Doctor Strange director, Scott Derrickson, is known for two things: horror and Marvel. His epic vision and style shine through in films like Sinister and The Day the Earth Stood Still. And yet, fans weep over the scandal-ridden production of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse Of Madness.
An IP that should have remained in the hands of Derrickson, the changing of the old guard to bring in Sam Raimi was a decision praised by many. However, with time, regrets surface, and missed opportunities are realized as fans grasp the true scale of Scott Derrickson’s vision.

Doctor Strange Was Always Destined for Greatness
There are truly one or two things in this world that are worthy of being called the stuff of legends. Among monuments, it’s the Giza Necropolis; in literature, Homer’s Iliad; and, of course, Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey when it comes to film.

These days, the Marvel Cinematic Universe looks more like the Marvel TV Universe.
Technically, the MCU does include Marvel Studios’ serialized streaming projects, along with the major motion pictures that first rolled out with 2008’s “Iron Man” and continued through with May’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” but only one of those arms appears strong enough of late to carry the narrative gauntlet (so to speak) — and it’s not the one historically tasked with doing so.
Over the past two-and-a-half years, Marvel’s television content has eclipsed its feature films in quality, star power, and creative integrity. The TV arm of the MCU launched in January 2021 with “WandaVision”, which remains the studio’s most remarkable and mesmerizing series to date.
The rest may not reach that initial bar, but each title takes a stab at revamping, retooling, and rethinking the way audiences consume superhero stories, often with emerging talent at the helm.

Disney+ is regressing — in subscribers, at least.
The Disney streaming service lost 4 million overall subscribers in the company’s fiscal second quarter after losing 2.4 million subs in Q1. All told, the company now has 231.3 million streaming total streaming subscriptions, counting Disney+, Disney+ Hotstar (which led the losses), Hulu, and ESPN+.
Netflix ended the same quarter with 232.5 million global paid subscribers, which means as of March 31, 2023, Netflix is again the undisputed streaming king in terms of subscriptions. (Though Amazon might like a word.) Disney’s total portfolio had previously surpassed Netflix’s subscriber count, though the ARPUs (average revenue per user) are wildly in Netflix’s favor.
Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar now combine for 157.8 million subscribers. Here’s the new breakdown:
Disney+ (core): 104.9 million, up 1 percent from 104.3 million at the end of Q1
Disney+ Hotstar: 52.9 million, down 8 percent from 57.5 million at the end of Q1

Sandwiched between the events depicted in Captain American: Civil War (2016) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the new Marvel film, Black Widow, follows Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) as she attempts to clear some of the dark marks in her ledger after being drawn back into her life as a trained assassin. Ultimately, the film plays as a fine entry to the Marvel canon and proves that super heroines can hold their own every bit as well as their male counterparts.
The film begins with a prologue of sorts in 1995 when Natasha is a pre-teen living with her former faux family—father, mother, and sister—who are forced to flee their idyllic suburban life once their uncover mission is compromised. Years later, after serving time as an Avenger, Natasha is reunited with her sister (Florence Pugh), mother (Rachel Weisz), and father (David Harbour) as they reunite in an attempt to take down the...

As with anyone who gets a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s journey is the result of hard work and inspiration, along with influences and confluences that shaped and continue to shape his life and career.
The writer, composer, lyricist and star of the mega-smash “Hamilton: An American Musical” will be honored Nov. 30 with his own star and has several upcoming projects with roots or connections to his past, beginning in December with Disney’s release of “Mary Poppins Returns.” In the film he plays Jack, a lamplighter and former apprentice of Bert (Dick Van Dyke) from the 1964 “Mary Poppins.”
As far back as he can remember, the original was a staple his parents’ the video collection. “I don’t recall the first time I saw it,” he says. “Because it just lived in our house like furniture, with the other Disney movies.”

Creating the Disney sequel Mary Poppins Returns represented a fresh challenge for director Rob Marshall, no stranger to movie musicals (Chicago, Into the Woods). Another weekend, another blockbuster Marvel opening at the box office. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the latest episode in the company's cosmic-mercenaries saga, predictably crushed the competition, grossing an estimated $425 million globally and perpetuating the studio's multiplex dominance. If you're looking for a secret to the company's success, we'll direct you to a 2014 comment from GotG director James Gunn. "I made a decision early on that I wanted it to be a hundred percent a James Gunn movie and a hundred percent a Marvel movie," he said after the first film's release.

Though people seem to generally associate Tim Burton with a very narrow idea of stylistic and/or thematic efforts, it is becoming less meaningful as time goes on. With Big Eyes, Alice in Wonderland, Big Fish, and Sweeney Todd, Burton may have a certain penchant for letting visuals take over, but he isn’t in the pigeonhole of what leaps to mind when you hear his name. Big Eyes, in fact, is downright “normal.”
But, when Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children comes along with Tim Burton in the chair, it’s difficult to avoid certain expectations.
Those expectations are met well through the first half of the film, but somewhere around the introduction of Samuel L. Jackson as Barron, the villain in our adventure, the movie goes mostly cartoony, and the fun fizzles out.
Jake (Asa Butterfield) finds himself caught up in his grandfather’s (Terence Stamp) surreal stories,...

Tim Burton’s Miss Peregrine’S Home For Peculiar Children is the director’s freshest and most original film in years, while still being entirely within the director’s wheelhouse of quirky, colorful, and mysterious movies. In this new creative direction, Burton offers a more mature, even serious tone, and less of his signature over-the-top silly quirk, in this tale of a teenage boy and his beloved grandfather, who raised him on tales of a mysterious, hidden home for “peculiar” children – that is, children with special powers such as levitation or invisibility, and run by kindly but strict Miss Peregrine.

If you had Haymitch Abernathy and the Hulk face off, you could easily predict the clear winner. But if you gave Haymitch Professor X’s powers and got him to stay sober for a few days, the Hunger Games champion would probably have the edge. Haymitch and the the big green guy’s real-life alter-egos had a meeting of the minds that had Woody Harrelson making Mark Ruffalo see green. Literally seeing green. (’Cause he's the Hulk, of course.) Harrelson, who learned the art of mentalism for his role in the Now You See Me films, got to try out his new skills on his co-star when the two of them were in New Orleans (where part of the first film was shot). It was during dinner with Keith Barry, mentalist and hypnotism consultant on 2013’s Now You See Me, and consultant for mentalism and other magic on the sequel to the magician heist movie, which hit theaters today. Barry trained Harrelson via Skype at first, then flew out to work with him in Los Angeles. They met at Soho House, where the Ireland-born mentalist hypnotized a large group of people. “And then I said [to Harrelson], ‘Okay, off you go!’” Barry recalled. “He said, ‘What do you mean?’ I said, ‘You start hypnotizing people!’ As a hypnotist, you have to prepare to fail all the time, and you do fail because there’s various levels of susceptibility, as we call it. But he embraced it, and we just had an absolute blast while we were out and about.” Woody Harrelson as Merritt McKinney in Now You See Me 2. Photo credit: Jay Maidment/Summit Entertainment Cut to a few months later, during Now You See Me’s production in New Orleans: Harrelson had honed his skills well enough to get Ruffalo to forget the number 6 and to see everything as if through a green filter. Barry contends that Ruffalo was genuinely hypnotized, though the actor says he was only pretending to be hypnotized. But, as Barry explained, proficient hypnotists can tell if someone is truly under hypnosis by looking for dilation of pupils and watching the carotid arteries in the neck. “I think Mark doesn’t even know the truth himself,” Barry told me. So I was curious: If mentalists can get people to literally see green, can they change how we see green and red, giving us the experience of different kinds of color blindness? “Yeah, pretty much anything psychological can happen with hypnosis. So, yeah, color blindness is actually quite easy,” Barry said. “I can make myself invisible, float objects around.” Seriously, this dude is Professor X. [I’ll break here to warn you that there’s a Spoiler about the big reveal in the first Now You See Me film a couple paragraphs down.] We’ll have our full video interview with Barry on HitFix next week, but I’ll share one more tidbit from our chat today: His favorite movies about magicians — aside from the Now You See Me movies of course — are The Prestige and The Illusionist (which both came out in 2006). “Those were amazing movies,” he said. “If I was to pick a favorite between the two, I’d probably go with The Illusionist. I just think Ed Norton was amazing in it.” Lesson learned: Hulks make good illusionists. Okay, Eric Bana, when’s your magician movie coming out? Now You See Me 2 opens in theaters today and also stars Jesse Eisenberg, Dave Franco, Lizzy Caplan, Daniel Radcliffe, Jay Chou, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Caine.

'Age of Ultron' Review: Blockbuster Sequel Offers More of Same to Satisfy Global Audiences' Appetite
'Avengers: Age of Ultron': Chris Evans as Captain America and Chris Hemsworth as Thor 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' review: More of same in 'The Avengers' gargantuan sequel Someday somebody's going to make a superhero tentpole movie that doesn't involve the fate of the world or lay waste to vast chunks of God's green earth. Writer/director Joss Whedon, he of the numbingly gargantuan action sequence, is not that somebody. And yet to blame him for not following up 2012's The Avengers, the third highest grossing film ever made, with My Dinner with Thor is not realistic. It would also be a shame. Whedon, by any fair accounting, marshaled enormous reserves of wit and flair to slam-dunk the first film, a mighty achievement considering he needed to establish the Avengers series as the all-important sun around which an entire solar system of individual comic book properties would revolve. For the inevitable round two,...

Hollywood Records and Marvel are releasing three albums from Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy on Tuesday, July 29.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Deluxe soundtrack features classic 1970s songs from the film, plus score by composer Tyler Bates (“Watchmen,” “Slither,” “Dawn of the Dead”). Music plays a major role in Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy as the great songs featured in the film are part of the storyline in a unique way.
Explaining how the songs come to play in the story, director James Gunn says, “One of the main story points in the movie is that Quill has this compilation tape [Awesome Mix #1] that he got from his mother before she died that she made for him. It was of songs that she loved, all songs from the 1970s, and that’s the only thing he has left of his mother and that’s the only thing he has left of his home on Earth.

Disney’s Muppets Most Wanted takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid, Dublin and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine—the World’s Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit the Frog— and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais. The film stars Ty Burrell as Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon, and Tina Fey as Nadya, a feisty prison guard.

With Thor: The Dark World, Marvel continues their movie domination over rival DC Comics, and at this point, I don’t think there’s anything DC can do to catch up. Chronologically, Thor’s (Chris Hemsworth) latest appearance takes place one year after the events of Marvel’s The Avengers. The mighty one has spent his time away from Earth working on restoring peace within the nine realms. This absence initially upsets Earth girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), but when she inadvertently gets poisoned with an ancient weapon, she’s glad to see the he came back to Earth to rescue her.
The only problem is that we know this weapon is extremely dangerous and could bring about the complete darkness of all nine realms. We know this because director Alan Taylor decides to stuff the first ten or so minutes setting up the film’s villain (Dark Elf Malekith,...

Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium opened this past weekend, and while it hasn’t received the near-universal acclaim of its predecessor District 9, by most accounts it is pretty good. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get out to see the movie over the weekend, but I plan to see it sometime this week. This week’s new Trailer Trashin’ column takes another look at one of my most anticipated films of the fall, Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World.
Premise: One year after the events of The Avengers, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) battles to save the Nine Realms from a mysterious enemy older than the universe itself. The Dark Elves of Svartalfheim, a primeval race led by Malekith the Accursed (Christopher Eccleston), are out for revenge and intend to plunge the universe into darkness. Confronted by an enemy that even Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and Asgard cannot overcome, Thor must reunite with...

Intriguing doesn't come close to capturing the swirl of mystery around Cloud Atlas. Not only have Andy and Lana Wachowski and Tom Tykwer adapted the seemingly unadaptable in David Mitchell's multi-genre Matryoshka doll of a book, but they've done it with actors playing multiple roles in a variety of weird and wonderful locations and time periods. A dazzling new five-minute trailer plus an added bonus commentary from directors Tom Tykwer, Andy and Lana Wachowski are all now available over at Apple. And, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, there are closer looks at two of the film's characters: Tom Hanks and Halle Berry as a tribesman and a technologically-advanced future-being in a post-apocalyptic Pacific, and Jim Broadbent and Ben Whishaw in 1930s Belgium as a composer and his young apprentice, Robert Frobisher.“We thought about these individual characters as aspects of larger characters,” Lana Wachowski tells EW. “Their lives are interwoven...

Sam Worthington as Perseus, Wrath of the Titans Box Office: Gary Ross / Jennifer Lawrence's The Hunger Games, Jason Biggs / Chris Klein's American Reunion, James Cameron / Leonardo DiCaprio / Kate Winslet's Titanic 3D Wrath of the Titans was the no. 4 movie at the North American box office on Friday, April 6, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. Starring Avatar's Sam Worthington, the fantasy adventure grossed $5.42 million. The $150 million production will be crossing the $50 million mark at the domestic box office sometime today. At no. 5, Tarsem Singh's Mirror Mirror brought in $4.58 million, raising the comedy fantasy's cume to $30 million. The film stars Julia Roberts, Armie Hammer, and Lily Collins. (A radically different take on the Snow White tale, Snow White and the Huntsman, opens on June 1. It stars Chris Hemsworth, Kristen Stewart, Charlize Theron, and Sam Claflin.) Chris Evans shirtless on "operating" table: Captain America: The First Avenger Chris Evans will return as Marvel's Captain America in the inevitable sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger. According to Walt Disney Studios, the upcoming Captain America movie will hit theaters on April 4, 2014. Perhaps by 2016, Hollywood's summer season will begin in mid-February. It's unclear if global warming is responsible. The first Captain America performed well enough at the North American box office — $176 million — and ended up taking in $368 million at the worldwide box office. It cost a reported $140 million. Disney is surely hoping that the sequel will outperform the original, which is usually the case — Wrath of the Titans / Clash of the Titans notwithstanding. Directed by Joe Johnston, Captain America: The First Avenger featured Hayley Atwell, Tommy Lee Jones, Richard Armitage, Hugo Weaving, Dominic Cooper, Sebastian Stan, Samuel L. Jackson, and Stanley Tucci in supporting roles. Paramount distributed the action film.

Wrath of the Titans' Minotaur (Spencer Wilding) Jennifer Lawrence / Josh Hutcherson / Liam Hemsworth / The Hunger Games Box Office: Plummeting 61%? While Gary Ross' The Hunger Games will undoubtedly top the North American box office this weekend, there's a very good chance that the international box-office crown will go to Wrath of the Titans, which is opening in 60 territories, including most major ones (Japan is one exception). In the Us/Canada, Wrath of the Titans is going to land at no. 2 with an expected $35 million or whereabouts for the weekend (several million more than Deadline's sources predicted last night) after collecting on Friday an estimated $12.42 million — including $1 million from Thursday midnight screenings — at 3,545 theaters, among them approximately 4,400 3D and 290 IMAX screens. Even so, at the domestic box office Wrath of the Titans will fare far worse than Clash of the Titans, which opened with $61.23 million two years ago. The first movie...

Sam Worthington, Wrath of the Titans Jennifer Lawrence / Liam Hemsworth / Josh Hutcherson's The Hunger Games Box Office: $200 Million in 8 Days As per Deadline.com, there's "zero doubt" that The Hunger Games will top not only the domestic box office, but also the international one. Now, there's really less than zero doubt that the Gary Ross / Jennifer Lawrence movie will remain at the top in the United States / Canada, but also overseas? Last weekend, The Hunger Games opened with an acceptable $59.25 million in 67 territories. But if it drops 50% this weekend — something quite possible — the futuristic adventure drama would gross only about $30 million. If so, could Wrath of the Titans beat it? Wrath of the Titans is expected to earn $29 million in North America at 3,545 theaters, among them approximately 4,400 3D and 290 IMAX screens. The adventure fantasy's estimated Friday take is $11.2 million, including a just okay $1 million from Thursday midnight screenings. Additionally,...
