Think about how competitive the Emmy race is: There are so many excellent shows that deserve attention yet fail to make the nomination cut because they’re either not considered one of the frontrunners or they air on a broadcast network. That’s rough.
Now, imagine being a critically acclaimed drama on a premium network/streaming hybrid in a season where the drama race is pretty wide open. You’ve got big stars, high production values and well-known source material. Shoo-in, right?
Not if you’ve been canceled. (Cue sad trombone sound effect.) That’s the unfortunate fate of “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty,” the HBO series executive produced by Adam McKay that continued to earn raves in Season 2 for its heightened, not-quite-accurate-but-entertainingly-close-enough take on the 1980s rise of the “Showtime”-era Los Angeles Lakers. “Winning Time” should be in the awards conversation … but wound up getting canceled in September.

Netflix has acquired the legal drama “Monsanto,” a buzzy package from this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
John Lee Hancock directed the movie, which stars Glen Powell, Anthony Mackie and Laura Dern.
“Monsanto” tells the true story of young upstart lawyer Brent Wisner (Powell), who took on the court case against the giant U.S. chemical company Monsanto on behalf of Dewayne “Lee” Johnson (Mackie). Johnson used the company’s product Roundup, a top-selling weed and grass pesticide killer, as part of his job as a high school groundskeeper. During the trial, Monsanto Company’s chief toxicologist Dr. Melinda Rogers (Dern), testifies that Roundup is safe. Hancock also wrote the screenplay with Michael Wisner, Alexandra Duparc.
“I was drawn to this contemporary David vs. Goliath true story because I found it dramatic, moving, quite funny and of critical importance in today’s world,” Hancock said prior to the film’s sale.

Jesse Plemons has become an undisputed auteur’s favorite. The 36-year-old star’s beguiling unshowiness onscreen has landed him memorable parts in films from Paul Thomas Anderson (The Master), Steven Spielberg (Bridge of Spies, The Post), Martin Scorsese (The Irishman, Killers of the Flower Moon), Charlie Kaufman (I’m Thinking of Ending Things), Adam McKay (Vice) and Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog), among so many others. Arguably even more viewers know him from his indelible work on the small screen, which began with his breakthrough role on NBC’s Friday Night Lights, continued through AMC’s landmark hit series Breaking Bad and culminated with an Emmy nomination for FX’s Fargo, where he met his wife, actress and co-star Kirsten Dunst.
Plemons touched down for the Cannes Film Festival on Friday for the world premiere of Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness, the acclaimed Greek director’s follow-up to his multi-Oscar-winning period fantasy Poor Things.

Adam McKay’s Hyperobject Industries is set to launch two new comedy podcasts, both humorously anchored in nature. Tiny Dinos premiered on May 7, with episodes dropping weekly on Tuesdays; and Walkin’ About on May 15, 2024, with episodes dropping weekly on Wednesdays. Both series will be available on major podcast platforms, including Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Amazon Music.
McKay says: “Connor, James and Allan are all very talented comedians, and Lord knows we all can use some laughter these days. Exclusive: Writer-director-producer Judd Apatow has left UTA, ending one of the most tenured relationships with a major filmmaker and a major agency.
Apatow spent 30 years at the agency, 20 of them with David Kramer, and he remains managed by Mosaic’s Jimmy Miller and lawyered by Ziffrin Brittenham. These long relationships often come to a close, usually when the client wants to shake things up at a moment when it is hard, particularly in the comedy space. It was amicable, and I hear he’ll be meeting with CAA and WME.
But this is a moment to tip the hat at how the agency helped Apatow build his brand, and how Apatow’s prolific successes were a major part of building UTA. There aren’t many tenured relationships that led to as much success as Apatow has had and how many careers he has launched in that time. That goes from...

Everyone has their own production company!” The mother of four and grandmother of five added with a chuckle, “I had a production company: making babies! I didn’t want to get calls after seven o’clock at night, so I didn’t do that.”

That scoop has been confirmed by Variety, with the site also reporting that Phoebe Dynevor (Fair Play) is in talks to star in the upcoming movie.

The prospect of a shark attack movie directed by Tommy Wirkola is particularly exciting, however, as Wirkola’s movies are always wildly entertaining and extremely bloody.

Few would argue against the idea that Cate Blanchett is one of the great actresses of her generation. The sheer versatility she has displayed in her performances on film has especially made her one of the world’s most sought-after screen stars over the past three decades. For 2022, she received her eighth career Oscar nomination for “Tar.”
In 2021, in the span of just a few weeks, she displayed her signature multi-talent: For Adam McKay’s “Don’t Look Up,” Blanchett turned herself into a cable news host in the vein of Megyn Kelly or Mika Brzezinski to score major laughs in the biting comedy; for Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley,” Blanchett transformed into a 1940s femme fatale who gets one over on an overconfident con man (Bradley Cooper).
Blanchett has two Academy Awards wins for “The Aviator” (2004) and “Blue Jasmine” (2013), prevailing as a supporting actress the first time and then as a lead.

It seems that the vampire genre is coming back in style! A once popular subgenre of horror and fantasy movies, the vampire genre became less popular after 2010 and not many filmmakers opted to make such movies anymore. But, it seems that we’re going to see a resurgence of vampire films in the near future. Namely, Italian-Canadian filmmaker Panos Cosmatos is working on an original vampire thriller titled Flesh of the Gods, and it has been confirmed that the film will star Kristen Stewart and Oscar Isaac!

Leonardo DiCaprio’s career credits proved a long time ago that the actor is always down for challenging acting roles, however physically difficult they may be.
Starting from Titanic’s freezing waters and ending with an almost authentic survival period during filming The Revenant, also complemented by the actor’s real-life accidents like the exploded wing of his plane to Russia or a miraculous escape from a shark in South Africa — it seems like Leonardo DiCaprio is prepared for any unexpected twist of his life or career.

For anyone jonesing for Hollywood to put its muscle behind a new genre fixation these days that doesn't have to do with spandex and leather -- okay, so that definition also applies to vampire movies like the "Underworld" franchise, but just work with me here, people -- the last few years have put an intriguing contender into the mix. The last year alone has seen films like "The Last Voyage of the Demeter," "Renfield," the somewhat underrated "El Conde," and most recently "Abigail" all stake their claim (puns!) to ushering in a renaissance of sorts for everybody's favorite blood-sucking monsters, with high-profile projects like Robert Eggers' "Nosferatu" and the untitled Ryan Coogler/Michael B. Jordan vampire movie still on the way.

Six years have already gone by since the release of Mandy, which instantly became a cult favorite, and it looks like director Panos Cosmatos might finally be almost ready to go into production on another film. While it was announced in 2022 that he would be making a science fiction fantasy film called Nekrokosm for A24 and XYZ Films, that project remains in development. Moving ahead of it is the “hedonistic ’80s vampire thriller” Flesh of the Gods, which has Kristen Stewart (Love Lies Bleeding) and Oscar Isaac (Dune) attached to star.
Variety reports that WME Independent, CAA Media Finance, and XYZ Films will be presenting Flesh of the Gods to potential buyers at the Cannes Film Festival. Adam McKay and Betsy Koch of Hyperobject Industries are producing the film alongside Isaac, who is producing with Gena Konstantinakos through his company Mad Gene Media, which he set up with his wife Elvira Lind.

The wait for new Panos Cosmatos features requires patience. Some 13 years since the premiere of Beyond the Black Rainbow has only brought 2018’s Mandy and a 2022 episode of Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. Though word’s been quiet on his A24-backed feature Nekrokosm, the next big push might be here: with a script by Andrew Kevin Walker and producing credit from Adam McKay, Cosmatos has enlisted Kristen Stewart and Oscar Isaac for vampire picture Flesh of the Gods. Flesh of the Gods––deriving from a story penned by Walker and Cosmatos––concerns Raoul and Alex, a wealthy married couple who trawl “an electric nighttime realm of 80’s LA” and find themselves meeting a “mysterious and enigmatic woman and her hard-partying cabal.” Thus ensues “a glamorous, surrealistic world of hedonism, thrills, and violence”––on the basis of Cosmatos’ CV, likely filled with ominous synthesizer tunes and the harshest...
