Hundreds of pro filmmakers will join forces in New York City this summer to create six short films, as part of the fifth Women’s Weekend Film Challenge.
A grassroots initiative founded in 2017 by filmmakers Katrina Medoff and Tracy Sayre, Wwfc aims to address the lack of women and nonbinary people behind the camera and on screen through a variety of programs, including its signature film challenge, which places creatives on teams to write, shoot and edit a short in just one weekend. This year’s challenge set for August will be the first to take place in-person since the outbreak of the Covid pandemic.
Film creatives of all kinds can apply for the challenge for free at this link, between June 1 and June 27. Participation is also free of charge. Organizers are expecting to select around 200 participants from a pool of more than 1,000 applications, with the help of guest judges including cinematographers Nancy Schreiber,...

Mischa Webley had already been thinking about Chadwick Boseman.
Those social media reminders kept popping up this summer on Webley’s timeline to remind the filmmaker what he was doing exactly 10 years ago — making his directorial debut on the indie The Kill Hole. The memories stirred up a lot of love for the craft following a brief hiatus from filmmaking and caused him to stop and consider Boseman who was then a young actor Webley was convinced would go on to great things. And he did.

Who do actors interact with every day, whether they know it or not? If you guessed casting directors, you hit it on the head. Hard-working casting professionals need well-trained actors as much as well-trained actors need them; CDs undoubtedly know a lot about your job, but how much do you know about theirs? Backstage University is proud to launch a brand new casting director interview series, bridging the gap between CD and actor and helping the Backstage community find jobs, submit, and audition better than ever. Join us Tuesday, July 21 for a live interview and Q&A with CDs Maria Hubbard and Adrienne Stern, and learn what goes into each stage of the casting process—and how the professional actor can (and should) be an active collaborator. Hubbard is the casting coordinator for a major television network, and works on year-round programming including hit shows “Empire,” “Wayward Pines,” and “Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

The role of mentor is a time-honored one. An older, more experienced craftsman taking a younger, impressionable apprentice under his tutelage and guiding him along his path toward mastery of any given skill is a tradition that goes back to ancient times. The range of skills being taught can be wide and varied: blacksmithing, literature, business, the arts, philosophy, journeymen trades, martial arts… The list goes on and on.
From time to time, the unique skill set handed down is darker, more nefarious, than just a simple trade or artform. Sometimes… it can even be murder.
Writer/director Stevan Mena is no stranger to this concept. With his 2004 film Malevolence, he introduced a killer who’d been taught his skills by someone in his past, and audiences watched as he practiced his art against strangers unfortunate enough to wander into his hunting ground.

How do you use social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube?Marci LiroffMarci Liroff Casting, Los Angeles; 'Ghosts of Girlfriends Past,' 'Mean Girls,' 'St. Elmo's Fire,' 'A Christmas Story,' 'Blade Runner'; www.facebook.com/MarciLiroffFans, www.twitter.com/MarciliroffI feel like as a casting director, I'm becoming more accessible. Casting directors have been very inaccessible and kind of elusive and exclusive, and I don't think that flies anymore. I just want to be more involved. From my classes, I produced a DVD based on all my lessons, and I promote it on my Facebook fan page. I also edited the DVD into little digestible videos and put those up on YouTube, so people could spread them around. When I got on Facebook personally with my friends and family, I started getting hit on by lots of actors, people I didn't even know,...
