When the Academy opened up voting for animated features to the membership at large and implementing preferential balloting, the balance of power shifted from indies to the big studios the first time in four years. This resulted in the final five nods for Pixar frontrunner “Coco,” GKids’ politically powerful “The Breadwinner,” the hand-painted “Loving Vincent,” and two surprising mainstream studio entries: “The Boss Baby” from DreamWorks and Blue Sky’s “Ferdinand.”
Indeed, one could argue that without the new rule changes and a Disney release last year, there likely would’ve been four indies joining “Coco.” Still, there were several positive takeaways: All five movies captured the zeitgeist in one way or another, and this marked the first time that two female directors were nominated in the same year: Nora Twomey for “The Breadwinner” and Dorota Kobiela for “Loving Vincent.” They joined previous nominees Marjane Satrap (“Persepolis”), Jennifer Yuh Nelson...

As expected, “Blade Runner 2049” and “The Shape of Water” were the big production design winners for fantasy and period at the 22nd Art Directors Guild Awards on Saturday at Hollywood and Highland. “Logan” was the surprising contemporary winner (production designed by Francois Audouy), but Pixar’s “Coco” made history as the Adg’s first animation honoree (earned by production designer Harley Jessup).
Production designers Dennis Gassner and Paul Austerberry will square off for the Oscar. Gassner, the favorite, created a harsh and brutalistic dystopia for Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner” sequel, while Austerberry’s brought noir and water motifs to Guillermo del Toro’s period fantasy-romance.
For TV, “Game of Thrones,” (period or fantasy), “The Handmaid’s Tale” (contemporary), “Black Mirror” (limited series), “Glow” (half-hour series), and “Will & Grace” (multi-camera series) were the big winners.

The 21st annual Art Directors Guild Awards took place on Saturday (Jan. 27). These kudos have a stellar record at previewing the outcome of the Best Production Design race at the Academy Awards. Over the first two decades of these prizes, the eventual Oscar winner has always numbered among the Adg nominees in the various categories.
Period film contender “The Shape of Water” is locked in a tight race with fantasy film nominee “Blade Runner 2049” to win the Oscar for Best Production Design according to our predictions. Two other period film nominees that are set in WWII — “Darkest Hour” and “Dunkirk” — sit in third and fourth place respectively — while fantasy contender “Beauty and the Beast” rounds out our top five predicted Oscar nominees.

In Coco, Disney's Nov. 22 release set on Mexico's Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, young Miguel (played by Anthony Gonzalez) is inadvertently transported to the "Land of the Dead." The vividly colored buildings he finds there are more than just Pixar eye candy. According to production designer Harley Jessup, the huge vertical towers actually reflect a carefully researched and "layered history of Mexico."
"At the bottom of each tower," explains Jessup, "are the Aztec and Mayan pyramids; above that, Spanish colonial period buildings; above that are Mexican Revolution era and Victorian era buildings; and then into the 20th century and modern day....

“Coco,” Pixar’s love letter to Mexico and the Day of the Dead festival, couldn’t come at a better time for the animation studio and the country. It’s Pixar’s first original movie in two years and offers a vital cultural remedy to Trump’s nationalistic fervor (with an all-Latino cast that includes “Mozart in the Jungle’s” Gael Garcia Bernal, Benjamin Bratt, Renée Victor, and newcomer Anthony Gonzalez).
“In a time when the political climate seems very much divisive, it fills my heart with hope that a masterful filmmaker like Lee Unkrich is using his and Pixar’s considerable talents to showcase the people and culture of our beloved Mexico,” said Jorge Guitierrez, director of the first Day of the Dead animated feature, “The Book of Life,” produced by Guillermo del Toro in 2014. “I will be there on ‘Coco’s’ opening night with my whole family, living and remembered.

Earlier this month, I had the great pleasure to head over to Pixar Animation Studios, where they’re hard at work finishing up their next feature film, Coco. Of course, as with most of their films, Pixar likes to push themselves in new and exciting directions. With Toy Story, they pioneered the computer animation technology, with A Bug’s Life, they brought more organic forms to life, and with Monster’s Inc, they pushed the envelope in terms of the different types of creatures they brought to the screen. With almost every film, you can seem the stretch themselves more and more as a creative entity.
This is a tradition that continues with Coco. For those who don’t know, Coco is their latest movie that will take audiences into Mexico and explore the holiday that is Día de los Muertos — or Day of the Dead. This will be Pixar...

The death of Disney characters — Disney parents especially — has left an indelible mark on kids for decades. Little Cinderella sobbing at her father’s bedside after his untimely death. Anna and Elsa’s parents’ ship getting swallowed up by massive waves. The thundering shot that echoes through the snow-covered forest, silencing Bambi’s mom’s cries of “Keep running!” A sudden flash of sharp teeth and big, heavy fins killing Nemo’s mom and hundreds of his brothers and sisters. The dust settling in the canyon, so quiet with the stampede gone, empty, save for little Simba, nudging Mufasa’s nose and tugging on his ear, begging, “Dad, we gotta go home” — to no response. The frequency with which Disney characters become orphaned or have just one parent has inspired countless memes and jokes and even research studies. So when the makers of Pixar’s newest film, “The Good Dinosaur,...

We recently journeyed to Pixar to take a look behind the scenes of The Good Dinosaur. Ryan goes behind the scenes of Pixar's latest.
Over 20 years of feature filmmaking, Pixar has specialised in making us care about the unlikeliest of characters: toys, cars, fish, insects, the emotions rattling around inside the head of an ordinary school girl. It all began, of course, with Toy Story, the 1995 film which transformed the face of animated movies. Its humour, pathos and technical ingenuity were all so natural, so effortless, that it’s easy to forget just how ground-breaking John Lasseter’s film really was.
With each subsequent film, Pixar has explored different themes and set itself new challenges; it’s worth noting that, of the 15 feature-length movies Pixar has released so far, only four are sequels. Pixar’s most recent film, Inside Out, is the latest example of how adept...

Jennifer Yuh Nelson's "Kung Fu Panda 2" dominated the Annie Awards nominations, but the International Animated Film Society decided to give its highest honor -- the Best Animated Feature award -- to Gore Verbinski's "Rango." Both films are from DreamWorks Animation and they still have to duke it out at the upcoming Oscars in the Best Animated Feature Film category.
Besides the Best Animated trophy, "Rango" also collected awards for Best Editing and Writing. But Nelson, the first woman to direct a feature film animation from a major Hollywood production company, won the Directing in a Feature Production award! Yay! I'm a huge fan of animation, animated films are getting better and better. Not only is the look and animation getting ridiculously awesome, but I find that many of these animated films actually have incredibly good stories. Not all of them are good though, for example, Cars 2 and Rio sucked. It will be interesting to see who ends up taking home the awards this year. Out of the movies on the list that I've seen and liked we have Puss in Boots, Rango and Kung Fu Panda 2. I guess it's no surprises that Kung Fu Panda 2 is leading the nominations with 9. Check out the list and let us know what your favorite animated movies of the year are!

I don't put much stock in the Annie Awards and neither does Disney after withdrawing from the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood back in 2010. I have personally never found them to be a good judge of quality and as such don't pay them any particular attention, though I will pass along the information as they have announced their 2011 nominees with Dreamworks' Kung Fu Panda 2 leading the way with 12 nominations, followed by Puss in Boots and Rango each with nine. Of course, while Disney has withdrawn from the Annies that doesn't mean they aren't considered for the awards as Cars 2, Gnomeo and Juliet and Winnie the Pooh are among the nominees. Last year How to Train Your Dragon reigned supreme over Toy Story 3 and I wouldn't be surprised to see Kung Fu Panda 2 take home plenty of hardware, following in the footsteps of its predecessor, which beat out...

Disney-pixar’S “Cars 2″ Is Off To The Races Lightning McQueen Takes on 10 Global Champions in the First-Ever World Grand Prix to Determine the World’s Fastest Car

But can the American compete against international champs like Formula Racer Francesco Bernoulli – the favorite according to racing experts - (and Bernoulli himself)? Cars 2, which opens on June 24, seems to be everywhere lately. Disney and Pixar have been nearing a saturation point [1] with the release of new characters, images, TV spots and trailers. Just this week we had a new full-length trailer [2] that focused on the espionage aspects of the film's plot, and now we have an extended international cut of that trailer. It isn't hugely different, and won't change your mind if you're one of those without much interest in this particular Pixar film. But for those who are ready to go back to this particular world it might be a good extra tease. In addition to that different trailer cut, we've got four retro-styled Grand Prix posters and a handful of high-res images, after the break. Here's the extended trailer: And this gallery has four retro-styled posters representing various locations in the film's massive Grand Prix. Pixar says, "The original...
