Exclusive: Walking Dead maker Skybound Entertainment has struck what it is calling a “first-of-its-kind” deal with Prime Video over a dystopian thriller series from Scandinavia.
Amazon has taken rights in the Nordics for Vaka but Skybound retains worldwide distribution and controls the show’s “global commissioning structure.” This means Skybound can strike deals with buyers and sellers in different territories while the door remains open for Prime Video to acquire Vaka for other regions further down the line.
Set in Stockholm and starring Aliette Opheim and Jonas Karlsson, Vaka follows the spread of a deadly insomnia epidemic. A disgraced minister must balance addressing the crisis and caring for his son, while an ambulance nurse goes to great lengths to save her lover.
The show is co-produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Unlimited Stories and Sagafilm, the latter of which was acquired by Skybound and 5th Planet Games last year. The Icelandic...

It’s been nine months since the Season 2 launch of series Patriot starring Michael Dorman.
At TCA today, Albert Cheng, Amazon Studios’ co-head of TV, indicated that we may have seen the last of the hour-long comedy, which was developed and ordered by the previous regime.

“At this time we don’t have a plan for a new season,” he said during the streaming network’s executive session Saturday. “We are not planning a new season.”
After barely surviving his Midwestern corporate cover in Season 1, U.S. intelligence officer John Tavner (Dorman) found himself without his bag of 11 million euros and no closer to the goal of influencing Iran’s presidential election. As a result, John’s father (Terry O’Quinn) ordered more extreme measures in Season 2: the assassination of the pro-nuclear candidate in a heavily guarded Paris compound. John is the linchpin of a high-stakes covert operation with profound global ramifications.

Make no mistake about it: “Patriot” is the story of an abusive relationship. With its bleak haze and black vignettes,Season 2 makes the physical and psychological damage inflicted on John Taynor (Michael Dornan) easier to recognize. Seeing the show for what it is doesn’t make it easier to process; creator, writer, and director Steve Conrad’s yarn about loyalty is easygoing and unrelenting, charming in its eccentricities, and stark in its depiction of espionage. There are no fancy gadgets or sexy double agents in the second season of Amazon’s drama; just a father, a son, and their loyalty to an idea bigger than themselves.
Season 2 is shorter (both in episode count and length), darker, and lacking in much of the whimsy that kept Season 1 afloat, but it’s an intriguing narrative with unique payoffs. For an existential drama about America’s decaying moral compass, “Patriot” is pretty funny.

As a result, John’s father (Terry O’Quinn), orders more extreme measures in Season 2: the assassination of the pro-nuclear candidate in a heavily-guarded Paris compound. John is the linchpin of a high-stakes covert operation with profound global ramifications. And he’s bringing his mom (Debra Winger) with him. Michael Chernus, Aliette Opheim, Kurtwood Smith and Kathleen Munroe also star.

While music plays an integral part in most TV shows, the way “Patriot” is built around its original music is as unique as the show itself.
Tracking a N.O.C. — non-official cover — agent who would rather get high and play guitar than save the world, “Patriot” features a number of surprising, insightful songs payed by John Tavner as a way to cope with the stress of his job and the past stress inflicted upon him. While sometimes a little too revealing for his boss’ comfort, the music is moving, charming, and helps define a show as unconventional as it is engaging.
For more on the music and how it was made, watch the exclusive making-of clip below. The video contains behind-the-scenes footage of the recordings, how the music helped bring the characters to life, and how it served as the true inspiration and specific foundation of the show.
