Audiences love a bit of history. Kings, Queens, dates, battles, all of that stuff. And a big part of the fun in watching a historical drama is knowing that you are watching a version of events that have actually happened. Yes, there might not be any material evidence that J. Robert Oppenheimer’s wife was imagining him having sex with his mistress during his private security hearing, but enough of the other details are right that we don’t know for certain she didn’t.
We like learning about the small personal dramas behind the big events, and seeing how people lived and loved and worked in an age before laptops and phones. Audiences want to connect with something real. And if those historical dramas don’t get all of the details exactly right, then that’s fine too! Some people get annoyed at Neil DeGrasse Tyson-style pedantry, but...

"She fights as though she's possessed." Disney+ has revealed an official trailer for an entertaining adventure comedy series called Renegade Nell, created by English TV creator Sally Wainwright, inspired by a true story. Of course. This cracking new series will be streaming on Disney+ worldwide starting at the end of March for everyone to enjoy. A quick-witted and courageous young woman framed for murder unexpectedly becomes the most notorious "highwayman" outlaw in 18th-century England. When a magical spirit called Billy appears, Nell realizes her destiny is bigger than she ever imagined. So – a bit of a superhero story, too? Renegade Nell (formerly The Ballad of Renegade Nell) is a British historical adventure series produced by The Lookout Point. Starring Louisa Harland as Nell Jackson, Joely Richardson, Adrian Lester, Nick Mohammed, Craig Parkinson, Florence Keen, Frank Dillane, Alice Kremelberg, Jake Dunn, and Pip Torrens as Lord Blancheford. This actually looks pretty cool!

I quite like a lager. And in this economy any lager will do. We've got an exclusive clip from the upcoming episode of the Apple TV+ comedy series, The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin, titled The Reddlehag. The Britcom has been rolling out on Apple TV+ weekly since the beginning of the month. Now, I really cannot tell from the makeup but Jessica Hynes is listed as playing the titular character in this episode, and, well, if anyone were a Reddlehag by description alone this would be what I envision as a Reddlehag. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on this one. Our own Peter has watched all six episodes and had this to say about the series in his...

‘The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin’ – Episode Guide (When Will the New Episodes Air?)
Get ready for a whacky and flashy ride with a bumbling Dick Turpin. Created by Claire Downes, Ian Jarvis, and Stuart Lane, The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin is a British historical comedy series that takes its inspiration from a real-life highwayman of the same name in the 18th century. The Apple TV+ series follows the story of Dick Turpin, who leaves everything behind to become the leader of a group of goofy highwaymen accidentally.
The comedy series isn’t a grounded story in any way, as it takes many leaps into the immensely absurd. So, if you are ready for this completely made-up adventure, then here is a map for the upcoming adventures.

Just to be clear, Apple TV+’s The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin is not a spinoff of Max’s Our Flag Means Death. The two shows do not share the same creative team, nor the same characters. No one involved with either has ever suggested they might in any way be related.
Nevertheless, a viewer might be forgiven for presuming that they could be. Both are cheerfully anachronistic comedies about 18th century Englishmen fleeing conventional society to turn outlaw. Both heroes raise eyebrows in their new milieu for their naivete, their sartorial flair and their distaste for violence. Both nevertheless win the loyalty of a quirky crew who find they quite like this softer version of their bloodthirsty trade.
But if Dick Turpin borrows much from Our Flag Means Death‘s vibe, it shares much less of its earnest substance. This one is silliness all the way down,...

"'Historically accurate' is subjective." Apple TV has unveiled a funny promo featurette for the wacky British comedy series The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin, launching streaming to watch on March 1st (this weekend!!). Noel Fielding stars Dick Turpin, the most dangerous highway robber of the 18th century. It's based on a true story. Sort of. This comedy series is a fictional take on the life of highway robber Dick Turpin – originally Richard Turpin, an English highwayman whose exploits were romanticised following his execution in York for horse theft. By the early 1730s, he had joined a gang of deer thieves and, later, became a poacher, burglar, horse thief and killer. This is his story. Though it's all made up, at least most of it is, and some of it isn't. Co-starring alongside Fielding in the ensemble cast: Ellie White, Marc Wootton, Duayne Boachie, Hugh Bonneville, Tamsin Greig, Asim Chaudhry,...

Noel Fielding Talks His New Apple TV+ Comedy Dick Turpin — and If Baking Show Fans Will Get the Joke
Millions of The Great British Baking Show’s fans might not know it, but Noel Fielding is very funny outside the tent, too.
Before taking over as co-host of Netflix’s supremely cozy UK baking competition in 2017, Fielding was best known for starring in The Mighty Boosh, a wildly surreal sitcom that became a cult hit during its 2004-07 run on BBC Three. Now two decades later, Fielding is returning to TV comedy with a new Apple TV+ series, The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin (premiering this Friday on the streamer), with Fielding playing an easygoing misfit who accidentally...

Exclusive: The Outlaws producer Big Talk Studios is developing its first TV thriller, a high-stakes series about a drug-smuggling submarine.
Big Talk boss Kenton Allen described Vulture as a cross between Below Deck and Narcos.
Penned by BAFTA-nominated Cyberbully writer David Lobatto, the series, which is being developed in association with ITV Studios, follows the crew on-board a ‘narco-sub’ on its way to deliver a $200 million payload of base cocaine to the Albanian mob. After a perilous journey across the Atlantic, the sub is ambushed by a rival cartel. Following a narrow escape with their cargo intact, but with a severely damaged submarine, the crew find themselves marooned in the middle of the Adriatic Sea.
Allen, who is EPing alongside Luke Alkin, called Vulture a “highly dynamic, action-packed series that we know will cut through in this very crowded market and thrill audiences around the world with this ultimate culture-clash high stakes drama.
Big Talk boss Kenton Allen described Vulture as a cross between Below Deck and Narcos.

Of all the films screening at the Galway Film Fleadh on the West Coast of Ireland, one stands out as having the sort of wild premise that should instantly pique the interest of anyone with a penchant for comedy of the more ridiculous variety.
Apocalypse Clown — getting its world premiere on Friday before screening at Canada’s Fantastia Festival later this month and ahead of its U.K. and Ireland release on Sept. 1 — may even boast the most “Wtf?” film plotline of the year, with a story set in the aftermath of a mysterious blackout that plunges Ireland into anarchy and following a group of washed-up clowns, brought together following a mass brawl at a funeral, who traverse the country in chaotic and sometimes bloody fashion for one last shot at their (far-fetched) dreams. A quiet arthouse drama, this is not.

In what is likely to be considered a major poach, Sony Pictures Television has hired Mathew Justice — a seasoned U.K. industry vet and currently managing director of the ITV Studios-owned Big Talk — for the newly created role of executive vp, head of U.K. and Europe.
Reporting to Spt president of international productions Wayne Garvie, Justice will directly manage the company’s International Studio operations and European co-productions business, as well as work closely with Spt International Production’s wholly owned and joint venture production companies in the region, which include Bad Wolf (His Dark Materials, Industry), Eleven Films (Sex Education) and Left Bank Pictures (The Crown). He joins later this year.
“Joining Wayne and the team at Spt is an opportunity that dreams are made of,” said Justice. “The Spt labels are outstanding, so it is a rare honor to get to work with them and the people behind them.

Leicester-based filmmaker Steve Lawson seems to have struck up quite the partnership with UK distributor High Fliers Films, having had the last half a dozen or so films he’s made released on DVD here in Blighty – distribution that has seen his films hit supermarket shelves across the country. That’s probably because Lawson has recently focused on making genre films based on familiar tropes – Dracula, Jack the Ripper, Jekyll and Hyde; hell Lawson has even tackled the likes of the Musketeers and Dick Turpin!
With The Mummy: Resurrection Lawson tells his version of the all-too-common undead horror icon, turned cliche. And by his version, I mean a film made on the cheap and on as little a number of...

Noel Fielding will star as legendary British Highwayman Dick Turpin in a currently untitled series from Apple TV Plus.
The comedy-adventure show follows Fielding as the most famous, but least likely of highway robbers whose success is defined mostly by his charm, showmanship and great hair. Together with his gang of loveable rogues, Dick rides the highs and lows of celebrity — and does what he can to escape the clutches of the Thief Taker General.
Producing for Apple TV+ is Big Talk Productions, owned by ITV Studios.
Ben Palmer (The Inbetweeners Movie) is directing. Claire Downes, Stuart Lane, Ian Jarvis (The Outlaws) wrote and created the show, with Noel Fielding and Jeremy Dyson (League Of Gentleman) as script consultants.
Executive Producers are Kenton Allen, Noel Fielding, Victoria Grew, Matthew Justice and Ben Palmer. Top of this post and below are first-look images.

Stars: Mollie Hindle, Morgan Rees-Davies, Tom Hendryck, Ciaron Davies, Stacey Gough, Melvyn Rawlinson, Steve Dolton | Written and Directed by Steve Lawson
After a disastrous attempt to rob the carriage of the Earl of Pembroke, famed highwayman Dick Turpin finds himself on the run in the English countryside with the only thing of value he was able to steal – the Earl’s feisty daughter, Elizabeth.
Steve Lawson mines familiar territory once again with The Highwayman: The Legend of Dick Turpin… Yes, after bringing us films about Van Helsing, Jack the Ripper, Jekyll & Hyde and most recently the Musketeers, Lawson picks up the tale of the legendary roguish highwayman. A character who, once upon a time, was a focus of a myriad of films and TV shows yet nowadays seems to have been left on by the wayside (pun intended).
