As of this writing, it has been over two days since Future and Metro Boomin dropped their first full-length collaboration, We Don’t Trust You, and it has almost been completely overshadowed by a Kendrick Lamar cameo. The track on which he appears, “Like That,” prominently features Rodney O and Joe Cooley’s 1987 single “Everlasting Bass,” and Metro uses it like Three 6 Mafia did throughout their discography, from “Where Da Bud At” to “Who the Crunkest.” Thanks in part to the Mafia, “Everlasting Bass” has become an avatar of Jheri-curled hardness,...

Soulful jazz great Les McCann, whose work was sampled by hundreds of hip-hop artists including Notorious B.I.G. and Dr. Dre, died Friday in the Los Angeles area. He was 88.
The musician, who released more than 60 albums over the course of his career, had been admitted to a hospital from the nursing care facility he’d lived in for the past four years and was diagnosed with pneumonia, his manager Alan Abrahams told The Hollywood Reporter.
In a prolific career, he was arguably best known for his 1969 Montreaux Jazz Festival performance of the protest song “Compared to What.”
McCann joined forces with saxophonist Eddie Harris and trumpeter Benny Bailey. The three hadn’t played together before, and there wasn’t time for rehearsal, according to The New York Times.
The outlet cites the liner notes for a reissue of the concert album, the Grammy-nominated Swiss Movement, in which McCann writes: “Just before we went onstage,...

Blitz Bazawule could care less about The Color Purple’s recent award nominations. The film’s director isn’t worried about the movie-musical’s Best Picture snub at the Golden Globe or wowed by the musical’s five Critics Choice nominations and three mentions on the Oscars’ shortlist for its music. He understands the significance of such accolades, but says he prefers to focus on how viewers will receive the Broadway musical adaptation.
“I honestly do not pay attention to any of it,” Bazawule tells Rolling Stone, the day the Critics Choice nominations were announced.

Lil Yachty and Tierra Whack are two of the more inventive artists in hip-hop today — two wildly original talents who have charted their own paths without following anyone else’s trends. If you’re going to compare them to anyone, though, it might as well be each other. Both started their careers in places with rich musical histories: Yachty began rapping as a teen in the hitmaking playground of Atlanta, while Tierra sharpened her pen and earned a spot in the history of slick MCs who call Philadelphia home. Both found success suddenly,...

New York hardcore vets Sick of It All have filed a lawsuit against hip-hop duo Mobb Deep and clothing brand Surpreme for copyright infringement stemming from the use of the band’s dragon logo.
The suit was filed by Bush Baby Zamagate, Inc. — the company that owns Sick of It All’s intellectual property — which claims that Mobb Deep and Supreme used a logo nearly identical to the hardcore band’s long-standing dragon emblem, which has origins dating back to 1987.
“Defendants’ adoption and use of their knockoff logo … is not just reckless and inexplicable — it is willful infringement and unfair competition,” the lawsuit stated (per HipHopDX).
Furthermore, the lawsuit claims that in “June 2023, Supreme, a clothing and skateboarding lifestyle brand, as part of a collaboration with Mobb Deep, began using its logo on clothing goods, including t-shirts and hats. The similarities between the two marks, particularly when used on clothing,...

The 51-year-old entertainer had success in the ‘90s with music, including the platinum-selling album Shaq Diesel, released in 1993. It featured the gold-selling singles “What’s Up Doc? It’s no secret that during 2020, many networks and streaming services leaned hard into nostalgia. Everyone was watching old feel-good movies and TV show reruns; famous casts were getting back together over Zoom for reunion specials that made people feel warm and fuzzy when the world was anything but. However, it’s a method that MTV’s “The Challenge,” produced by Bunim/Murray Prods., has been using for decades.
The whole premise of the reality competition series, which debuted in 1998, is about bringing back stars from past shows. Originally former “The Real World” and “Road Rules” cast members competed for a cash prize, but that has now expanded to include alumni from “Are You the One?,” “Big Brother,” “Survivor” and many more. In fact, over the 37 seasons, 27 outside franchises from around the globe have been incorporated.
