The overriding message this market? “There’s a lot”.
“A few weeks ago we thought there would a decent amount but, wow, there’s a lot”, one packaging agent told us.
They continued: “After a busy EFM, once again it feels like a healthy market in terms of product. The early responses from the sellers and indie buyers has been good. Those international distributors have re-stabilised their business somewhat, more so than the streamers. We’ll know more in a week but at the moment there are plenty of decently priced projects with meaningful actors, directors and scripts, and there is a good spread of projects.”
There’s Kristen Stewart returning on a vampire movie, Dwayne Johnson in a big-budget A24 wrestling movie, Mahershalah Ali in a gritty big-canvas crime movie, a couple of Jason Statham projects for those who want brawn, historical drama with Russell Crowe, a YA empowerment pic with Chris Pratt,...

ABC’s Not Dead Yet is no longer living up to its title.
The network has canceled the comedy, which stars Gina Rodriguez, after two seasons. Not Dead Yet drew the smallest audience of ABC’s three half-hour comedies this season, averaging about 3.2 million viewers in Nielsen’s seven-day ratings (which don’t include streaming).
The cancellation leaves ABC with just two comedies on its 2024-25 schedule for the moment — Abbott Elementary, which is going into its fourth season, and The Conners, which is ending with its seventh. The network also has a pair of comedy pilots starring Tim Allen (Shifting Gears) and Ty Burrell (Forgive & Forget) but likely won’t make decisions on either one until after next week’s upfronts.
Created by David Windsor and Casey Johnson, Not Dead Yet stars Rodriguez as Nell Serrano, who takes a job as an obituary writer after her life falls apart.

The Masters of the Universe toy and cartoon franchise got a live-action film adaptation back in 1987, with Dolph Lundgren taking on the role of lead hero He-Man, who defends the planet Eternia (and the rest of the universe) from evil forces, usually headed up by the villain Skeletor. To cut costs, the majority of the film is set on 1980s Earth, with He-Man and various other characters being transported from Eternia to Earth with the use of a “Cosmic Key.” Another live-action film adaptation of Masters of the Universe has been in development hell for a long time, but it looks like might finally escape into production, as Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Studios have announced that the movie will be receiving a theatrical release on June 5, 2026. Technically, summer in the northern hemisphere won’t begin until June 21st in 2026, but this is considered a summer release because summer starts early in the movie industry.

The long-awaited live-action “Masters of the Universe” movie is one step closer to becoming a reality, with Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films dating the project for worldwide theatrical release on June 5, 2026.
Travis Knight is on board to direct the film adaptation of the popular franchise, with Chris Butler writing the screenplay, following initial drafts written by David Callaham and Aaron and Adam Nee. Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner, Escape Artists’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch are producing.
According to its official synopsis, “Masters of the Universe” introduces a 10-year-old Prince Adam, who crashed to Earth in a spaceship and was separated from his magical Power Sword — the only link to his home on Eternia.
“After tracking it down almost two decades later,” the synopsis explains, “Prince Adam is whisked back across space to defend his home planet against the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat such a powerful villain,...

The Cannes Film Festival may still be a few weeks away, but that doesn’t mean its film market can’t start heating up. Deadline reports that a package for one of the buzzier titles to hit the Croisette ready to go. And while it’s a Chris Pratt vehicle, not exactly an actor who comes to mind when thinking of Cannes, it’ll likely be a success for whomever snatches it up.

Exclusive: Now that we know the competition slates, it’s time to bring out the star packages that will line the Cannes Market. Here’s one inspirational movie package that ought to register strongly with the buying crowd. Way of The Warrior Kid is slated to begin production this summer, with Chris Pratt starring and McG directing a Will Staples-scripted adaptation of the the novel by Jock Willink. He is the retired Navy Seal who found a thriving second career as podcast host, bestselling author and motivational speaker.
UTA Independent Film Group and FilmNation will introduce the script shortly. If it’s as good as the backstories here, it ought to be a hot property. It’s a youth empowerment tale, only the title character isn’t waving a magic wand or wearing spandex. He’s a self-doubting kid who gets bullied and is hard pressed to complete a single pullup.

But it doesn’t take long for Scarlet to realize that Satan’s offer is even worse than she feared. The story slots perfectly into Raimi’s wheelhouse, striking a deft balance between scares, gore and humor.

Exclusive: In a competitive situation with multiple studios bidding, 20th Century Studios has reeled in theatrical distribution rights to Imagine Entertainment’s thriller Whalefall, based on the recently published novel by bestseller Daniel Kraus.
Aboard to co-write, direct, and produce the film is Brian Duffield, who has a strong relationship with 20th President Steve Asbell and his team, following their work together on the acclaimed sci-fi thriller No One Will Save You. Samara Weaving is buckling up for 20th Century Studios forthcoming heist thriller Eenie Meanie. Sitting shotgun for the project is Karl Glusman, with writer-director Shawn Simmons at the helm. Producing the fast-paced thriller is Deadpool franchise alums Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
In Eenie Meanie, Samara Weaving plays Edie, “a former teenage getaway driver who is dragged back into her unsavory past when a former employer offers her a chance to save the life of her chronically unreliable ex-boyfriend.” (via Deadline)
Glusman hits the pavement as John, Edie’s recurrent boyfriend. Despite their differences, Edie feels compelled to pull John out of the flames of a terrible situation.
As one of my favorite actors in the business today, Samara Weaving is a force of nature. For some of her best performances, check out Joe Lynch’s Mayhem. The 2017 action-comedy is like Office Space meets The Raid and is a must-watch.

Here we go again. Another year is starting, which means it's time for the "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" movie to get yet another director. Like so many projects stuck in developing hell, it seems like practically every director currently working in Hollywood has, at some point, been involved in this film.
Now, Deadline reports that Travis Knight — the director of "Bumblebee" and "Kubo and the Two Strings," founder and CEO of Laika, and son of Nike co-founder Phil Knight — is the latest name to be attached to the long-in-development "Masters of the Universe" movie from Mattel. The report specifically says he is in "final negotiations" to direct, yet the deal hasn't closed just yet as other elements of the film are still being figured out. Nevertheless, this is exciting news, and brings the project one step closer to actually getting made.

ABC has set Chelsea Handler and Marla Gibbs to guest star in Episode 7 of “Not Dead Yet” Season 2.
“Not Dead Yet” stars Gina Rodriguez as Nell, a journalist who takes a job writing obituaries at the SoCal Independent and soon gains the ability to see and speak to ghosts. The episode featuring Handler and Gibbs, which airs in late March, sees Lexi (Lauren Ash) and Duncan (Brad Garrett) spend a weird version of quality time at the newspaper’s softball game.
Handler will play Sharon Darynson, the owner of the rival news station to the SoCal Independent and the long-time nemesis to Duncan Rhoades (Brad Garrett). While everyone else runs in fear of Duncan, Sharon refuses to be intimidated by him.
Gibbs — the mother of Angela E. Gibbs, who stars in “Not Dead Yet” as Cricket — will play Cricket’s mother, Nana Sugar, who becomes one of Nell’s (Gina Rodriguez) obituary subjects.

Most of the buzzed-about network dramas of the 1990s have been largely forgotten these days.
ER and NYPD Blue might have been the talk of the town during the Clinton years, but in the Biden age, they're seldom discussed outside of retrospectives about what the cast members are up to these days.
Interestingly, the network shows from that era that have loomed largest in the public's memory are the ones that might broadly be described as "supernatural mysteries."
We're talking about Twin Peaks, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and, of course, The X-Files.
In fact, one could argue that no network drama from the past 30 years has proved as enduring and influential as the saga of Mulder and Scully.
The X-Files ran for nine seasons and inspired two feature films, a spinoff series (The Lone Gunmen), and a 2016 revival, with a second reboot rumored to be in the works courtesy of Black Panther director Ryan Coogler.

While speaking with Variety, Lucy Liu didn’t seem optimistic about a third installment. “I honestly don’t know how that’s going to be feasible,” she said. “There have been so many iterations, even after the fact … In some ways, it’s such a strange thing to think about it. Times have changed so much since then.“

When it comes to Charlie’s Angels, Kristen Stewart isn’t shy about letting her feelings be known — she hated making it.
While taking part in Variety’s Know Your Lines, Kristen Stewart got a dialogue prompt from the opening scene of the Charlie’s Angels reboot: “Did you know that it takes men an additional seven seconds to perceive a woman as a threat compared to a man?“
“This was a mouthful at the time,” Stewart said. “I remember saying that. That was from a little film called Charlie’s Angels. We wanted a strong opener, you know? We wanted to really like broadcast what the movie was about. It was a good idea at the time. I hated making that movie. I don’t know what else to say to you.” However, Stewart is a fan of the original Charlie’s Angels movie starring Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, and Drew Barrymore. “Honestly,...

Kristen Stewart has become one of our most celebrated actors. It's an admittedly surprising outcome, given that her big break came in the YA blockbuster "Twilight." Ever since that saga ended though, Stewart has been very picky about the blockbuster films she's taken part in. In 2019, she decided to have a bite at that apple once more with "Charlie's Angels." The movie didn't perform particularly well at the time -- and now, Stewart has revealed that she did not enjoy making the reboot either.
Variety recently sat down with Stewart in honor of her upcoming film "Love Lies Bleeding," which made /Film's most anticipated movies of 2024. During the sit-down, Steward was fed lines from her career and at one point one from "Charlie's Angels" came up in the form of, "Did you know that it takes men an additional seven seconds to perceive a woman as a threat compared to a man?...

Kristen Stewart isn’t mincing words when it comes to her thoughts on 2019’s “Charlie’s Angels,” written and directed by Elizabeth Banks. The “Chronology of Water” director and “Love Lies Bleeding” actress revealed, while playing Variety‘s game of “Know Your Lines” during a recent interview, that she “hated” making the 2019 franchise action-comedy reboot.
The line in question was, “Did you know that it takes men an additional seven seconds to perceive a woman as a threat compared to a man?” Stewart responded, “This was a mouthful at the time. Kristen Stewart is Variety’s Sundance cover star and said while recording a “Know Their Lines” video that she “hated” making “Charlie’s Angels,” the Elizabeth Banks-directed action-comedy that flopped at the box office in fall 2019. Stewart was joined in the film by Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska. While reviews were mixed, Stewart’s performance as the rebellious Sabina earned widespread acclaim. Variety film critic Owen Gleiberman’s praised her “flashing-eyed magnetism,” for instance.
During “Know Their Lines,” Stewart got a prompt that included dialogue from the opening scene of her “Charlie’s Angels” reboot: “Did you know that it takes men an additional seven seconds to perceive a woman as a threat compared to a man?”

Exclusive: Fox, along with the rest of the broadcasters, is breathing a sigh of relief that new scripted programming will return for the second half of the 2023-2024 TV season. But, while difficult, the fall season wasn’t all bad.
To fill the airtime, Fox leaned on adult animation and unscripted programming — both of which put up positive numbers for the network. New series like Krapopolis put up promising numbers, while the return of Kitchen Nightmares and a second season of Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test helped keep ratings steady this season.
While the upended fall schedule due to the dual strikes was “frustrating,” CEO of Fox Entertainment Rob Wade told Deadline that network’s “mindset quickly moved from frustration to seeing opportunity.”
Wade said that its priorities include being a “talent-first company,” as evidenced by striking a number of...

Hollywood has never really accepted that you can’t recapture lightning in a bottle. No matter how context-specific a blockbuster’s success was, you can always count on an executive to insist on making a follow-up even if that doesn’t make sense for the story. That being said, sequels aren’t always doomed to failure, and one of the most famous examples of this is James Cameron’s Terminator 2, a film that refused to do the same thing twice and became just as iconic as the original.
Naturally, Hollywood learned all of the wrong lessons from the success of T2, as most of its sequels would be repetitive cash-grabs simply reiterating on the same tired ideas of fate, time travel and robot assassins. The only real exception to this curse would be 2009’s controversial Terminator Salvation, a post-apocalyptic thriller that genuinely expands on the world of its source...

The best way I can describe the past year is as a year of trend shifts in the film zeitgeist. In a film environment where the most popular discussions often revolved around the never-ending slate of superhero blockbusters (and Martin Scorsese’s opinions on them for some reason), 2023 positioned itself as a time of change in the film industry.
Between the struggles faced by once-dominant cape flicks to break even at the box office and the SAG-AFTRA/WGA strikes being at the forefront of industry shakeups into awards season, 2023 has been a year of unlikely and/or unusual success stories for off-kilter genre movies.
In 2023 alone, we bore witness to a horror game adaptation outperforming superhero movies from both Marvel and DC, video game movies in general overtaking the conversation surrounding films and of course, the Barbenheimer double feature born from a meme before blossoming into two of the most successful films of the year.

Director McG‘s comedy Family Switch was released on November 30, 2023. The 105-minute comedy was the last Netflix original film released in November 2023. Initially titled Family Leave, Netflix’s Family Switch revolves around the Walker family. Due to their opposing views of life, the Walkers are always at odds with each other. Exclusive: Coming off a two-season starring role on Fox’s drama The Cleaning Lady, Oliver Hudson is staying in business with the network. The actor-producer has entered a broadcast direct deal with Fox Entertainment for him and his producing partner John Stalberg to develop comedy and drama projects that will be fully owned and distributed by Fox.
Hudson played one of the leads, FBI agent Garrett Miller, in The Cleaning Lady, co-produced by Warner Bros. TV and Fox Entertainment. The popular character was killed off in the Season 2 finale, which aired earlier this year.
Hudson already has a pre-existing relationship with Fox as a producer. He and Joe Buck are developing the animated comedy Daddy Issues for the network, with Fox Entertainment and company-owned animation house Bento Box Entertainment producing. The PVOD debuts of “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Leave the World Behind,” high-profile movies adapted from adult-oriented bestsellers, are currently #1 on their respective platforms. Martin Scorsese’s film tops all PVOD charts, and the timely Long Island-set thriller co-produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground is #1 at Netflix.
Both films dislodged high-powered #1 titles. “Oppenheimer,” released four months after its theatrical run began, enjoyed two weeks in the top PVOD slot. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” the year’s #2 movie (behind “Barbie” and just ahead of Christopher Nolan’s historical epic) managed five days in the lead at Netflix after previous play, which included streaming on Peacock.
“Flower Moon” and “Leave the World Behind” each reflect the state of film platforming. Apple produced “Flower Moon” with Paramount handling theatrical distribution. It had a 46-day window before debuting on revenue-rich PVOD. At $19.99, Apple gets the lion’s share of rentals.

In body-swap comedies, the acting is its own kind of brazen put-on fun. Adult actors get to channel their inner innocent kid; young actors get to channel their “serious” adult. And that’s why, ever since the original “Freaky Friday” (1976) brought this genre into being, it’s been marked by instances of true Hollywood artistry, like Tom Hanks’ classic performance in “Big” (though that wasn’t technically a swap comedy) or the lyrically funny bedlam that Jennifer Garner brought off in “13 Going on 30,” one of the best movies of its year.
But even that was 20 years ago. In the decades since, dozens — hundreds — of Hollywood comedies have wallowed in a baseline joke of American middle-class behavior, repeating it again and again like a sacred trope. Today, the movies teach us, adults already are overgrown children: creatures of impulse and appetite and development arrested by their immersion in pop culture.

Family Switch Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Jennifer Garner, Ed Helms, Emma Myers, Brady Noon, Rita Moreno
Director: McG
Family Switch Movie Review ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
What’s Good: While lacking in notable quality, the film manages to maintain an innocuous charm, making it a passable option for holiday viewing. Some moments, like a 13 Going on 30 reference and an authentically Angeleno freeway argument, provide sporadic laughs.
What’s Bad: The script fails to establish distinctive personalities for the characters, resulting in a lack of emotional depth. Predictable humor, one-dimensional supporting characters, and an aversion to conflict contribute to a forgettable viewing experience.
Loo Break: ‘Family Switch’ is a film characterized by persistent niceness and a lack of substantial conflict, making it suitable for background entertainment. A convenient loo break can be taken during the family’s visit to the local planetarium, where they argue and miss the opportunity to embrace...

Jennifer Garner and Ed Helms star in a new body-swapping comedy, Family Switch. This isn’t the first rodeo for Jennifer Garner, but Ed Helms is venturing into the sub-genre and quickly found out about the complexities of such a concept. The fun of comedies such as Freaky Friday, Vice Versa, Like Father, Like Son, The Change-Up and others are the identity crises that the characters faces when trying to fit in each others’ lives without rousing suspicion. It’s a classic comedy trope and every generational gap finds it hard to relate to each other or find a semblance of common ground.
The concept also lends itself to many situations where the characters are forced to act like the person whose body they’re inhabiting. Family Switch‘s plot involves the whole family swapping bodies, which will place the parents in the kids’ bodies and the kids in the...

Jennifer Garner and Ed Helms can’t save a lukewarm family comedy that’s over-reliant on potty humor and eye-rolling contrivances
There comes a time, in just about any modern family, when the youngest member of the household is old enough to warrant the commencement of “movie night”. About midway through the pandemic, when our daughter’s tastes graduated from Australian mermaid dramas to more palatable fare like The Baby-Sitters Club and Gilmore Girls, my husband and I celebrated by screening Cary Grant and Alfred Hitchcock films for our kids, who loved them as much as we did! But then the world opened back up, and personal preferences splintered off. Our son now likes watching football games, and football dramas, and while I can stand the latter, it’s hard to imagine subjecting his little sister to Friday Night Lights’ tequila shots and threesomes. Besides, she’d much rather hide...

At this point, the body switch comedy genre is pretty well worn. Big, Freaky Friday (twice), 17 Again, 13 Going on 30, etc., have pretty much defined and exhausted what can be done with the concept to keep it fresh. The latter 2004 hit actually starred Jennifer Garner, who is now returning to the genre again, this time as producer and star of Netflix’s holiday comedy Family Switch.
This time around, the formula is expanded to have an entire family experience a life-altering cosmic moment and become their opposites. The parents become their kids, the kids become their parents, even the baby becomes the French Bulldog. Guess what? It works, even offering some Lol moments along the way in a movie that isn’t trying to reinvent anything here, just finding a new angle to squeeze some more life out of it.

Terminator Salvation, Terminator Genisys, and Terminator: Dark Fate were all supposed to be the first entry in a new trilogy of Terminator movies. Each time, the trilogy plans had to be scrapped due to disappointing box office. But the Terminator franchise isn’t over yet. Terminator: The Anime Series will be reaching the Netflix streaming service sometime in the near future – and while we look forward to seeing how that’s going to turn out, Terminator Salvation director McG is looking forward to the day when he’ll be able to share his darker cut of the movie.
Speaking with ComicBook.com while doing the press rounds for his new movie Family Switch, which will be available to watch on Netflix later this week, McG said, “We tried hard. On that one, we brought in Jonah Nolan to write it, there was a writers’ strike back then. Brought in Christian Bale,...

“Welcome to The O.C., bitch!”
With those five immortal words, a cultural phenomenon was born.
The brainchild of a then-25-year-old Josh Schwartz, and guided by the steady hand of his producing partner Stephanie Savage, The O.C. ran for four chaotic seasons on Fox before sailing off into the sunset (or, in the case of poor Marissa Cooper, crashing in a fiery wreck).
A fish-out-of-water tale about Ryan Atwood (Benjamin McKenzie), a troubled kid from Chino who’s adopted by Sandy (Peter Gallagher), Kirsten (Kelly Rowan), and Seth Cohen (Adam Brody...

Consider the career of one Joseph McGinty Nichol, better known by the nom de plume McG. This is a man whose directorial debut as a feature filmmaker in 2000 was the paradigm-shifting, zeitgeist-grabbing, new millennium bar-setter "Charlie's Angels." Sit with that for a moment. His next film? The extraordinary sequel "Full Throttle." Mind you these were gigs that star and producer Drew Barrymore personally sought out McG for based on the music videos he made for the band Sugar Ray. One of the more significant sliding doors moments in modern American history is the fact that McG was the original frontman for the band that would become Sugar Ray, before humbly realizing his talents lay elsewhere and convincing high school buddy Mark McGrath to take over.
McG helped launch and executive produce both "The Oc" and "Supernatural," he produced "Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll" and "Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious,...
