A third term in the White House may be on former President Donald Trump‘s radar if he is reelected this year. At the National Rifle Association annual meeting in Dallas this weekend, Trump threw out the idea in his speech.
“You know, Fdr 16 years—almost 16 years—he was four terms. I don’t know, are we going to be considered three-term? Or two-term?” Trump said on Saturday. A person in the crowd responded to Trump, saying, “Three.”
During his 2020 presidential campaign bid, Trump also mentioned serving in office for three terms multiple times. However, Trump seemed to retract this idea in an interview in April, saying, “I wouldn’t be in favor of it at all. I intend to serve four years and do a great job.”
If Trump is reelected this year, it is unclear how serious he is about prolonging his stay in office. The 22nd Amendment,...

Has there ever been a more bonkers superhero than Deadpool? Equal parts violent and zany, this lethal mercenary, also known as the "Merc with a Mouth," first appeared in the "New Mutants" comic series in December 1990, albeit as a villain. Created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza, Deadpool (aka Wade Wilson) went on to star in his own mini-series. He eventually gained notoriety for his dark humor, meta-commentary, and affinity for breaking the fourth wall. Over the years, Deadpool has teamed up with or battled alongside Marvel's hero gallery and has since become one of the brand's most popular characters. In fact, according to Gitnux Marketdata Report, he's the most liked character on Facebook. So take that, Iron Man!
The release of 2016's "Deadpool," starring Ryan Reynolds as Wilson, further cemented the character's popularity. Uniquely, this was the actor's second stint in the role, though the less said about his...

Michael Douglas is in terrific form as Benjamin Franklin in Apple TV’s new historical limited series “Franklin” but he isn’t the only actor to emerge with awards whispers whizzing through the air. Veteran actor Eddie Marsan features in a key supporting role as John Adams and delivers one of the finest performances of his career while also shining a new light onto a man that many actors have depicted before.
The limited series follows Franklin’s eight years in France as he tried to persuade King Louis XVI (Tom Pezier) to join the colonies’ cause and aid them in the American Revolutionary War. The scenes between Douglas and Marsan are nothing short of spectacular and Marsan nails his performance as Adams, as noted by critics.
Clint Worthington (Roger Ebert) noted: “Marsan’s energy as Adams is decidedly different from Paul Giamatti’s in Ellis’ original 2008 miniseries—“Franklin” feels...

The Amityville Horror (1979)
The Movie Says: A family moves into a home that had been the site of a grisly mass murder, and soon realize the house is incredibly haunted. The movie is based on the bestselling 'non-fiction' book.
In Real Life: After the previous inhabitants of a certain Amityville house were murdered, the Lutz family moved in – though they were worried about making the mortgage payments on the $80,000 home (just under half a million dollars today).
The idea of writing a book about the house being 'haunted' post-murder was actually proposed by the killer's lawyer, who thought it would make a pile of cash.
Long story short: the book got published and sold 11 million copies, the Lutzes got rich off of their lie, and nobody else who lived in the house ever experienced paranormal activity. So 'The Amityville Horror' isn't based on a true story so much...

As President Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, “It is a splendid thing that for just fifteen cents, an American can go to a movie and look at the smiling face of a baby and forget his troubles.”
Few Hollywood stars were ever as big — or little — as Shirley Temple. This dimpled darling with her bouncy corkscrew curls and delightful tap-dance routines brought cheer and spread sunshine to moviegoers during the darkest days of the Great Depression. She was the No. 1 box-office draw from 1935 to 1938 and was the first child star to be presented with a special Juvenile Academy Award for her big-screen contributions during 1934. She even had her own line of licensed merchandise including look-alike dolls, dishes and clothing. Before 1935 ended, her income from licensed goods would be more than $100,000 – doubling what she made from her movies.

In Hamilton McFadden's 1934 film "Stand Up and Cheer!," the unnamed off-screen president (actually Franklin D. Roosevelt) posits that the real reason for Great Depression was a sudden crisis of optimism. Additionally, wicked bankers were running amok and getting rich while the rest of the nation starved, leaving everyone nihilistic and horrified. The wasteful and corrupt Warren Harding administration followed by the Crash of '29 isn't mentioned, as McFadden's film sought to cheer people up, not make their depression — and the Depression — any worse. In "Stand Up and Cheer!," Fdr created a Department of Amusement and appoints a secretary (Warner Baxter) to oversee a feel-good, nationwide show to keep morale up.
The bulk of the 80-minute film is a series of auditions in the secretary's office wherein performers come in to sing and dance, effectively turning the movie into a revue. Modern audiences may bristle at some racist caricatures, notably actress...

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-vt) is leading renewed efforts to institute a 32-hour work week nationwide — one that crucially does not result in a decrease in pay.
Sanders, who helms the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (Help), will introduce a bill Thursday that seeks to reduce the standard federal work week from 40 hours to 32 hours, without a reduction in compensation. Sanders justified the shift in work hours by citing productivity increases made via automation and AI.

Donald Trump became the 45th president of the United States on a promise to “Make America Great Again.” But a preeminent group of political scientists that Trump would no doubt characterize as “haters and losers” has once again ranked him as the worst commander-in-chief in the nation’s history.

I love Stanley Kubrick‘s classic Stephen King adaptation The Shining (watch it Here) and would probably have a blast watching the movie at the Timberline Lodge in Oregon – which is the place that stood in for the Overlook Hotel in the exterior shots of the location. (The interior scenes were filmed on sets in England.) Chances are, I’m not going to be able to do that any time soon, but some fans are going to have that opportunity later this year! On Set Cinema has announced that they will be showing The Shining at the Timberline Lodge on Sunday, October 6th! The event details can be found at This Link and tickets can be purchased Here.

What made the original television run of "The Twilight Zone" (from 1959-1964) so special was the way individual episodes could function on multiple levels. Since the show was an anthology, and every episode had its own premise, it was free to explore whatever it wanted to. The first level of a given episode was the superficially exciting one that put you in the shoes of a protagonist faced with an unnerving science-fiction premise. But the other level went deeper, studying human nature at extremes. Host and show creator Rod Serling would show up to deliver the moral, but the twists, unhappy endings, and central ironies continue to be surprising and disturbing.
The series typically explored prejudice in the form of racism or anti-intellectualism, or in one of its most famous episodes, the idea of beauty standards. But it also explored nostalgia, whether for a bygone way of life or for the one that got away.

Rush singer-bassist Geddy Lee has been an avid collector of baseball memorabilia for decades, and now he’s auctioning off hundred of items from his collection.
Lee’s love for the game of baseball led him to pursue artifacts from America’s favorite pastime while touring the States with Rush in the late 1970s. He’s been collecting ever since, obtaining some truly remarkable pieces along the way — some of which will be put on the block on December 6th during a live auction hosted by Christie’s and Hunt Auctions.
Highlights include a baseball signed by The Beatles during their Shea Stadium appearance in 1965; balls signed by US presidents John F. Kennedy, Harry Truman, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Lyndon B. Johnson; and a bat used by Mickey Mantle in the 1960 World Series. Overall, Geddy’s collection includes “hundreds of autographed and historic milestone baseballs, spanning over three centuries of Major League Baseball and American history.

Tyrannical and brilliant, director Michael Curtiz created film legends out of mere stars, and turned movies into myth. Here are some of his greatest films.
When movie enthusiasts think of legendary director Michael Curtiz, the first thing that pops into their mind is Casablanca (1942), consistently named to, and occasionally topping, lists of the greatest films of all time. Although if we’re being honest, most people think of it as a Humphrey Bogart movie. The same could be said of Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) and The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). These are known for their stars, James Cagney, and Errol Flynn, the latter of whom Curtiz put on the map with Captain Blood (1935). In the director’s hands, actors and characters merged into a mythology which exceeded mere signature roles, becoming universal symbols.

Though I have some complaints about Starfield‘s RPG and exploration mechanics, I have to say that the game’s side missions are some of the best I’ve seen in a Bethesda game since Oblivion. Granted, Starfield‘s massive galaxy is filled with slightly less inspiring “kill and fetch” assignments, but I was stunned by both the quality of the majority of Starfield‘s sidequests and how many of those quests exist far enough away from the game’s vaguely beaten path to ensure you may never experience them.
While you may want to blaze through Starfield’s… serviceable campaign in order to unlock its various New Game+ benefits, I can assure you that you will not see the best that this game has to offer until you take the time to discover and complete some of the more obscure quests that often...

Doclisboa's retrospectives are moments distinguished by curatorial projects that aim to offer a precise and comprehensive vision of the themes and filmmakers to which they are dedicated; the preview session that will take place on the terrace of the Cinemateca Portuguesa on the 7th of July at 21h30, will be a first glimpse into this year's programme.
This year Doclisboa, in partnership with Cinemateca Portuguesa, dedicates its thematic retrospective to the delicate coalition of radical filmmakers who, in the midst of the Great Depression, fought to birth the new genre of Social Documentary as a tool for socio-political change in the USA.
In parallel to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's commitment to social justice through the policies of his government's New Deal in the 1930s, a generation of filmmakers sought to infuse facts with feelings, art with agitprop and propaganda, through a cinema of reality that sought to communicate, and perhaps even help resolve,...

This article contains mild Oppenheimer spoilers.
At 8:15 a.m. on the morning of Aug. 6, 1945, an American B-29 bomber called the Enola Gay arrived at its target above the heart of Hiroshima, Japan. Below was a city that had been left relatively untouched by the ravages of the brutal Second World War. That changed to horrifying effect after the B-29 dropped its payload above a bridge at the city’s center: an atomic bomb codenamed “Little Boy.” It would be the first nuclear weapon deployed in anger in the history of humanity. The second came three days later when another A-bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Nagasaki.
Nearly 80 years later, the carnage and horror these weapons inflicted remain infamous. With each bomb, 40,000 people—men, women, and children—were vaporized in an instant by the heat of an atomic flash. Thousands more perished from the devastation inflicted by the fireball which followed.

In true Christopher Nolan fashion, Oppenheimer is a lot of movie. As usual, the often brilliant and sometimes equally frustrating auteur has set out to make the ultimate of whatever genre he’s working in, whether it’s the superhero movie with The Dark Knight, the techno-thriller with Inception, or the mind-bending space travel epic with Interstellar.
In this case, he’s made the final word on biopics about controversial 20th century scientists: an exhaustive and exhausting look at the rise and fall of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist widely credited as “the father of the atomic bomb.” Oppenheimer is the man who oversaw the American scientific effort, known as the Manhattan Project, to introduce nuclear weapons to humanity. The results were terrifying.
But Oppenheimer is about more than just the man, a haunted, hard-to-know figure played with impressive backbone and clarity by Cillian Murphy in a career-defining performance.

Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist widely credited as “the father of the atomic bomb.” Oppenheimer is the man who oversaw the American scientific effort, known as the Manhattan Project, to introduce nuclear weapons to humanity. The results were terrifying.

President Biden has put Marjorie Taylor Greene’s head-scratching speech at a conservative conference, in which she compared his achievements to those of Franklin D. Roosevelt and Lyndon Baines Johnson, to good use.
In a largely tongue-in-cheek campaign ad posted Tuesday, Greene’s speech overlays a montage of the president in action, spans 30 seconds and kindly includes subtitles.
Greene was widely and roundly mocked for the speech Sunday at the Turning Point Action Conference, in which she laid out the presidential legacies of Fdr and Lbj and drew a link from them to Biden, seemingly with the intention to malign the president.

New Delhi, July 18 (Ians) With Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ gearing up for its theatrical release, interest in the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, also referred to as the ‘Father of the atom bomb’, has skyrocketed, especially his leaning towards Hinduism and his references to the Bhagavad Gita.
Oppenheimer and his team altered the course of human history during World War II with the Manhattan Project, which led to the creation of the first nuclear bomb in 1945.
Throughout the course of his life, particularly during the nuclear tests, Oppenheimer found a strong source of inspiration in the classical Hindu text, the Bhagavad Gita, to which he looked for many answers that helped shape his entire philosophy of life itself.
This was especially true, when faced with the enormity of his creation and the devastation it could unleash, the physicist cited the law of dharma or sacred duty from the Bhagavad Gita.

David Corenswet may be the first Jewish actor to play Superman, but the Man of Steel himself is as Jewish as matzo ball soup.
As you may or may not know, Superman debuted in 1938, the creation of American and Canadian Jewish teenagers, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. But that authorship is just the beginning. In fact, the entire Superman myth is an American-Jewish fantasy, lifted from numerous Jewish legends and fulfilling the dream of revenge against Hitler.

Italian actor-turned-director Andrea Di Stefano, whose sleek cop thriller “Last Night of Amore” just had its U.S. premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, is in advanced stages of development on “Karski” a feature about Jan Karski, the World War II Polish resistance fighter who risked his life to blow the whistle on the Holocaust.
Di Stefano’s high-profile project, which is titled “Karski,” is being developed by New York City-based production company Phiphen Pictures, the indie founded by Molly Conners most recently behind Netflix’s “Like Father” and “It’s Bruno!,” the director said. Italy’s expanding Indiana Production, which shepherded “Amore,” is also on board.
Karski in 1942, defying great danger, twice infiltrated Warsaw’s Jewish Ghetto to witness its horrors and managed to give first-hand accounts of the Holocaust from the Warsaw Ghetto to the Allies, including U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1943. But his alarm cries fell on deaf ears.

“Churchill said about Fdr that it was like opening your first bottle of champagne to encounter him. There was such sparkle,” says leading presidential historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, executive producer of Fdr, a three-part documentary series about America’s longest-serving — and possibly most effervescent — president, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Roosevelt held office from 1933 until his death in 1945 and famously led the nation out of the Great Depression and toward victory in World War II. The sociable, naturally optimistic Harvard grad comes to life in vivid dramatizations based on letters and diaries. Context is provided by archival footage, interviews with historians and scholars, and prized documents — like a draft of his speech after the Pearl Harbor attack, where he crossed out “world history” and wrote “infamy.” The doc (premiering May 29 on the History Channel) also looks at Fdr’s formative years, including as a spunky young boy in elite Hyde Park, New York.

Franklin D. Roosevelt is one of the most influential presidents in U.S. history: He ended the Great Depression through his radical New Deal programs, some of which are still in use today; led the U.S. through the bulk of WWII; unified the American public in unprecedented ways through his Fireside Chats; was elected four times; and was the first openly disabled president. So, when the History Channel announced the three-part presidential docuseries, Fdr, promising to tell the untold story, expectations were understandably high. Unfortunately, the series, which is co-produced by Bradley Cooper and based on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Leadership: In Turbulent Times, fails to meet those expectations.

IATSE’s General Executive Board voted unanimously today to endorse the re-election of President Joe Biden. The vote came shortly after Biden announced that he would be running for a second term.
“In 2020, President Biden pledged to be the most pro-union president since Franklin D. Roosevelt,” the union said in a statement. “In the opinion of the General Executive Board, he has fulfilled that promise time and again since taking office. Our union has never had a more willing collaborator in the White House. The Biden-Harris Administration has actively sought to include the voices of behind-the-scenes entertainment workers in decisions that impact our industries and workplaces.”
Following the vote, IATSE president Matthew Loeb said: “I am proud to confer this endorsement on behalf of the IATSE General Executive Board and once again stand with President Biden, in the way he has consistently stood with us. President Biden has given IATSE...

When Tim Burton was making "Batman" back in the late 1980s, he was approached by Warner Bros. about the possibility of including a few hot pop songs on the soundtrack. The studio's idea was to invite Prince to write several songs and to release a soundtrack record alongside an album of Danny Elfman's notable score. While Burton was a fan of Prince -- and who isn't? -- he didn't like the idea of including pop songs in "Batman." The studio, however, got their way, and songs like "Trust" and "Partyman" underscored several notable scenes in Burton's movie. Burton hated the result. He was once quoted as saying:
"It completely lost me. And it tainted something that I don't want to taint, which is how you feel about an artist. And actually, I liked his album. I wish I could listen to it without the feel of what had happened.

While it may not be the norm nowadays, marriage between family members was a common practice among the royals in the past. And it still happens to some extent even today. From King Charles III and Princess Diana to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, here’s a breakdown of some of the most famous related royal couples, along with some insight into why the British royal family continues to marry distant family members.

Centuries ago, the practice of marrying close relatives was widespread among the royal (and wealthy) families in Europe, as well as in other parts of the world. It was a way for reigning families to maintain power and protect their dynasties. The practice also helped well-to-do households preserve their wealth and property.

In a missive sent around to 2022’s Oscar nominees, stars were told to “read the room” when delivering speeches at the Academy Awards this month. Translation: Get off the stage before the orchestra is forced to awkwardly play you out.
In 1943, Greer Garson set a Guinness World Record for Longest Oscars Acceptance Speech, with her address upon accepting her Best Actress award forMrs Miniver clocking in at five and a half minutes.
Garson isn’t the only winner guilty of indulgence though. Hilary Swank, Adrien Brody and Al Pacino have all ignored the 45-second limit and consequently found themselves at the receiving end of a passive aggressive “Will you wrap this up?” stare.
Some actors, however, know that not every story needs to be so long and that brevity is an undervalued quality. Franklin D Roosevelt’s adage – “Be sincere, be brief, be seated” – could very well be the tagline for this year’s ceremony.

DC cinematic universe’s most loved Commissioner Gordon is hanging his boots and submitting his service gun.
Oscar winner Gary Oldman has indicated that he’s ready to bring the curtain down on an illustrious career that has seen him bag three Academy Award nominations and become one of the highest-grossing actors in history, reports Deadline.
The British star of Christopher Nolan’s ‘Batman’ trilogy and the long-running Harry Potter franchise is returning to TV in the second season of Apple TV+’s ‘Slow Horses’, and now the actor has said he’ll be happy to bow out whenever the show ends.
Oldman told the ‘Times of London’, “I’ve had an enviable career, but careers wane, and I do have other things that interest me outside of acting. When you’re young you think you’re going to get round to doing all of them – read that book – then the years go by.

"Annie" goes back a long way.
John Huston's 1982 musical film version of "Annie" was based on a Broadway show that debuted in Connecticut in 1976. That musical was, in turn, based on the popular newspaper comic strip "Little Orphan Annie" which made its own debut in 1924. Authored by Harold Gray from its start until his death in 1968, "Little Orphan Annie" was a cultural staple for many decades. After Gray's passing, other authors continued the strip's run until its final cancelation in 2010. Gray based "Little Orphan Annie" on a James Whitcomb Riley poem that was first published in 1885. The poem was originally called "The Elf Child," but was later changed to "Little Orphant Annie" (employing a Hoosier dialect on "orphant"). This is all to say, "Annie" has been part of the popular consciousness for over 137 years.

Every year there are new essays about unveiling the truth behind Orson Welles’s 1938 War of the Worlds broadcast that aired on CBS radio on October 30th, 1938. We know the truth – the stories about mass hysteria were overblown. For anyone looking for a straightforward history of what happened, look no farther than A. Brad Schwartz. The reason corrective stories keep coming up is that some people prefer to believe that the radio play sparked a nationwide mass panic. It sure makes for a great story. But while there were many confused listeners, some scared by the play’s deceptive production methods, there was not mass panic coast to coast. Finding the truth takes work, not unlike any fact-finding mission today, because we need to sift through a lot of salacious attention seeking information to find the facts. It’s the final stretch of his Senate race, and Tim Ryan is spending one of the campaign’s last Saturdays in Allen County, where Trump won by a mammoth 40 points two years ago. Most in his party believe the white working-class voters here have been permanently lost to the GOP. But Ryan made his way to this cavernous union hall in northwest Ohio because he hasn’t given up.
On stage, the 10-term congressman stood before a crowd of just a few dozen.

“A lot of this really happened” goes the title card for David O Russell’s starry, stylish, caper-ish Amsterdam. Emphasis on “a lot”. In its relentless, pinballing plot, there’s a fascist coup, an unsolved murder, an entire world war, shady figures aplenty, many cunning plans, and… a love story. It runs to just over two hours, but I felt like I’d been watching it for three days. Which, coincidentally, is the same duration as my most recent – and far less eventful – trip to actual Amsterdam.
This is Russell’s first film since the intriguing mob boss biopic Joy in 2015. In those seven years, he seems to have had a lot of ideas and put them all of them into one film. Largely set in New York in the 1930s,...

At face value, it sure seems like David O. Russell's new film "Amsterdam" must be swinging for the rhetorical fences. The film boasts an A-list cast, lead by three very bankable stars in Christian Bale, John David Washington, and Margot Robbie. It's lensed by repeat Oscar winner Emmanuel "Chivo" Lubezki, a true talent. Developing the narrative took years of work and collaboration. On paper, the movie has everything it needs to succeed and more, or at least it should.
The story itself is loosely based on a real-life 1933 conspiracy known as "The Business Plot," where a set of wealthy clandestine businessmen sought to overthrow President Franklin D. Roosevelt to install an unelected regime of fascist-aligned veterans. The conspirators sought to enlist retired Marine Corps Major General Smedley Butler, but he had other plans. The effort was thwarted. That narrative forms the loose background of this heavily fictionalized film, where...

Christian Bale, Margot Robbie and John David Washington bring laughs to a exhaustingly wacky riff on a real-life fascist conspiracy in 1930s New York
There’s usually a no more heart-sinking way of starting a movie than with the larky, slippery announcement: “Based on a true story – mostly!” or “What follows is all accurate – kinda!” It usually means the film will fall between the two stools marked “creatively interesting” and “factually informative”. However, David O Russell begins his elaborate screwball mystery Amsterdam by declaring: “A lot of this actually happened.” He means the film is a wacky riff on the little-known 1933 “White House putsch” in which a cabal of wealthy American businessmen conspired to overthrow President Franklin D Roosevelt, hoping to dupe a retired major general called Smedley Butler into leading their fascist veterans’ organisation. (Maybe the nearest British equivalent was Lord Mountbatten being approached in 1968 by a group of...
