Foreplays is a column that explores under-known short films by renowned directors. Lynn Ramsay's Gasman (1998) is free to watch below.Lynne Ramsay’s Gasman is a film about family, and a film made with family—the director’s own brother and niece play, respectively, the central father and daughter in the story. Two siblings, Lynne (Lynne Ramsay Jr.) and Steve (Martin Anderson), go to a Christmas party with their father (James Ramsay), while the mother (Denise Flannagan) remains at home. They briefly meet with a woman (Jackie Quinn) and her two kids (Lisa Taylor, Robert McEwan). The woman leaves, but her children join the party. Gasman is the story both of a perfectly banal evening, and of an exceptional event that serves to fracture the family unit, messing up all its usual roles, and dissolving the very idea of what is familiar. Ramsay achieves this by never losing sight either of the everyday,...

Madrid – Spanish sales executive Vicente Canales announced Tuesday he has resigned as head of Filmax International, the overseas sales branch of mini-studio Filmax.
Carlos Rojano, director general of business will head Filmax International, with Ivan Diaz handling international sales for Filmax, backed by sales agents Eva Gutierrez and Irene Airoldi.
Canales, who declined to give specifics about his future professional plans, leaves the Barcelona-based company after 13 years, including the launch of the sales division in 1999.
“I am very grateful to Julio and Carlos Fernandez for the great opportunity they have given me all these years and for the confidence they have always shown in me. I especially value their great international film business vision,” Canales said.
Canales’ departure comes after Filmax filed for protection from creditors in March, but the company has racked up sales in the past few months on Spanish-language titles Agnosia, Kidnapped, Rec Genesis and Rec Apocolypse.

Spanish gore pics Paco Plaza's Rec Genesis and Jaume Balaguero's Rec Apocalypse, the last two pics in the hit zombie franchise, have been acquired by Le Pacte and Wild Side Films for French theatrical and DVD distribution. Does this mean a U.S. distrib could quickly be in line? Skedded for delivery fall 2011 and fall 2012, Genesis and Apocalypse were greenlit by Filmax Entertainment, one of Spain's leading production outfits, in May. Rec and REC2, which bowed at Venice and played Spain's Sitges festival, have been critical and commercial successes -- even yielding a U.S. remake, Jennifer Carpenter starrer Quarantine, exec produced by Filmax' managing director Carlos Fernandez and chairman Julio Fernandez.

Starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan as long-time NYPD partners ostensibly tracking down a baseball card, Cop Out was conceived as a parody of buddy-cop flicks such as “48 Hrs” and “Lethal Weapon.”
Cop Out affects such a generic, mid-80s feel that you keep waiting for the wink.
You keep watching, expecting that, at any moment, director Kevin Smith is going to tip his hand – to spoof the genre, send it up, make fun of it. In other words, you keep waiting for him to have his characters wink at the camera as if to communicate the fact that this is all meant as a joke, not to be taken seriously.
And they do. But the joke’s on them…read more [The Huffington Post]

Spanish production house Filmax previously announced it would be following up [Rec] 2 with the Manuel Carballo-helmed Exorcismus, and today we got a bit of casting news and a more complete synopsis of the possession-based flick.
According to Aullidos (note the translation is a bit rough), shooting began on October 5th. This is a new production of Julio Fernandez and Sandra Fernandez [for] Filmax, shot in English and in which we see an international cast led by Sophie Vavasseur (pictured, Resident Evil: Apocalypse). Rounding out the cast [are] Richard Felix (Perfume; Fragile), Douglas Bradley (Hellraiser), and Stephen Billington (Resident Evil), among others. One of the main features of the film is to be shot with a very realistic tone, so that the fantasy theme of possession will be even more disturbing.
And what about that possession theme? How far will they go? Well, here's how Aullidos describes it: Emma is sick. Tired of...

Xavi Gimenez is one of the most acclaimed directors of photography both inside and outside the country. His long career began with The Nameless, a film directed by Jaume Balagueró and work for which he received the Award for Best Photography at the Sitges Film Festival. She has subsequently worked on numerous productions, national and international. I know I’m at Los Angeles’ American Film Market when, as soon as I get off the plane, I run into Lloyd Kaufman (in a men’s room, no less). The Troma chief serves as the Chairman of the Independent Film and Television Alliance, which runs the Afm. Who better to chair an organization and market dedicated to discovering and promoting movies created outside the studio system than Kaufman?
This November, the Afm unveils over 500 films in dozens of languages for prospective international buyers. They screen the majority of these new motion pictures at seven different screening venues in sunny Santa Monica. The Afm is the proud home for the smaller guys, foreign and art-house features and B- to Z-grade movies. Just about everything stars Michael Madsen, C. Thomas Howell and/or Billy Zane. Best of all, the number of genre films has increased substantially over the 11 years I’ve been coming here,...

Thus, itâ.s appropriate that the next major project for the director will be set on a train racing across the tundra of Asia. Trans-Siberian is set on the infamous rail line as it runs from China to Moscow. Anderson, most recently known for work on HBOâ.s â.The Wireâ. as well as â.Homicide, Life on the Streetsâ., brings his edgy, slightly seedy world to the big screen. The project, with a $15 million budget, is set to begin filming December 11 in Beijing, Russia, and Lithuania. True to Andersonâ.s style, the
