Updated: The Seven Arts Entertainment CEO, his wife Susan and lawyer Michael Arata have been found guilty of conspiracy to wire fraud in Louisiana to the tune of $1.1m.
Hoffman, the former CEO of Carolco Pictures, the powerhouse producer behind such films as Total Recall and Terminator 2, faces up to 405 years in prison after a New Orleans jury reached its verdict on Monday.
The three defendants were found guilty of submitting false documents in 2009 related to the renovation of a New Orleans mansion converted into a post-production facility.
Prosecutors said Hoffman and Arata did this to receive film tax credits although they never incurred expenditure in the first place and hid the fact via “circuitous bank transfers”.
Hoffman was also convicted on 21 related counts of mail and wire fraud
Arata was convicted on seven counts of wire fraud and four of giving false statements and faces a maximum term of 185 years.

Peter Hoffman pleaded not guilty today at his arraignment in Federal District Court in New Orleans on six felony counts of defrauding Louisiana’s film incentive program. A trial has been set for January. A hearing on the Seven Arts Entertainment founder’s motion to dismiss the charges is scheduled for July 16. The founder of Seven Arts Entertainment claims that he did nothing wrong in obtaining tax credits to restore a rundown New Orleans mansion and convert it into a modern postproduction facility. Peter Hoffman has filed a motion to dismiss the criminal tax fraud charges (read it here) brought against him by the U.S. Attorney’s office in Louisiana in February. The 22-count indictment accuses Hoffman, a former business partner, and Hoffman’s ex-wife, producer Susan Hoffman, of conspiring to secure $1.13 million in Louisiana tax credits without having done the work they told state officials they were going to do. All three have pleaded not guilty to the charges. Paul Verhoeven is not a happy man. It's 1994, and the Dutch director of (among other things) RoboCop and Total Recall is in a pivotal meeting with executives at Carolco Pictures. They're in the boardroom to discuss Crusade: a lavish, $100m historical drama described as Spartacus meets Conan.
With a script by Walon Green (The Wild Bunch, WarGames), and a cast headed up by Arnold Schwarzenegger, it sounds like the kind of star-filled, opulent film Carolco Pictures is famous for making. The supporting cast includes Jennifer Connelly and Robert Duvall. The script is vibrant and brash. There are massive sets being built in rural Spain. But privately, Carolco's bosses are anxious; they have another hugely expensive project in the works...

Keanu Reeves movie Johnny Mnemonic is to be adapted for television.
The 1995 sci-fi thriller - inspired by a short story by William Gibson - is being remade for TV by Seven Arts Entertainment.
Johnny Mnemonic followed a data trafficker (Reeves) with a cybernetic implant that allows his brain to carry huge amounts of digital data.
Dolph Lundgren and Ice-t also appeared in the movie version, from director Robert Longo.
Prodigy Pictures will distribute the series as a joint venture with Seven Arts.
"We are delighted to expand our relationship with Prodigy Pictures, which has had stellar successes in television and mini-series production," said Seven Arts' CEO Peter Hoffman.
"Jay [Firestone of Prodigy Pictures] has been prominent in the area of international television production for over 20 years with a wide array of important relationships.
"Jay shares our enthusiasm for all three projects. He has already attached well-known television writers who were part of the successful Stargate series to Johnny Mnemonic.

At any given moment in the nebulous world of big studio film production there are as many phantoms floating around as there are solid movies made. Regardless of whether these loosely connected collections of ideas, scripts, and attached names ever find a home and a green light, these potential projects permeate production offices, studio meetings, agents’ agendas as well as blogs and news sites just like this.
Of these phantoms, those that draw the most passionate feedback, whether they spark hope for the possibility of seeing a childhood memory brought to life on the big screen or threaten to rip apart the internet under the weight of fans’ collective rage, are those that are adapted from works of science fiction and fantasy. These adaptations continue to be the go to projects of many producers due to the burgeoning success of the genres in film and television (thanks to the floodgate...

"The Resident" (2011)
Directed by Antti Jokinen
Released by Image Entertainment
This actually isn't the first time Hilary Swank has seen one of her films go direct to DVD after the films "Red Dust" and "Birds of America" suffered the same fate, but surely there was more riding on this horror film from the resurgent Hammer Films about a recently separated doctor who learns her Brooklyn loft isn't quite as wonderful as she thought it would be. "Secretary" screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson co-wrote this film, which co-stars Christopher Lee, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Lee Pace.
"The Mikado" (1939)
Directed by Victor Schertzinger
Released by Criterion Collection
"Topsy-Turvy" (1999)
Directed by Mike Leigh
Released by Criterion Collection
Sold separately, Criterion is making no secret of trying to appeal to Gilbert and Sullivan fanatics with special editions of "The Mikado," a straight-up adaptation of the musical duo's most famous opera, and Mike Leigh's "Topsy-Turvy,...

Because it's been a story confirmation kinda evening (Pirates 4 casting, Breaking Dawn split, etc) why not throw out the official confirmation of a movie that could be a bit more exciting than those others? We'd heard not long ago that Splice director Vincenzo Natali would direct an adaptation of William Gibson's novel Neuromancer, and now there's an official release making the news, er, official. There's no casting info yet, but the release reports that pre-production is expected to start early next year in Toronto. Peter Hoffman, head of Seven Arts Pictures, which is putting together financing and sales efforts for the film, says, We are very excited to be working with Prodigy Pictures and to have Vincenzo as the head of the Neuromancer team. After seeing his work, especially his cutting edge use of effects with Splice, we feel that he has both the story telling ability and the...

Seven Arts Pictures reports that Toronto-based film-maker Vincenzo Natali ("Splice"), will direct the upcoming motion picture adaptation of author William Gibson's 1984 science fiction novel "Neuromancer", to be produced and financed in Canada by Prodigy Pictures in conjunction with Telefilm Canada.
The 'cyberpunk' book, noted as the 'inspiration' for "The Matrix" series of films, will start pre-production early 2011 in Toronto, with the full support of Telefilm Canada.
Prodigy Pictures' Jay Firestone ("Lost Girl") will produce.
"Neuromancer" has sold over 7 million copies, noted as the first novel to win the 'triple crown' of science fiction awards, including the 'Nebula', the 'Hugo' and the 'Philip K. Dick Award' for paperback original.

Santa Monica -- A clutch of 13 film titles -- some dating back a decade -- has been shifted to British-based sales and financier Intandem from U.S. sales label Seven Arts.
Both companies are well-traveled, experienced sales outfits, and Seven Arts has previously struck deals for the 13 pics, including Keanu Reeves starrer "Johnny Mnemonic," "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" starring Clive Owen and Samuel L. Jackson and "No Good Deed" with Milla Jovovich.
But the fresh representation means Intandem will now be knocking on doors looking for additional fees.
Intandem's sales and marketing directors Billy Hurman and Andrew Brown will be negotiating the renewal of contracts with existing distributors and selling other available territories at Afm.

Last May, producer Peter Hoffman announced that Paul Verhoeven's upcoming Winter Queen, an adaptation of novelist Boris Akunin's book of the same name, would be put on hiatus due to star Milla Jovovich being pregnant - its priority slot was then given to Joseph Khan's Neuromancer project instead (yah!).
