Praise the Mortis Gods! "The Acolyte" is giving us a reason to get excited about live-action "Star Wars" television again while we patiently await the second season of "Andor." After "The Mandalorian" season 3 saw its namesake frustratingly sidelined in favor of setting up Dave Filoni's larger New Republic arc and "Ahsoka" season 1 left me and others feeling like the convergence of live-action and animated "Star Wars" is a real mixed blessing, "Russian Doll" co-creator Leslye Headland is here to change things up. "The Acolyte" is set in the High Republic era, a period that's been explored in the ongoing High Republic publishing initiative but has never before been realized in live-action. That alone should be enough to pique the interest of anyone who's ready for a "Star Wars" series that's less beholden to setting up future shows and can exist more independently.
That's not to say "The Acolyte" will...

There will be spoilers for "Star Wars - The High Republic: Defy the Storm" by Tessa Gratton and Justina Ireland.
"Star Wars: The High Republic" continues its march through its third phase with the release of "Star Wars: Defy the Storm," which was co-written by Tessa Gratton and Justina Ireland. It builds off the events of "Star Wars - The High Republic: The Eye of Darkness" and shows us a galaxy in disarray thanks to the evil Nihil and their Stormwall. For those who haven't been keeping up with the High Republic era, these books are set more than a hundred years before the events of "The Phantom Menace" and are a look at the Jedi at their true height, just as they begin their descent that will ultimately lead to their destruction. They face an enemy called the Nihil, brutal pirates who will stop at nothing to take what they want.

Spoilers for "Star Wars: Path of Deceit" follow.
"The High Republic" is an exciting new era in the "Star Wars" universe, housed primarily in off-screen adventures: books, comics, and audio dramas. That will change eventually with "Star Wars: The Acolyte," the new Disney+ TV series from Leslye Headland, but in the meantime, the books are where the action is. "Path of Deceit," co-written by Tessa Gratton and Justina Ireland, is the newest installment of the publishing program and kicks off a whole new look at the era. In the first wave of stories, starting with Charles Soule's "Light of the Jedi" and ending with a cliffhanger in "The Fallen Star" by Claudia Gray, gives us a window into what makes the Jedi afraid. "Path of Deceit" is the first book in the second phase of "The High Republic" turning the clock back another hundred-plus years in the "Star Wars" galaxy.
