Narvik (Kampen om Narvik – Hitlers første nederlag) is a Norwegian film directed by Erik Skjoldbjaerg starring Kristine Hartgen, Carl Martin Eggesbø and Henrik Mestad.
This is a movie that despite its good work technically, does not manage to be a “great movie” which is very likely what was expected of a production like this one.
A good movie, but not memorable.
Storyline Narvik
Norway, a supposedly neutral country during World War II, was a target for the Germans and British because of the minerals and raw goods that left from the small town in the north of Norway for both war contingents. Obviously, the equilibrium was broken and Norwegians had to take part in a battle that lasted two months.
This was the first time in which Hitler´s army was defeated in the war.
And, technically speaking: the movie is pretty good tecnically. Norway has managed to re-invent itself and,...

This is a Pure Movies review of Carlos, directed by Olivier Assayas, starring Édgar Ramírez, Alexander Scheer, Alejandro Arroyo, Ahmad Kaabour, Talal El-Jordi, Juana Acosta, Nora von Waldstätten, Christoph Bach, Rodney El Haddad and Julia Hummer. Written by David Hudson. A joint French-German production, co-written and directed by Olivier Assayas, Carlos was originally made as a three-part, five hour TV mini-series. It’s now been edited down to 165 minutes for worldwide cinematic release. It tells the story of Carlos the Jackal; one of the world’s most notorious terrorists, whose heyday ran from the mid-70s up until the end of the cold war. Born Ilich Ramírez Sánchez in Venezeula in 1949, Carlos was a committed and cold revolutionary who likened himself to Che Guevera, but who’s own personal war against capitalism and imperialism took in a more random and international selection of victims.

Olivier Assayas' epic but intimate treatment of terrorism and geopolitics, Carlos, has been garnering a well-deserved amount of exegesis since its debut at the Cannes Film Festival in May. (See the roundups from our own David Hudson here and here.) There's a lot to discuss, from the issues addressed by the film to the bravura performances by a cast led by the spectacular Edgar Ramírez in the title role. While there are more than a few artists who are either uncomfortable with or inept at discussing their work, Assayas, once a film critic himself, is not one of them. So when I sat down with him to talk Carlos and Carlos, I knew he'd have plenty to say, and now I think, for the purposes of this piece, I should just let him say it. So I'm putting up this interview with very little in the way of introduction...

Cologne, Germany -- A slimmed down, mainstream-friendly version of the German TV awards aired Sunday night to public protests from the local industry but the best ratings in years.
Nearly four million viewers tuned in to watch the awards, Germany's equivalent of the Emmys, on pubweb Ard. That's nearly triple last year's audience.
The show's organizers -- Germany's main channels Ard, Zdf, Rtl, Pro7 and Sat.1 -- made radical changes to this year's awards to broaden their appeal. They dumped award categories en masse -- supporting actors, editors, screenwriters and camera folk went home empty handed this year -- in order to create a fast-moving, all-highlights show.
Germany's behind-the-camera talent protested, as did Germany's actors union, but the viewers' vote was trump.
Protests aside, few could argue with this year's decisions. Ard's mafia drama "Face to Face with Crime" won for best mini-series as well for its 'extraordinary contribution' to fiction.

The first poster for Olivier Assayas‘ epic biopic Carlos, which will premiere in its full five-and-a-half-hour cut at Cannes Fest, about famed terrorist Carlos The Jackal has finally landed and we must admit that it really looks great. Take a look also at several Hi-Res photos from the movie below.
Edgar Ramirez as Carlos
As we already wrote this is a three-part TV drama and that’s the reason why this movie isn’t In Competition, but we’re sure that this story about Venezuelan revolutionary, Ilich Ramirez Sanchez is more than interesting.
If you are lucky to be at Cannes right now, you can watch the premiere on Wednesday (May 19) at 12 Am, local time.
Based on an original idea by Daniel Leconte, written by Olivier Assayas and Dan Franck, directed by Assayas, Carlos tells the story of Ilich Ramírez Sánchez who, for two decades, was one of the most wanted terrorists on the planet.
