In a stark debut from Leo Leigh, Maggie O’Neill meets a mysterious biker and discovers his son is a narcissistic YouTuber and wannabe dancer
This bleak, stark debut feature from writer-director Leo Leigh bears the obvious influences of his parents Mike Leigh and Alison Steadman; it has a barbed cartoony unhappiness, a depiction of its characters verging on caricature and misanthropy but not quite, and the notes of redemption offered at the end are ambiguous. It is not a theatre of cruelty so much as a theatre of mockery; a world where a lot of the time absurd people are laughing at the absurdity of others, partly – but not wholly – because of how unhappy they are.
Leigh allows us to see how the tonal sourness challenges the adjective in the title. Maggie O’Neill plays Sue, a woman who runs a (depressing) children’s party shop hiring out balloons and banners,...

Director: Julian Kerridge Writers: Martin Sadofski, Julian Kerridge Starring: Jack McMullen, Reece Noi, Leila Mimmack, Georgia Henshaw, Rita Tushingham, Maggie O'Neill, Andrew Knott Seamonsters tells the story of two shiftless young friends, Sam (Jack McMullen) and Kieran (Reece Noi), who are biding their time during the off-season in the English seaside town of Worthing. Sam and Kieran are stuck in a kind of shiftless limbo. Too old to be kids any more, they drift along without any plans for the future, vaguely aware that they’re expected to be adults. Of course, even lifelong friendships can completely derail when a girl enters the picture. One day the boys meet Lori (Leila Mimmack), a mysterious, dark-eyed girl who’s somehow escaped their notice until now. Lori lives on the fringes with her sad,...

Even if you watched it, it's unlikely you'll ever remember the 90s supernatural horror/fantasy series Chiller originally shown in 1995 on ITV; There's a good reason for that. Recognisable writers and well-respected British actors make everything look good on paper, but watching the five episodes suggests they were nothing more than early pre-fame career-building work for the majority of the cast.
Set in London and flashing back to a Ouija board séance, Prophecy is the opening story.
