns into deadly carnage draws on such influences as Lord of the Rings, Friday the 13th, and The Devil’s Backbone. The story follows 12-year-old outcast Sam who, along with his troop of cub scouts and their teenage supervisors, camp in woods rumored to house a mysterious and deadly werewolf.

Belgian director Felix van Groeningen’s last film, The Broken Circle Breakdown, which played at Berlin, received notable critical acclaim and was shortlisted for the best foreign language film at the Academy Awards. He reteams with Aren Sierens, the scribe of his sophomore feature With Friends Like These (2007) for his latest, Belgica. As usual, Groeningen mines his own family’s experiences for inspiration in this tale which follows the story of two brothers who, even though they have absolutely nothing in common, open a bar together that quickly becomes a regular hangout for nighthawks. Despite this success, the two brothers must soon face up to the difficulties inherent in running a family business. Their brotherhood turns into rivalry, through no fault of their own.

Starz initially described The Missing as a mini-series. Then, despite very poor ratings, they picked it up for a second season which will focus on a new case and different characters. Should they have cancelled this series instead? Will the already small audience stick around to see the end of this season? Stay tuned.
On The Missing, a father (James Nesbitt) embarks on an obsessive quest to find his long missing son. It damages his marriage and threatens to destroy his life as well. The cast also includes Frances O'Connor, Tchéky Karyo, Jason Flemyng, Ken Stott, Diana Quick, Arsher Ali, Titus De Voogdt, Saïd Taghmaoui, Anastasia Hille, Oliver Hunt, Jean-François Wolff, Eric Godon, Émilie Dequenne, Anamaria Marinca, and Johan Leysen.

The Belgian Cub follows Sam (Maurice Luijten), a traumatized young boy who goes on a camping trip with a group of fellow scouts only to discover that a campfire story about a feral boy living in the woods turns out to be true. Somehow first time feature director Jonas Govaerts found a way to take something formulaic like a camping horror movie and make it wonderful. The creepy singing you can’t understand on top of some really great visuals and lack of knowing what the heck is going on makes this one of the best trailers this year.
The film also stars Evelien Bosmans, Jan Hammenecker, Titus De Voogdt, and Stef Aerts. It will play at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival in the Midnight Madness program, but there’s currently no release date.

Below is the first trailer for Cub, it’s so well executed that it deserved that post title, just trust me on this. No hyperbole, just one man’s opinion really, so do with it what you will. It's a Belgian film that tackles some horror elements that could have easily come across as cliché but instead gave me the creeps like a good trailer should. #1. 22nd of May Director: Koen Mortier Cast: Sam Louwyck, Titus De Voogdt, Norman Baert, Wim Willaert, Jan Hammenecker Distributor: Rights Available. Buzz: It's a major coup that Tiff managed to land the world premiere to this sampling of dystopian madness. From the ultra talented creator behind Ex Drummer (which was shown at Tiff in 2007 and its charged content probably sent a couple of patrons out the doors early), the mind blowing trailer below only demonstrates that Mortier's packed tool box contains some gnarly heavy duty visual tricks. The Gist: Sam wakes up, gets ready and goes to do his daily job. And then the unexpected happens. A bomb explodes in the center of the shopping mall where he works. He drags himself towards the entrance to save the victims. One by one he pulls them out, until something terrible takes place. In complete hysteria he runs off till he falls down from exhaustion.
