Anthony and Joe Russo's 2018 superhero blockbuster "Avengers: Infinity War" was the 19th film in the long-running Marvel Cinematic Universe, and had an ending so beautifully bleak that it could have served as the proper ending to the entire series.
Since the start of the MCU in 2008, Earth had become suddenly and suspiciously lousy with superheroes; the android Vision (Paul Bettany) made note of this astonishing new change to Earth in 2016's "Captain America: Civil War." What happened to the universe that hundreds of superheroes suddenly came into being?
And, as we all know, wherever there are superheroes, there are planet-wide cataclysms. It's almost as if superheroes are largely responsible for creating the mayhem they so often fight. What a fitting end to a superhero story, then, that they should attract a destructive threat larger than they could handle. Thanos (Josh Brolin) was concerned with overpopulation and, approaching the problem with a warlord's mindset,...

There is a handful of Hollywood directors who gained recognition for their work on popular franchises, and Marvel Cinematic Universe is certainly one of those. Be honest; how many of you knew about the Russo brothers, James Gunn, Peyton Reed, or Jon Watts before they directed multiple MCU movies? However, when it comes to studio movies, people tend to forget that a producer is a person who’s pulling the strings, and directors are hired to do the job the way they are told.
A director is rarely allowed complete creative freedom in these franchises. Yes, there are some exceptions, like Sam Raimi’s work approach on ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ or Taika Waititi’s comedy style in the last two ‘Thor’ movies. Still, you will rarely find a director who is hired to do an MCU movie alone without any studio interference.
However, although the studio...

The San Sebastian International Film Festival has long been considered the most intimate of the A-list festivals, neatly wrapping up a hectic fall festival season as delegates descend on the enchanting seaside city in Northern Spain. But in the last few years, the event has cemented itself into a festival reputed for championing new talent and emerging voices across all sections of its programming.
Indeed, in the last four years, San Sebastian has awarded its top prize, the Golden Shell, to either directorial debut titles or second features, a sure sign that it takes its role as a promoter of rising talent seriously.
This year’s edition, which takes place September 22-30, is no different, with the official competition having 11 films from first or second-time directors including: Raven Jackson’s debut All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt, which premiered in Sundance; Isabel Herguera’s animation Sultana’s Dream; Noah Pritzker’s second feature Ex-Husbands,...

Netflix's track record with producing live-action anime is mixed, at best. The streamer's "One Piece" series has already been renewed, but the live-action "Cowboy Bebop" was a swiftly-canceled mess.
Their most infamous project, however, is probably "Death Note." This story, first told by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata in a mega-popular manga, focuses on the Japanese teenager Light Yagami. One day, a notebook falls from the sky into Light's lap. Dropped by a Shinigami (a Japanese death god) named Ryuk, the "death note" will kill anyone whose name is written on its pages. Light decides to purge the world of evil by using the Death Note to kill high-profile criminals, becoming a serial killer himself in the process. Dubbed "Kira" (a Japanese pronunciation of "Killer"), he gains allies (deludedly loyal pop idol Misa Amane) and adversaries (eccentric master detective L).
This 2017 film, directed by Adam Wingard, transposed this story to Seattle.

For a writer whose specialty was his mad rush of words — careening, excessive, gloriously offensive and thoroughly “gonzo,” to use a word he may well have coined — Hunter S. Thompson has long been an irresistible image to put on screen. He was played by Johnny Depp in “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” Bill Murray in “Where the Buffalo Roam” and a few others, and now it’s Willem Dafoe’s turn in Patricia Arquette’s directorial debut, “Gonzo Girl.”
Rather, it’s Dafoe’s turn to play somebody like Hunter S. Thompson. In the movie, which had its world premiere on Thursday night as one of the opening-night attractions of the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, Dafoe is “Walker Reade,” a wild-eyed journalist and author who lives in Woody Creek, Colorado and loves guns, drugs, alcohol and messing with people — not necessarily in that order. Actor James Caan almost got into a smackdown with director Sam Peckinpah during the making of The Killer Elite.
Peckinpah allowed for an explosion to be detonated near Caan’s face, which amped up the actor’s anger. “I said to Sam, ‘I’ll beat you like a redheaded stepchild,'” Caan told Bright Lights Film Journal in 2022.
“He was great, though, just insane,” he recalled. “As a matter of fact, when someone wrote a book about him, I was asked to give a quote for the cover. They had four quotes on the back. He called and said mine was the best. I had written, ‘Two more signatures and I’ll have him committed.'”
During the interview, Caan recalled how Peckinpah seemingly met his match on set. “He was like a great intimidator, but he found out really quick – I told him I would kick his f***ing ass.

Exclusive: Disgraced crypto entrepreneur Sam Bankman-Fried is to be profiled in a documentary feature for web3 streaming platform Myco.
Produced by Decrypt Studios, the as-yet-untitled doc will chart the rise and fall of the Ftx Founder once worth 24B who was arrested in The Bahamas earlier this week for “financial offences.”
Airing next year, the feature will include interview footage of Bankman-Fried as well as key Ftx executives and rival Binance Founder Changpeng Zhao, whose single tweet was the beginning of the end for Ftx and its sister company Almeda. The documentary will also chart the wider market impacts of the collapse of Ftx.
The scandal has already attracted the interest of the Russo Brothers, who are making an eight-part limited series on Ftx for Amazon with Hunters creator David Weil.
The doc “shows our ambition as a content business to back ambitious factual storytelling from top tier partners,” according to Myco Cco Phil McKenzie.

It's been known since 2016 that the third "Captain America" movie wasn't always going to be "Civil War." For one, Robert Downey Jr.'s involvement took some negotiation and you can't have "Civil War" without Iron Man. Second, the original plot was totally different.
As /Film reported at that time, the initial threequel premise centered around the "Madbomb." What is that, you might ask? In the Marvel Universe, it's a device that, through sonic waves, can drive whole crowds into frenzied violence. The device debuted in 1975; the eponymous "Madbomb" storyline ran in "Captain America" #193 to #200, written and drawn by original Cap co-creator Jack Kirby. Nate Moore, a producer on "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and "Civil War," aptly compared the Madbomb to the rage-inducing Sim cards in "Kingsman: The Secret Service."
"Cap 3: Madbomb" still would have featured the return of Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Baron Zemo (Daniel Bruhl) as the villain.

Anthony Mackie has come a long way since first suiting up as the Falcon in "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" back in 2014. In fact, his Sam Wilson is next in line to take up the mantle once held by Chris Evans' Steve Rogers in "Captain America: New World Order," which is set to hit theaters next year. There is currently a bit of uncertainty in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during a time when much of the old guard is making their exit and passing the torch to other characters.
Sam is one of the most well-established legacy heroes in the MCU, having appeared in multiple movies and even co-headlining his own Disney+ series, "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier." Fans love his take on the character and I think it's safe to say we're all looking forward to seeing him step into Captain America's boots in 2024. Interestingly, Falcon wasn't...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe changed when the Russo Brothers came in with Captain America: Winter Solider. Avengers: Infinity War featured a “mistake” that film fans once deemed Marvel’s “biggest” to date.
The blockbuster was released in 2018, and earned acclaim from critics and audiences.
Directed by the Russo brothers, the film follows the Avengers’s attempts to stop Thanos from collecting the six all-powerful Infinity Stones as part of his bid to destroy half of all life in the universe.
It seems, though, that the directors and writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, forgot a plot point that occured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s past.
The scene in question includes the characters Ebony Maw (Tom Vaughan-Lawlor) and Thanos (Josh Brolin).
After handing the Tesseract to Thanos, who already has the Power Stone, Maw says: "My humble personage bows before your grandeur.

From Batgirl to Suicide Squad to Star Wars, history shows that franchise movies should disown a director at their peril
Some tough language from the Russo brothers this week, who have accused Warner Brothers of “murder” over the recent canning of Batgirl. Speaking to Variety, the Avengers: Endgame directors did not mince their words.
“It’s rare that I can think of something that high profile, that expensive, that was murdered in such a way,” Joe Russo said of the studio’s decision to cancel Batgirl’s release in favour of a tax write-down. “It’s sad, but we’re at a time in the business where [this] is going to rear its head because people are scared.”...

The Quad, alongside Andrew “King Bach” Bachelor and his production shingle Bach Enterprises, has set July 10 as their official start date for their next project “Miles Ryder Part One,” the companies announced on Thursday.
The feature film “Miles Ryder Part One” is described as a “John Wick” meets “Nobody”-style action thriller and centers on Miles Ryder, an everyday man who is forced to confront his mysterious and violent past, which he has long kept secret. After a brutal attack threatens to expose him and his secrets, Ryder’s hidden combat talent and almost supernatural fighting abilities are put to the test as he attempts to save his family – and potentially the world – from a dark force with a nefarious motive.
“Mortal Kombat’s” Greg Russo wrote the screenplay and is continuing to work on the project with the team.

Disney has been cranking out the live-action adaptations of their animated classics for a number of years now, but they aren’t slowing down anytime soon. One of the many projects in development is the live-action Hercules movie set to be directed by Guy Ritchie. Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo are producing through their Agbo production banner, and they gave an update on the project while speaking with Variety.
One of the more common complaints directed towards Disney’s live-action adaptations is that they tend to stick too closely to their animated source material, but Joe Russo says that Hercules will be “a little bit more experimental in tone, a little bit more experimental in execution.” Russo added, “I think they’re excited to see what we can all bring to it in a way that isn’t just a reinterpretation of the animated film.” Guy Ritchie is...

The Russo Brothers (Joe and Anthony) are two of the most profitable directors in cinema history, with their massively successful contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe providing them the freedom to make whatever they want, however they want, no matter how much it costs. The duo were the feature of this week's cover story with Variety, and have confirmed that their future filmmaking focus is on their independent studio, Agbo, so it'll be a bit before they think about returning to the MCU. That said, the Russos are already making moves with Marvel's parent company, Disney, and are producing the highly-anticipated live-action adaptation of Disney's 1997 animated feature "Hercules."
The film will see the return of director Guy Ritchie following his 2019 live-action remake of "Aladdin," starring Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, and Will Smith. The recent wave of live-action remakes of beloved Disney animated classics has been mostly lackluster, with films like...

In this week’s cover story for Variety, filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo are clear that their dedication to their own independent studio, Agbo, means the directors of “Avengers: Endgame” don’t expect to make another movie with Marvel Studios any time soon.
“We won’t be ready to do anything with Marvel until the end of the decade,” Joe Russo says.
The Russos have, however, already returned to Marvel’s parent company, Disney. Through Agbo, they’re producing a live-action adaptation of Disney’s 1997 animated feature “Hercules,” with Guy Ritchie — who helmed the 2019 live-action remake of “Aladdin” — set to direct.
“We have an amazing relationship with them that we’ve built over a decade,” says Joe Russo. “I think we have a point of view on how they can stretch the limits of their IP moving forward, rather than playing IP management.”

It’s a clear, windy day on the Atlanta set of the sci-fi adventure “The Electric State,” Joe and Anthony Russo’s latest film for Netflix through their independent studio, Agbo. While the brothers direct Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt inside one of the soundstages, their youngest sister, Agbo’s newly promoted chief creative officer, Angela Russo-Otstot, is spreading some good news in the trailers parked outside about one of the company’s executives, senior vice president of physical production, Ari Costa.
“Ari’s a papa!” Russo-Otstot proclaims to Costa’s boss, Jake Aust, who works in the trailer next to hers. She shares all the fun new-baby details — name, time of birth — and she and Aust banter about the kid’s possible nicknames.

John McTiernan's flashy remake of "The Thomas Crown Affair" had a lot going against it when it first hit theaters in 1999. The original film featured two acting icons in Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway who completely embodied the roles of a billionaire playboy and a sexy art insurance agent in Norman Jewison's instant classic. The high fashion bar set in the first film would also be hard to top, thanks to costume designer Theadora Van Runkle's impeccable taste and McQueen's incredible transformation from bad boy to style icon. McQueen represented the pinnacle of Old Hollywood glamour bringing an American attitude and swagger to the character of Thomas Crown that rivaled the British self-assurance of James Bond. Really, it was the potential to update the style and fashion of the original that made remaking "The Thomas Crown Affair" actually make sense.

Dismissed by some critics upon its initial release in 1979, The Warriors has only grown in admiration over the years, and is now considered one of the most imitated studio films of all time.
The film is credited with accelerating the rise of hip-hop culture, with its dialogue sampled by the likes of Ice Cube and Wu-Tang Clan. Its plot has inspired video games like Street Fighter. Its look has influenced everything from Michael Jackson videos to the movies of Jordan Peele.
But its writer-director Walter Hill says it could have been even more progressive and forward-looking had he included a group of gay gang members in the final cut.

I know, I know. Once any popular franchise has been around long enough, it's inevitable that an increasingly vocal group of cynics will show up to complain that things just aren't like they used to be. I swear, I'm on your side here! Contrary to conventional trains of thought, change is both necessary and good. No longform narrative can survive by coasting on its initial success, stubbornly clinging to what worked in the past simply because, well, it's what worked in the past. But what if, along the way, the guarantee of success has caused those in charge to lose sight of something crucial and integral to their identity?

Family secrets and expectations are a burden.
On The Cleaning Lady Season 2 Episode 2, Thony's in-laws hurled accusations and expectations, which overwhelmed the entire family, especially Thony and Chris.
It's only a matter of time before the guilt-ridden and stressed-out teenager cracks.
From the minute Lolo and Lola, aka Jacinto and Alma, arrive, the atmosphere in the De La Rosa family changes. Usually, the sisters are laid back with Chris, Jaz, and Luca, but the grandparents are old-fashioned and strict.
Marco was their golden child, and Jacinto blamed Thony for getting the police involved. She should have known what the American police would do to a Filipino man.
If she hadn’t called the police, he would be alive! My son would be alive if not for you!

After a busy week at the United Nations General Assembly, actor, producer and philanthropist Priyanka Chopra Jonas, along with her director Anthony Russo, spoke passionately about her upcoming sci-fi espionage series, Citadel, for Amazon, at a panel discussion on Inside TV’s Best Big Bet at the recently-concluded Fast Company Innovation Festival, held in in New York City.
Dressed in a royal blue Yuzefi pant suit, the global icon explained what really drew her to this global action franchise that demanded months of her time and that led her to learn and speak six languages.
“You don’t have to watch the American show to understand; (the local language series) stands alone,” she said. “But if you watch all the other shows, they’re all connected – and that’s never been done in television. It’s such an interesting experiment, especially for a streamer like Amazon that caters to audiences across the world.

"Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" can't outrun the posse of remakes in Hollywood, where everything old is new again. The Oscar-winning 1969 Western, starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford, is in the National Film Registry, and the American Film Institute has recognized it as one of the 100 greatest American movies of all time. It's a bona fide classic, and at first glance, the idea of redoing it as a TV series seems as iffy as the scene in Robert Altman's industry satire "The Player," where a screenwriter pitches "The Graduate, Part II." But executive producers Joe and Anthony Russo, the duo who directed two of the top five highest-grossing films of all time ("Avengers: Endgame" and "Avengers: Infinity War"), are going to give it the old college try, anyway — and they're bringing Regé-Jean Page and Glen Powell along for the ride.
