Roland Emmerich’s gladiator drama “Those About to Die,” which Prime Video has acquired exclusive streaming rights for in several European territories, is an ambitious project creatively, but it also breaks new ground in business terms.
With a budget north of $150 million for a 10-episode first season, it is the most expensive independently produced European series ever. For Emmerich, the German filmmaker best known for blockbuster movies such as “Independence Day,” the show is a new departure as well as it is his first foray into television. He is directing the show, alongside Marco Kreuzpaintner, and is also an executive producer.
The project was initiated by Emmerich’s Centropolis, Harald Kloser’s Street Entertainment and Gianni Nunnari’s Hollywood Gang, along with Bob Rodat, the screenwriter behind films like “Saving Private Ryan” and “The Patriot.” It is inspired by the nonfiction book of the same name by Daniel P. Sometimes, all you want to do is watch a gleefully dumb sci-fi action-slash-disaster movie about the Moon getting knocked off its orbit and falling towards the Earth. Fortunately, director Roland Emmerich has you covered – he’s built a career out of catering to exactly that need and his latest film, Moonfall, is comfortably his most ridiculous film to date.
The film begins with a 2011-set prologue, in which astronauts Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson) and Jocinda Fowler (Halle Berry) experience a strange outer space encounter that kills their colleague while on a routine mission in orbit around the Moon. Back on Earth, nobody believes Brian (Jocinda was conveniently unconscious) and he’s blamed for the incident, eventually leaving NASA in disgrace,...

Roland Emmerich’s big-budget sci-fi disaster pic Moonfall has been set for a March 25 release in China (check out the new poster below). The movie, which released via Lionsgate domestically on February 4, is heavily backed by China’s Huayi, so this is an important piece of its recoupment prospects. The China date falls one week after the Prc start of Warner Bros/DC’s The Batman.
The $146M independent pic sold out at Cannes in 2019 and was one of the market’s hottest titles. Partners also include AGC Studios and its international distribution network, Centropolis, CAA Media Finance, East West Bank, Mufg Union Bank and SPG3 Entertainment.
So far, box office has been far from out of this world with just $19M in North America and $39.4M global. Several markets in Asia are still to go along with some key European hubs. Emmerich’s last film, 2019’s Midway, did $42M...

The joke of Netflix’s recent “Don’t Look Up” is that scientists discover a meteor headed straight for Earth, and even with six months to plan, humanity is too skeptical and disorganized to prevent it. Meanwhile, in Roland Emmerich’s latest eye-roller, “Moonfall,” the joke is pretty much flipped: Everybody’s favorite satellite is set to collide with Earth in, oh, a day or so, and that’s just enough time for two space jockeys to suit up, shuttle out and set things right.
I say “joke” because “Moonfall” is designed to elicit incredulous laughter as its ludicrous plot snowballs from a high-concept hypothetical question (what if the moon suddenly changed course and came crashing toward Earth?) to increasingly implausible complications on the theme, all while requiring Halle Berry, as NASA acting director Jocinda Fowl, to keep a straight face while saying things like “Everything we thought we knew about...

Exclusive: We dialed in with Independence Day filmmaker Roland Emmerich and his longtime producer (and composer) Harald Kloser last week just hours after “the master of disaster” wrapped on new sci-fi movie Moonfall.
At $140M, Moonfall is the biggest-budget ‘independent’ movie to shoot in recent years. Almost two years after speaking to Emmerich in Cannes, where he described the project to us as a mix of Independence Day and 2012, we checked back in with the director to hear about the challenges of getting the film away amid the pandemic and what its journey will be from here.
Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, Donald Sutherland, Michael Pena, Charlie Plummer and John Bradley are among cast for the big-canvas film, about a space crew which travels to the moon after it is struck by an asteroid and is sent on a collision course with Earth.
