Several Broadway shows impacted by the uptick in New York City Covid cases last week were still feeling the effects this week: Plaza Suite has announced that it will resume performances tomorrow with Matthew Broderick back but co-star Sarah Jessica Parker still out, and Paradise Square has canceled performances for the entire week.
Producers of Plaza Suite said today that performances of the hit comedy will resume Thursday, April 14, at the Hudson Theatre with Broderick performing opposite Erin Dilly playing the roles usually portrayed by Broderick’s co-star and wife Parker.
Parker is expected to return to the production starting with the matinee on Saturday, April 16.
Last week, Plaza Suite canceled performances after both Broderick and Parker tested positive for Covid. Broderick had already been out for two days – replaced by an understudy – when Parker announced on April 7 that she too had tested positive.

Danny Rutigliano has been kicking around New York theater circles for years. (His last Broadway credit: the bellhop in the 2011 revival Born Yesterday.) But the fire-hydrant-sized actor finally gets his moment in the center-stage spotlight in the new revival of composer Sheldon Harnick and lyricist Jerry Bock’s 1959 biomusical Fiorello!, running through this Sunday at New York City Center as part of the Encores! series. Rutigliano makes the most of the opportunity, bringing an infectious energy (and some surprisingly light-footed dance moves) to the role of Fiorello Laguardia, the five-foot-tall New York city pol who challenged the corrupt Tammany Hall...

We had a great Thanksgiving Day. In the morning, we watched the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. How could we be in NYC and not go to the parade Then we had Thanksgiving dinner with Erin Dilly, who plays my mother in the show, and her family at their home. It was a wonderful time. We had to have an early dinner though, because we had a performance that evening. It went well, the audience was great, a good ending to a great Thanksgiving Day The weekend after Thanksgiving, my grandmother, aunt, and cousins visited us from North Carolina. They saw our show - A Christmas Story, the Musical - twice and all loved it, from my grandmother who is 85 down to my youngest cousin who is 5. We also saw the Rockettes while they were here and had a backstage tour after the show, including visiting the camels who were a...

A number of casting and production notices have come up lately and unexpectedly caught my attention. It seems to me, for starters, that a number of these celebrities are coming to Broadway for no other reason than to get themselves a Tony.
First up came the announcement that Renee Zellweger will star in a Broadway-bound adaptation of the 1961 film The Hustler. Though it has not been announced what role Ms. Zellweger will play, the choice to cast her is hard for me to wrap my brain around. To me, what that made the film so memorable were the performances of Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason. They were so strong that I don’t even remember there being a woman in the film other than in the background.
Would Zellweger take on Newman or Gleason’s role? I vaguely remember Piper Laurie playing a bit part in the film,...

Sutton Foster is once again the toast of Broadway after receiving rave reviews last week for headlining the second rialto revival of Cole Porter's "Anything Goes." Taking on a role previously played by Broadway belters Ethel Merman and Patti LuPone, Foster wowed the critics as the tough-talking Reno Sweeney. Ben Brantley of the New York Times said that Foster was, "both goofy and sexy, shruggingly insouciant and rigorously polished, Ms. Foster’s performance embodies the essence of escapist entertainment in the 1930s." And Variety's Steven Suskin proclaimed: "She doesn't just deliver those Cole Porter hits, she knocks 'em out of the park." Foster's rise to the top reads like something out of an old MGM musical. Ten years ago, during the out-of-town tryout for "Thoroughly Modern Millie" in San Diego, she was plucked from the chorus to replace Erin Dilly in the title role. Pinning the hopes of a $10 million productio.
