It's hard to be believe it's only Cedric Nicolas-Troyan's third film and his second feature (his first was The Huntsman: Winter's War). His first film was the zany short Carrot vs. Ninja.
The short is billed as "a quick tale of violence" and you can watch it below.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead has cemented her status as a top-tier action star thanks to her most physically demanding role yet in Cedric Nicolas-Troyan’s neon-soaked actioner, Kate. Set in Tokyo, Winstead plays the eponymous Kate, a poisoned assassin who only has 24 hours to find the man responsible for her impending death. Despite having a few months off to recover from another taxing role as Huntress in Cathy Yan’s Birds of Prey, Winstead knew that Kate was going to push her to the limit, which prompted her to make an understandable request.

Netflix's "Kate" doesn't hide its influences -- it wears them loudly and proudly. For director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, those references aren't the films the trailer suggests. It's certainly no "Crank" or an excellent old-school noir, "D.O.A.," but was inspired by the anime Nicolas-Troyan consumed as a kid in France, long before his days as a soldier and visual effects supervisor.
Nicolas-Troyan worked on "One Hour Photo," "The Ring," and "The Weatherman" before he finally took a seat in the director's chair. His feature debut was "The Huntsman: Winter's War," but "Kate" is perhaps closer to his personal taste and style. It's a hitman...

“You’re a Terminator,” Tokyo teen Ani (Miku Patricia Martineau) gapes to Kate (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) after witnessing the bloodshed her kidnapper has brought down on two dozen yakuza now lying shot, stabbed, sizzled on a yakitori grill and very, very dead. Kate, the titular antihero of director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan’s vicious vengeance flick, is a grown-up child assassin trained by her mentor (Woody Harrelson) in the art of death, a fate so common among on-screen orphans that their support group could fill a church basement. Yes, she can rack up quite the Schwarzenegger-esque kill count. But Kate’s Terminator resemblance also includes her left eye’s red and distended pupil, evidence of the polonium poisoning that will kill her in 24 hours. Other symptoms of this gimmick include blistered skin, pounding eardrums, wobbly knees and an urgency to take an entire gangster clan along with her to the grave. There is no cure.

This year, Netflix grabbed a whopping 35 Oscar nominations for its slate of original movies, including 10 nominations for David Fincher’s “Mank,” six nominations for Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” and five nominations for the August Wilson adaptation “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” which featured the final performance from star and Best Actor nominee Chadwick Boseman. The total number of nominations for the streaming service ranked among the most ever by a single studio and dwarfed the Netflix tally in 2020 when the platform grabbed 24 nominations to lead all distributors.
But judging merely by quantity, 2021 could become the biggest year yet for Netflix. Over the final four months of the year, the studio will debut more than 40 titles, including new movies from past Oscar favorites like Adam McKay, Jane Campion, and Paolo Sorrentino as well as buzzy features from first-time filmmakers such as Lin-Manuel Miranda and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Netflix has debuted a new trailer for the upcoming action thriller feature ‘Kate.’
Meticulous and preternaturally skilled, Kate is the perfect specimen of a finely tuned assassin at the height of her game. But when she uncharacteristically blows an assignment targeting a member of the yakuza in Tokyo, she quickly discovers she’s been poisoned, a brutally slow execution that gives her less than 24 hours to exact revenge on her killers. As her body swiftly deteriorates, Kate forms an unlikely bond with the teenage daughter of one of her past victims.
Directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, the film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Woody Harrelson
Also in trailers – Tom Hardy stars in new trailer for ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’

Mary Elizabeth Winstead is the latest star to go all John Wick on everyone in the room for her new film “Kate,” and even her partner in crime can see she’s a “total killer babe.”
Winstead in “Kate” plays an assassin in Tokyo on what is to be her last job to take down the Yakuza kingpin. She finds that she’s been poisoned and now has less than 24 hours to live. In that time she locates a young Japanese girl who can help her track down her mark and figure out who set her up to die.
“Kate, you’re like that person in a nightmare, take no s— from no dudes, you’re scary,” the girl played by newcomer Miku Martineau says in the trailer. She even at one point threatens some mobsters by saying that even with 20 of them, they’re all about to die, and “you’re outnumbered.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead has already showed that she’s more than capable of leading an action movie, thanks to her supporting role as Huntress in the DC Comics tentpole “Birds of Prey,” and now she’s getting the star vehicle she deserves with Netflix’s ticking-clock assassin thriller “Kate.” Winstead stars in the eponymous role opposite Woody Harrelson. The movie was helmed by French director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, perhaps best known to U.S. audiences for directing the “Snow White and the Hunstman” sequel “The Huntsman: Winter’s War.”
The official synopsis for “Kate” from Netflix reads: “Meticulous and preternaturally skilled, Kate is the perfect specimen of a finely tuned assassin at the height of her game. "Kate, you're like that person in that nightmare - take no sh*t from no dudes." Netflix has unveiled the first official trailer for a new action movie called Kate, the latest feature made by the VFX supervisor-turned-director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, who last directed the sequel The Huntsman: Winter's War. There’s no time for mercy. After she's poisoned, a ruthless criminal operative has less than 24 hours to exact revenge on her enemies and in the process forms an unexpected bond with the daughter of one of her past victims. This seems like a killer action concept mashing up Kill Bill and Jolt with Gunpowder Milkshake, but with Mary Elizabeth Winstead starring as the action badass Kate in this one. In addition to Mew, the impressive full cast also includes Tadanobu Asano, Miyavi, Michiel Huisman, plus Jun Kunimura and Woody Harrelson, and introducing Miku Martineau. The best thing about this is that it's set in Japan.

John Wick certainly seems to be one hell of a launchpad for its directorial talent. On the heels of the much-praised action flick, co-directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski parted ways. Stahelski stayed on board for the second entry in the John Wick saga, John Wick: Chapter 2, and just recently David Leitch was confirmed to be helming the Deadpool 2. However, thanks to a new report from THR, we now know that Stahelski already has his next film lined up.
According to the outlet, Stahelski has signed on to the Highlander reboot, a film that’s been in the works for some time now. Regarding the new gig, Stahelski had the following to say:
"I've been a huge fan of the original property since I saw it in high school. Such great themes of immortality, love, and identity are all wrapped up in such colorful mythology.

The 1986 fantasy film “Highlander” is getting the Hollywood reboot treatment with “John Wick’s” Chad Stahelski set to direct for Lionsgate.
The remake has been in the works since 2008 and previously had Justin Lin, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Cedric Nicolas-Troyan attached to direct, with Stahelski now officially taking the lead.
“I’ve been a huge fan of the original property since I saw it in high school,” Stahelski told The Hollywood Reporter, who reported the news first. “Such great themes of immortality, love, and identity are all wrapped up in such colorful mythology. I can’t think of a better property that gives the opportunity to create interesting characters, mythic themes and action set pieces.”
The film will be produced by Neal H. Moritz and Peter Davis. The studio is currently looking for a writer to pen the script.

Since 2008, many directors have been attached to a Highlander reboot such as Justin Lin, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Cedric Nicolas-Troyan. Lionsgate has now tapped John Wick director Chad Stahelski to helm the long digesting project.
Stahelski to THR on Highlander:

I can't think of a better property that gives the opportunity to create interesting characters, mythic themes and action set pieces."
John Wick has its own self-contained mythology that felt real and rich. I'm excited to see Stahelski bring that kind of myth-making and polish to Highlander. There is no doubt that Stahelski will be able to make the action choreography amazing, let's hope they pair him with a smart writer like Christopher McQuarrie or Lionsgate alums Simon Beaufoy,...

Lionsgate has been trying to get a Highlander remake/reboot off the ground since 2008, but today brings news that hopefully means it's actually going to happen in the near future; they've hired the John Wick 2 director to helm it.
As a long time fan of the Highlander franchise, I've been waiting a long time to see something new from the series. It's a premise ripe with potential (though many of the sequels failed to capitalize on them), and given the technology/choreography of today could be filled with some awesome action.
The road to seeing a remake/reboot happen, however, has been long and winding. Summit/Lionsgate have been trying to make it a reality for eight years now and despite having gone through three directors already (Justin Lin, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Cedric Nicolas-Troyan), think they've found the right person with John Wick's Chad Stahelski.

The Hollywood Reporter is telling us today that John Wick co-director Chad Stahelski has been brought on to helm the upcoming Highlander reboot. This news arrives just days after the other co-director of John Wick, David Leitch, landed the Deadpool 2 directing gig, proving that the Keanu Reeves-led actioner gave both men a significant boost as far as their careers go.

Fairy Tales are also cautionary tales, a way to teach morals and values to children at a time when the majority of the populace couldn’t read or write. It wasn’t until the last four centuries or so when we began writing it all down and solidifying the variations. Even today, people take the classics and reinterpret them for new generations, bringing in modern themes and issues, making them more relevant.
The cautionary tale to take from The Huntsman: Winter’s War is that you have to have something interesting to say. The preceding film, Snow White and the Huntsman, gave us a revisionist Snow White in the form of plucky Kristen Stewart, a modern day action heroine that made her a proactive player in the classic German tale.

The Huntsman: Winter’s War stars Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road, Monster) as the evil Queen Ravenna, who betrays her good sister Freya (Emily Blunt: Sicario, Edge of Tomorrow) with an unforgivable act, freezing Freya’s heart to love and unleashing in her an icy power she never knew she possessed. Retreating to a kingdom far to the north, Freya raises an army of Huntsmen as her protectors, with the only rule that no two of them should ever fall in love. As a war for domination escalates between the two queens, the hero standing between good and evil is Freya’s most elite Huntsman, Eric (Chris Hemsworth: Thor, Star Trek Into Darkness). Alongside fellow warrior Sara (Jessica Chastain: The Martian, The Help) — the only woman who has ever captured his heart — Eric must help Freya vanquish her sister or Ravenna’s wickedness will rule for eternity.
The film will also be available on 4K Ultra HD™ in a combo pack which includes 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray™ and Digital HD with UltraViolet. The 4K Ultra Hdtm will include all bonus features on the Blu-ray disc.
